I have a reallly crazy theory, but I think that Grace's powers link to Ash Morgenstern's as mentioned in Ghosts of the Shadow market, Ash can make people love him and so can Grace. . .maybe they're related somehow by Lilith or the Seelie Queen. Maybe Benedict and the Seelie Queen had a child, Grace, or with Lilith because the Seelie queen is a faerie not a demon. Idk, i hope this theory is correct!

I like the nickname Daisy because Cordelia picked it herself, in the extras snippet she says she likes the nickname and James says “Why shouldn’t we call you Daisy, if you like it?” I like that it shows Cordelia’s self assuredness and even at a young age James admiring her choice and confidence. I do love Layla better, but I like that it is a family nickname.

So you're telling me that a woman named Cordelia Townsend married John Carstairs who has a distant relation who was also named Cordelia. Nah fam. Keep in mind that Cassie connected Clary and Tessa by just having their last names sound alike. Now there are two characters in two different series who have the same name. Something is afoot. I don't trust it.
the name fray was a combination of the “f” from fairchild and the “ray” from gray that jocelyn and tessa and magnus came up with when she first met with magnus so she could properly hide her identity. that’s why they sound familiar. it’s from one of the novellas in the bane chronicles

So i have a theory that when grace mentions at the end of the book that she needs the bracelet to manipulate james because of his blood, it may be because that her powers were given to her by belial and so he(belial) is immune to her powers. And as james is belial's grandson and shares his blood, even he has this immunity to her charms, which is why grace has to use the bracelet that was given to her by Belial to make the spell work on James and constantly have him touch or kiss her to reinforce the power of the spell.
I have a theory that Belial's 'anchor' that he refers to in the epilogue is Sona's unborn baby. My reasons: - we've had weird baby stuff happen in every series so far (valentine's experiments, lilith's experiments, mortmain's experiments, the ultra powerful faerie babies) - the way the information was given to us was weirdly random and I definitely didn't notice any build up to it - there was no allusions to her changing her behaviours in any way, which is a staple when it comes to pregnancy arcs, - there's no third kid in the tree! And yes, the tree is misleading and all, but that feels like a pretty blatant missing piece!

Oooh I didn't think about the idea of Valentine getting his ideas from Benedict Lightwood's book. Valentine probably chose to groom Robert Lightwood into the circle so that he had access to Benedict's works because the Lightwoods are probably ashamed of the works and keep it hidden in their family archives.
Theory: Wayland the Smith was an Iron Sister who made Cortana of Adamas with that infused feather and that's why we don't get a first name too. Also, SPOILERS FOR TDA AND TLH, Cortana is just amazing when you think about it. It was used at the gateway for Cordelia to reach James, it stabbed one of the princes of hell, it went through the black book of the dead or whatever its name was, it killed one of the riders of mannan, who were supposed to be untouchable... we stan Cortana
Maybe later on James walks through a dimension where Grace never lost her parents, making her Grace Cartwright instead of Grace Blackthorn, and she's actually really nice. Maybe they dump evil Grace in that dimension and take nice Grace back with them and that's who marries Christopher.
I couldn´t get through the last pages of the book without crying, but I was also SO FURIOUS at Grace and James and that whole situation. What a mix of emotions. I generally loved this book as an opener for a new series, so many plot lines & amazing characters!
this is the first series where i actually really love all of the main characters and even though they make bad decisions they are greatly depicted as just people, with both flaws and virtues. i think cassie's character writing is better and better in every next book! also, there is soooo many good quotes to live by in this one! and also i LOVE how it's the first time we don't have all of the mains living in the same house and we can see the different ways of interaction between families. can't wait to see more of alastair and what's gonna happen with him, his relationship with cordelia is one of the best arcs in this book imo. and anna freaking lightwood I LOVE HER - also you forgot cecily in mentioning the badass lightwood women, hope to see more of her interaction with the kids!
that quote will said to cordelia... something about how as a child he loved his father and then later he hated his father, and now that he is a father himself he knows he was simply a man, living his life and doing his best. that quote ruined me. such a relatabile storyline from will and cordelia here
I almost cried reading it because I went through the exact same thing with my own father. I never became a parent to understand him but the way that Cassie mentioned it in Chain of Gold really hit me hard. Also knowing that and rereading the scene where Will is crying about the death of his parents gives it a whole new level.

