I enjoyed this video. I am in the process of selling all of my handbags except two. I started to realize that I was traveling down a deep dark hole and becoming obsessed with luxury handbags. Spending countless hours searching them up. I've decided to only keep my Chanel mini and LV palm springs mini and sell everything else. I thought I'd feel sad about that, but I'm actually really happy, it feels freeing.

This video really spoke to me because I have been lusting after every bag I saw bloggers use or get. I couldn't afford them so I stayed lusting bag after bag and one day I finally bought the Speedy B 30 DE and I loved it(I still love it). However, I still kept wanting bags because I kept telling myself "oh this bag will do this for me and that's different from this bag that I want, so when I can afford it, I'll get it." Then the epiphany of what if you could afford all these right now, would just buy them all and still want more? The answer was yes because thats what I do with clothes. So I had to take a step back and think would I have as many bags as I have clothes? I really want to have a more minimalistic because its a much more satisfactory way of living than just staying in an endless cycle of wanting and buying. Thank you for sharing and I will definitely be listening to the minimalist podcasts.

If expensive luxury handbags emit a sense of style and class, then I am proud to wear my plain looking unexpensive belongings. I come from a humble background. To me, people who wear designer clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry etc do not portray a favorable image. I expect many people are like this. I feel like rich people who buy luxury items only to show off to other rich people. The vast majority of normal folk (both rich and poor) really don't care. This is my two cents.

Totally agree: experiences are much more important that material things. When I buy a lux handbag, the excitement is in the TH-cam research, the purchase, the receiving, and then about a few weeks later, its just another 'thing' in my wardrobe. Whereas experiences are memories to experience with loved ones and to keep forever. I have unsubscribed from many YT channels that simply talk about purchasing luxury goods as it does get boring after a while (and of course costly!)

I have also decided not to chase after luxury bags as I found I was buying bags for the sake of keeping up with other lux lovers and I had realised I wasn't appreciating the bags I already have. Some youtubers I follow make me question their reason for buying another luxury bag as they have so many in their collection and whether they appreciate what they have or buying for the sake of having a bag cos everyone has it. I've stopped buying more bags as I realised I have not utilise the ones I already have and I don't think buying another bag justifies in adding to my collection. Good on those who have the financial means to buy a lux bag regularly but for me I feel I have way too much and I wish I was smarter in choosing bags to have in my collection because I will use them and not to look at. Anyway, rant over!

Miss Christine's Closet I totally agree. It’s kinda sad. Their are people with an amazing collection but they just keep buying & buying. I think they are addicted to buying more than anything else. Maybe to fill a hole or need in their life. The amount of money some spend on bag after bag can purchase a home or car or food for others.

VR Mom of Four I had read about how beauty youtubers are not even buying their makeup as they get sponsored and say that the product is their absolute favourite and then you don't see them use it ever again. I think it is starting to look like that with the lux bag videos. I don't believe that their new purchases gets used more than once. The new bag gets put away as display cos there is another new bag for unboxing!!!

    • @vrmomoffour9446
      @vrmomoffour9446 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Miss Christine's Closet I could see that as a possibility. I LOVE Bags. I do. But as an educator & mother of 4 it’s not practical or possible to buy a Hermès bag ($10,000+) a Chanel bag ($4,000+) a Gucci bag ($2-3,000+) a Louis Vuitton ($2,000+) in a few months to a year!!! How does one spend $20k or MORE on handbags in a year or so?? It’s mind boggling. If you’re able then it’s your money. But it just seems a waste. A sad waste of ones money. Again it’s theirs to do as they please. I like looking at bags, they are beautiful to me. But I use every bag I have. I rotate daily sometimes. I like how Eva is reminding us that there are MORE important things to life then spending & buying. Hope you have a wonderful upcoming week...thanks for chatting with me Doll.

Miss Christine's Closet I couldn’t agree more Christine! I have been feeling the same way and have sold 4 of my bags on the last few months for the same reasons as you! I still have so many that I don’t use and I want to use my bags so, I have a lot more to sell and I know exactly what I want my “collection” to look like and the number I want. It’s so hard for me though because IG and TH-cam make it so hard to not want a beautiful bag that someone else has! I need more self control!! I am truly blessed and I need to learn to be grateful for what I have and stop looking!!

Rose LuvsLux I have stopped buying lux bags because it got to the point that I was buying for the rush of having bags that my fav youtubers had and realized that most were actually impractical for my everyday life!! I love my LV Neverfull MM as it is very easy to use and not as delicate to handle. I'm glad that not everyone finds lux bags as practical as they were portrayed to be.

I am likewise thinking of selling some of my stuff but I do hope to have the same courage and bravery like you have. Hello Eva, you have made a decision in life most people learn very late. I think travel and seeing how people live in other parts of the world makes you appreciate what you have. I stumbling across the video and wanted to let you know how much I agree and love it. I was also designer goods obsessed and am also growing out of it and into minimalism. I'm mostly over these things everyone else has and want the useful, the unusual, and things made by artists who aren't as high profile. Luxury collection from a few steps away is ridiculous and somewhat of a scam. When you travel and learn to live comfortably from a suitcase, you do learn a lot about what's really important. Love your channel and your message.

