  • What was the original Legend of Zelda like for someone who grew up alongside it but completely missed it? In this interview, I ask Games With Tea a series of Zelda-related questions to gain a deeper understanding into what that experience was like as well as what he thinks of it today.

My mom bought the nes the year after she graduated high school in 87 while pregnant with my older sister. At around 95 me and my brother dug it up rummaging thru her closet. She had around 15 games two of which were super mario bros 1 and zelda. I was about 4. She soon after she took us to funkoland to pick out two games each. I choose zelda 2 and gremlins 2 and my brother picked out ikari warriors and superman. Ill never forget how I was amazed I could control something on the tv. Before then I never knew video games were a thing. She soon after bought us a super Nintendo with around 30 games from a garage sale for about 50 bucks. And there were some of the big name common titles. Later the next year my mom surprised my brother for his bday with the ps1 and n64. Our mom was a gamer herself. We have been playing thru zelda 1 recently and im so glad we get to share that with eaxh other. Shes a great mom.

Agreed! It’s interesting to hear what it’s like after the fact, especially if you were originally around for it.

I get what Tea is saying with the recent games almost feeling like spin-offs, but for me, it’s backwards. I know that this is just a feeling and not objectively true, but console games - primarily the 3D games - feel like the mainline series. The Oracle titles, Link’s Awakening, etc. share the adventurous spirit, the puzzle-solving, and much of the equipment in the rest of the series, but they almost deviate too much from whatever the 3D recipe is. Or maybe it’s that Nintendo lingered in 2D when I felt that the series already graduated to 3D.
Nice interview! I appreciate the personal stories mixed with the game talk.

I think 2D Zelda prioritize gameplay over storytelling while 3D Zelda makes more of an impact.
Thanks! Looking forward to hearing your personal stories too :)

@@keatonreviews That could be it. Seeing the faces and expressions of the characters in 3D cutscenes also helps convey seriousness, whereas you can't help but not take the 2D games seriously.