Same here, I went through adoration to resentment as I was growing up and learning more about my parents to now starting to realise my parents are merely people themselves; that they live their life the best they can the same way I'm trying to. I haven't arrived at the forgiveness Will had just yet, but I see it coming with time and Cassie just confirmed that suspicion for me through Will.
Milana Terzić it’s hard it sucks but forgiving them will set you free when he’s gone. It hurts you the most when it’s all said and done. I felt what you did as well as what we see though Will. I wish you the best and a Herondale of your own
Just finished both halves of the review, Christine ranting about Tatiana and Grace is everything I never knew I needed. They made my most hated Shadowhunter characters list back in Bane Chronicles, and it looks like we're gonna be stuck with them for quite a while. Really like how this series is starting out. The Nine Princes of Hell threw me off a bit, as I'm more familiar with the Seven Princes of Hell, but it was an interesting twist. Only one I didn't peg was Belial, who I had thought would be Beelzebub, haha. My brain always stores the oddest information, so thankfully I never had to go back and re-read or skim over the past books to remember things. Going into this I was very skeptical on the whole eventual Jesse x Lucie thing (I know the family tree isn't to be fully trusted, I'm just pretty sure they're going to be endgame), as I was fairly certain being raised by a nut job would have affected him in some pretty negative ways. Least so far the apple seems to have fallen far from the bitter, rotten tree. I'm just assuming at one point Jesse turns against his mother and then rejoins the Shadowhunters, hence the Blackthorns in TDA. Still not a fan of all the love triangles (or whatever shapes they're closer to at the moment XD), but overall the story is enjoyable. Magnus makes everything better, he is easily one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, Shadowhunter Chronicles character. Loved your review, hilarious as always
So I looked up the Carstairs line and yep Alastair had kids with an Unknown woman. But I was thinking since Sona is pregnant once more, wouldn't that child continue the line and my brain started theorising that John might be adopted meaning Emma is adopted but then again the family tree isn't accurate, mate Cassie Clare said NOT to trust ANYTHING!

Honestlly Matthew stole the show (well the book here lol) for me. He honestly has the main protagonist energy and personality with such complexity and mistery around him. I love James but next to Matthew his character and personality kinda fades while Matt is giving me such Will/Jace aka the main guy energy. And about ship I honestlly wouldnt even mind if Cordillia ended up with him insted of James (altho I didnt really see the chemestry between them, but it could be interesting since James and Cordilia are predictable) I was thinking Matt would end up with Lucie but now I'm so lost lol I just want Matthew happy
If you notice at the end, they talk about how James was meant to be “Prepared” for belial, so technically, graces bracelet not only hypnotises James, but was meant to have him accept belial, so maybe grace was in on it and makes up for it when she puts it on James in the end, that stupid bracelet!
So many emotions right now, I don’t know how I’ll wait for the next book, I think I’m going to go cry about every beautiful relationship in this story now

I have to say, it’s been years since I watched your videos like this, Christine, but I’m genuinely happy I got back to them. I started a book blog this past year and have gotten back into reading more, so it’s only fitting that I found your videos again. Also, a side note, but I just watched your reviews of the TDA books last night, and your eye color is how I imagine the Blackthorn’s eyes to look. It’s not too vibrant but not too murky either. There’s just enough blue and green to mix together to make this really pretty aquamarine color. Sorry if that’s weird, but I’ve always had a weird obsession with eyes haha.
Cassandra also said that we'll see Magnus in a relationship in the next book and it's gonna be someone from Chain of Gold. Many people think that Matthew might be the one, but Alec was the first Shadowhunter Magnus fell for. Besides, in The Red Scrolls of Magic, there's a part in which Magnus says that he was 'close with Hypatia once, but it was over a century ago.' So I am almost completely sure that Magnus will be with Hypatia in this series. And I can't stop thinking about the next book, because there'll be so much angst but I love pain so whatever.

I agree with almost everything, except that Daisy to me sounds so cute, I love it. And my theory is that Grace's ability was given by Belial. Why? Because grace says when she gives the fucking bracelet to my James that she can't go against someone's blood unless he wears the chain, for me the chain is the bracelet. So, if Belial gave grace the ability to be a bitch with powers, she can't go against Belial, and James is related to him, so he has his blood and the power on him doesn't work unless he wears the chain. And that's why Belial says to Tatiana I think that when he went to the shadow realm he was protected because he wasn't wearing THE FUCKING BRACELET

this is LATE so idk if you’ll ever see this, but i’ve been watching your videos for YEARS and i remember when you were yelling about the infernal devices books while they were coming out - your video for clockwork prince really stuck in my mind and you were my FAVOURITE youtuber for like a solid year i was yelling about you to everyone. and then you published your own books and went on to do GREAT things and cassandra clare mentioned you on her own tumblr?? and now finally FINALLY chain of gold comes out and it’s such a masterpiece and i am SO excited and watching your video was just a punch in the face of utter nostalgia, like i’m 21 now and it feels like it’s been forever but also i feel like a kid again because i’ve been following these books and all the short stories and the buildup for years and years. all this to say that god watching this video felt like a blast from the past and hearing you yell about this book gave me the catharsis i’ve been missing after i read this book - none of my friends read cassandra clare anymore so none of them get why i’m going insane.