You look stunning Eva. Red is great on you. Love your minimal approach. When I was moving out of my parent's home, I had very few items. I went through everything to make sure I only had what I needed. I have since then liked a minimal life. But as far as bags, last year I started purchasing higher end bags. Even though I have been wanting to shop recently, I haven't as I am saving for my travels next year. The bags will be there but traveling brings so much joy.

And I especially love your comment about paying more attention when people are trying to have a conversation with you instead of keeping your head buried in your phone. And traveling more is awesome. I absolutely love this video. I very much went through a similar thing where after travelling a lot all over the world for work (I am a Zoologist) and going to countries where kids were happy out playing in the street with just a can, it made me rethink "material" objects. It was after I came back from Vietnam last year actually that made me realise that you don't need possessions to be happy and that we can work all day, every day to make money to live in houses we can't afford, drive cars that are too expensive and to own items that when you step back and look at it are kinda astronomical for what they actually are. I sold nearly all my designer bags, downsized my house, got rid of my new car I had on higher purchase and got a second hand car all so I can free up money and travel. For me travel has helped me really ground myself and I applaud you for this video! You rock!

Really needed to hear that. I went a little overboard with designer handbags these past couple of months because I got a raise. But I seriously need to stop. I already have enough handbags as it is. But this year I bought my first real designer bags (Givenchy, Marc Jacobs) and a couple of contemporary designers (Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Ted Baker). I love everything I got though. I never knew bags can be so well made. I was poor my whole life, it’s a nice experience when I can buy myself something nice. I just have to be careful and not spend more than I can afford! I most definitely don’t NEED all those things. But I wanted to experience luxury handbags and I actually love them and will use them my whole life. What I buy I make sure that it’s something I’ll love and use and it will be all worth it at the end. Thank you for the video. It’s really inspiring :)

I think finding personal contentment is a very important thing, whether someone is into bags, travel, etc. I totally agree with only keeping things you actually use and love (whether it's very few things or a lot of things). I've been doing a big closet clean out over the past year and sold almost all of my bags... not because I don't love bags and clothes, but because I wasn't using those ones anymore. Now I feel like I can replace some of it with stuff I'll use and enjoy now and not have clutter. All about balance. :)

This video was very inspiring, Eva. I can also get lost on wanting new things instead of enjoying what I already have, specially clothing wise. I find that it takes me unnecessary time to think about those wanted items, and also the money that I spend in those when I finally can't resist anymore. I aim to feel more free and be happy with what I have (which is more than the necessary) and start spending time on the things that really matter. Thanks for being an example of mindful consumer, it is refreshing after all those huge hauls that are on TH-cam. xxx

I have started purchasing designer bags and I am nowhere close to where you were, but I'm older by far and for me handbags are for after the mortgage was paid and extras were available and I stick to 2 per year, but i understand how easy it is to get lost in just acquiring stuff because ppl around you seem to have so much. It has given me a lot to think about and as you spoke I listed any handbag i wasn't using for sale. Wise words. Look inside and find what works for you personally as opposed to blindly following other ppl in their pursuits.

I think any collection can become an addiction Eva ☺ I got to the grand old age of 56 before I finally acquired a mulberry - something I had wanted since I was 18. That furs purchase kicked off a 'want' monster in me😳 I joined a Facebook group and before I knew it was buying bags like I could afford it and was never never satisfied . All my bags except a recent Cisco purchase have been pre-loved.
I bought and sold several and after about 9 months realised what I actually liked and would use . I then sold loads of things, and since then if I want something I have to think - "what would I sell in order to own that?"often I realise I like the things I already own more than the prospective purchase - so why would I buy that new-to-me thing?
I'm happy to say my daughter hasn't got into the current 'materialistic ' fervour that's currently rampant on TH-cam ( not you btw) - she's more interested in saving to travel (like you ) and buying a flat with her boyfriend .

Such a great video! I love your minimalist philosophy and that you can still appreciate the aesthetic / art of fashion. It’s so important to explore new places and appreciate what you have. This is a great philosophy especially for those of us who live in cities. NYC living has taught me to be more mindful and thoughtful in a similar way. I love exploring fashion in museums and often to see collections in stores as if they were museum exhibits so that I can appreciate the craftsmanship and keep up with developments in fashion but avoid endless accumulation, which does not fit an urban lifestyle.

Wow!! This video was so appropriate for me right now - I also having been thinking the same way this year - I've always been in the cycle of selling to fund another "new" bag and it has just gotten crazy. I've got 7 or 8 designer bags now and really only use 2or 3 on a regular basis. I've got 2 for sale right now but having a hard time letting go of some of the others I don't regularly use because I keep thinking about how hard I worked to finally get them and they are so beautiful, but then I think how ridiculous it all is - having all that money sitting there for what?? A handbag!!! I've got friends that use the same bag for a year before switching - why can't I do that 🙄. It is definitely a process and I can certainly see that 2018 will be quite different for me as well. My fiancé and I are planning a big trip next summer overseas and I want to be able to focus on the time we spend there together and seeing everything and not on what handbag "deals" I can get while I am there and how I will find those purchases. Great video and one I will return to probably multiple times to remind me of the important things 😂😂😊.