I have a reallly crazy theory, but I think that Grace's powers link to Ash Morgenstern's as mentioned in Ghosts of the Shadow market, Ash can make people love him and so can Grace. . .maybe they're related somehow by Lilith or the Seelie Queen. Maybe Benedict and the Seelie Queen had a child, Grace, or with Lilith because the Seelie queen is a faerie not a demon. Idk, i hope this theory is correct!

I like the nickname Daisy because Cordelia picked it herself, in the extras snippet she says she likes the nickname and James says “Why shouldn’t we call you Daisy, if you like it?” I like that it shows Cordelia’s self assuredness and even at a young age James admiring her choice and confidence. So i have a theory that when grace mentions at the end of the book that she needs the bracelet to manipulate james because of his blood, it may be because that her powers were given to her by belial and so he(belial) is immune to her powers. And as james is belial's grandson and shares his blood, even he has this immunity to her charms, which is why grace has to use the bracelet that was given to her by Belial to make the spell work on James and constantly have him touch or kiss her to reinforce the power of the spell.
I have a theory that Belial's 'anchor' that he refers to in the epilogue is Sona's unborn baby.
My reasons:
- we've had weird baby stuff happen in every series so far (valentine's experiments, lilith's experiments, mortmain's experiments, the ultra powerful faerie babies)
- the way the information was given to us was weirdly random and I definitely didn't notice any build up to it - there was no allusions to her changing her behaviours in any way, which is a staple when it comes to pregnancy arcs,
- there's no third kid in the tree! And yes, the tree is misleading and all, but that feels like a pretty blatant missing piece!

As much as I love the Infernal Devices, I might have a new favorite series. I mean, obviously the other two books will have to come out before I can be sure, but damn this was good holy crap. This book combines the ensemble cast vibe we got in TMI and TDA with the rich historical aura of TID

Oooh I didn't think about the idea of Valentine getting his ideas from Benedict Lightwood's book. Valentine probably chose to groom Robert Lightwood into the circle so that he had access to Benedict's works because the Lightwoods are probably ashamed of the works and keep it hidden in their family archives.
Theory: Wayland the Smith was an Iron Sister who made Cortana of Adamas with that infused feather and that's why we don't get a first name too.
Also, SPOILERS FOR TDA AND TLH, Cortana is just amazing when you think about it. It was used at the gateway for Cordelia to reach James, it stabbed one of the princes of hell, it went through the black book of the dead or whatever its name was, it killed one of the riders of mannan, who were supposed to be untouchable... we stan Cortana
Maybe later on James walks through a dimension where Grace never lost her parents, making her Grace Cartwright instead of Grace Blackthorn, and she's actually really nice. Maybe they dump evil Grace in that dimension and take nice Grace back with them and that's who marries Christopher.
I couldn´t get through the last pages of the book without crying, but I was also SO FURIOUS at Grace and James and that whole situation. What a mix of emotions. I generally loved this book as an opener for a new series, so many plot lines & amazing characters!

this is the first series where i actually really love all of the main characters and even though they make bad decisions they are greatly depicted as just people, with both flaws and virtues. i think cassie's character writing is better and better in every next book! also, there is soooo many good quotes to live by in this one! and also i LOVE how it's the first time we don't have all of the mains living in the same house and we can see the different ways of interaction between families. can't wait to see more of alastair and what's gonna happen with him, his relationship with cordelia is one of the best arcs in this book imo. and anna freaking lightwood I LOVE HER - also you forgot cecily in mentioning the badass lightwood women, hope to see more of her interaction with the kids!

I almost cried reading it because I went through the exact same thing with my own father. I never became a parent to understand him but the way that Cassie mentioned it in Chain of Gold really hit me hard. Also knowing that and rereading the scene where Will is crying about the death of his parents gives it a whole new level.

Same here, I went through adoration to resentment as I was growing up and learning more about my parents to now starting to realise my parents are merely people themselves; that they live their life the best they can the same way I'm trying to. I haven't arrived at the forgiveness Will had just yet, but I see it coming with time and Cassie just confirmed that suspicion for me through Will.

Just finished both halves of the review, Christine ranting about Tatiana and Grace is everything I never knew I needed. They made my most hated Shadowhunter characters list back in Bane Chronicles, and it looks like we're gonna be stuck with them for quite a while. Really like how this series is starting out. The Nine Princes of Hell threw me off a bit, as I'm more familiar with the Seven Princes of Hell, but it was an interesting twist. Only one I didn't peg was Belial, who I had thought would be Beelzebub, haha. My brain always stores the oddest information, so thankfully I never had to go back and re-read or skim over the past books to remember things. Going into this I was very skeptical on the whole eventual Jesse x Lucie thing (I know the family tree isn't to be fully trusted, I'm just pretty sure they're going to be endgame), as I was fairly certain being raised by a nut job would have affected him in some pretty negative ways. Least so far the apple seems to have fallen far from the bitter, rotten tree. I'm just assuming at one point Jesse turns against his mother and then rejoins the Shadowhunters, hence the Blackthorns in TDA. Still not a fan of all the love triangles (or whatever shapes they're closer to at the moment XD), but overall the story is enjoyable. Magnus makes everything better, he is easily one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, Shadowhunter Chronicles character. Loved your review, hilarious as always

Honestlly Matthew stole the show (well the book here lol) for me. He honestly has the main protagonist energy and personality with such complexity and mistery around him. I love James but next to Matthew his character and personality kinda fades while Matt is giving me such Will/Jace aka the main guy energy.
And about ship I honestlly wouldnt even mind if Cordillia ended up with him insted of James (altho I didnt really see the chemestry between them, but it could be interesting since James and Cordilia are predictable) I was thinking Matt would end up with Lucie but now I'm so lost lol I just want Matthew happy
If you notice at the end, they talk about how James was meant to be “Prepared” for belial, so technically, graces bracelet not only hypnotises James, but was meant to have him accept belial, so maybe grace was in on it and makes up for it when she puts it on James in the end, that stupid bracelet!

I have to say, it’s been years since I watched your videos like this, Christine, but I’m genuinely happy I got back to them. I started a book blog this past year and have gotten back into reading more, so it’s only fitting that I found your videos again. Also, a side note, but I just watched your reviews of the TDA books last night, and your eye color is how I imagine the Blackthorn’s eyes to look. It’s not too vibrant but not too murky either. There’s just enough blue and green to mix together to make this really pretty aquamarine color. Sorry if that’s weird, but I’ve always had a weird obsession with eyes haha.
Cassandra also said that we'll see Magnus in a relationship in the next book and it's gonna be someone from Chain of Gold. Many people think that Matthew might be the one, but Alec was the first Shadowhunter Magnus fell for. Besides, in The Red Scrolls of Magic, there's a part in which Magnus says that he was 'close with Hypatia once, but it was over a century ago.' So I am almost completely sure that Magnus will be with Hypatia in this series.
And I can't stop thinking about the next book, because there'll be so much angst but I love pain so whatever.

But like, yes I feel really bad for Grace because clearly Tatiana does not care about her and has isolated her from everyone and treated her like crap, but she still did all of the stuff that she did and I can not ignore that.

I had the thought that Grace was possessed....especially when her coloring and Belial's coloring are similar.
I agree with almost everything, except that Daisy to me sounds so cute, I love it. And my theory is that Grace's ability was given by Belial. Why? Because grace says when she gives the fucking bracelet to my James that she can't go against someone's blood unless he wears the chain, for me the chain is the bracelet. So, if Belial gave grace the ability to be a bitch with powers, she can't go against Belial, and James is related to him, so he has his blood and the power on him doesn't work unless he wears the chain. And that's why Belial says to Tatiana I think that when he went to the shadow realm he was protected because he wasn't wearing THE FUCKING BRACELET

this is LATE so idk if you’ll ever see this, but i’ve been watching your videos for YEARS and i remember when you were yelling about the infernal devices books while they were coming out - your video for clockwork prince really stuck in my mind and you were my FAVOURITE youtuber for like a solid year i was yelling about you to everyone. and then you published your own books and went on to do GREAT things and cassandra clare mentioned you on her own tumblr??
and now finally FINALLY chain of gold comes out and it’s such a masterpiece and i am SO excited and watching your video was just a punch in the face of utter nostalgia, like i’m 21 now and it feels like it’s been forever but also i feel like a kid again because i’ve been following these books and all the short stories and the buildup for years and years.
all this to say that god watching this video felt like a blast from the past and hearing you yell about this book gave me the catharsis i’ve been missing after i read this book - none of my friends read cassandra clare anymore so none of them get why i’m going insane.