Great message. I'm in the process of paring down my possessions too. The things I acquire or hold on to are to help me better enjoy the lifestyle I want for myself. This includes maintaining good health, spending quality time with my family/friends and traveling.

I’m trying to curate nearly everything in my home. I can not see myself as a minimalist but minimally excessive? Lol work in progress obviously. I love that you’re so thoughtful. Thanks for sharing.

Great video... I've always bought want I "wanted" instead of what I needed. So, I would have a bunch of expensive hand bags, but my workout close would be all ratty and old... About a year ago, I started buying what I needed instead of what I wanted and I am learning to be my comfortable with my day to day needs instead. Doing this has made me realize that I don't need all those luxury items to be fulfilled and I feel more content. Now, I can now talk myself out of buying just about anything which is a great feeling. I used to buy just for the sake of buying and I don't do that any longer. You cannot fill yourself up with bags to bring you happiness and it's a great lesson to be learned.

I really like your approach. Have been through a very similar process as you. Sold about 75% of my bags and nearly all my LV bags (too popular for me). Instead bought three Céline bags over a long period of time and am very happy with them. Currently I am looking for a specific Hermès purse. And most of my shoes are from Tod's and Ferragamo. I prefer having only very high quality and rather rare items that aren't popular on social media. In my social environment nobody has bags like this.
BTW, I also dropped my one in one out rule since I really want to cut down on the total stuff I own. And I had to sell several other bags to afford only one e.g. Céline. :)
Also regarding minimalism there's so much to learn as you said. What really matters in life is definitely not material stuff.
My husband and I also traveled through Europe during the last few years. But we try to avoid RyanAir et al b/c I don't agree with their policies and I don't want to gain anything on the expenses of others. We live in Germany, so fortunately we have a very good railway system connecting us with many neighboring countries.
Have a nice trip to Milan.

Good video Eva. You really need to assess what brings you joy and keep those things. Travel is amazingly important and it so expands your horizons. I'm the same, trips are necessary. It helps you know yourself and enjoy things more. I've also found I like shopping way more than buying:) they are really two separate activities.

Great video! I absolutely resonate with your video, and i also went through the same phase as yourself this year. I just realise that i spent so much of my time curating, tidying up material stuff which could put into better use like reading. Looking back, i realise I don't need to own these pieces to feel satisfied or happy and that it was a disease of buying to fill some sort of void within myself. It is an endless cycle of fuelling more wants rather than feeling content. This also applies to my wardrobe. Now, I just look at the video on bags I like and just keep it that way. Unfortunately, I havent been able to resell my bags at a reasonable price, which makes me beat myself for silly past decisions :( and I have to maximise using them till I think it's reasonable to let them go at that price.

Thanks for sharing your insight and minimalist journey, Eva. I started watching those TH-cam channels too, and find that it is helping me to question my latest shopping sprees and bag wishlist items 🤣. You're absolutely right, bags are to be used and loved, and sometimes we get caught up in the 'wanting and lusting' (aka obsession sometimes), from our fave influencers lol. It's nice to reel things in and reflect once in awhile, and reassess your wardrobe and collection 🤗.

Hi Eva, I'm a subscriber from Texas & very much enjoy your channel! I loved this video and admire your way of thinking! Looking forward to an update on the SAD video you made last year on seasonal depression. Could you do another video on that and if you feel being more minimalistic could possibly help with seasonal depression?

Just a bit to add in a reply to minimizing your collection I love it! I currently have 4 bags in my collection: be Speedy 30 in ebene, pochette matis in monogram, faborite in ebene and a neverfull that I use on road trips only. My dream bag is the 2.55 Chanel reissue like you have. I need to watch more of the videos that you have made on that bag because I'm undecided on the size. Do you have the smallest or the medium in that bag?

Excellent advice!! I was the same way with the Goyard tote....I thought oh yes, I need a tote! But it was so not my cup of tea. I am a very organized person and to have stuff just jumbled around inside it would drive me nuts. I even bought a bag organizer and it still didn't make me happy with the bag. So unfortunately I sold it, but I agree that you shouldn't have stuff just to have it! I am not a collector either.

Great video, I see your point. I have a question how long did it take you to to accumulate your entire handbag collection prior to selling them. I ask because I have been collected for 11 years only 1 bag per year. But the last 2 years I haven’t made a purchase I spent my bag money on a vacation.

Great video! I feel exactly the same. I really like travelling and if I had a million I would use it for travel in a heartbeat. I’m also not a collector. I just happen to like beautiful things.lol glad you are appreciating the minimalist idea. I feel that it’s a practical one for our generation where material things are desired a lot.
It’s true that travelling (not touring) really makes you realize what’s imporatant and what we really want. If you have the chance make a trip to Tibet. You will feel very humbled and overwhelmed at the same time by it’s beauty and character.
