    This instructor reminds me of mine. Mine was much younger at 22 but he always kept his cool and never raised his voice and never jerked controls from me. Have to say these instructors dont come around often. Very helpful and keeps giving out info that his trainee is missing.but in a positive way that his trainee will come to do all on his own as he learns!Awesome job...Trainee picked up on the radio really fast, I had no issues catching on the controlling but took a bit longer on the radio lingo.

    Great videos! While I can't afford to learn/fly real helicopters, I'm taking everything you're showing here into FlightSim 2020. Thank you for providing all these great videos of the training exercises.

      Excellent! How is it going in the sim? Does it model everything OK?

      @@HelicopterTrainingVideos it's not perfect, but I think it does a good job getting close. Not getting the feel the motion I think is the biggest drawback.

    looks improved from the first videos. hes gotta start making those base calls as he is beginning the turn from downwind. instead of saying "turning right base to final for runway 16", just say "turning right base 16". and no need to say "runway" or "base to final" they know its a runway and if you are "turning base", then they know you are at the corner and they know where base leads to. clear, concise info. who you are, where you are, where you are going. no more, no less.

      lol i stopped the video to post that comment after the mishap with the other helo already on final. as i continued watching, you said the exact same thing to him that i said in my comment.

      mbdolfin I wanted to fly for 20 years. It's costly though. I started training in a fixed wing and once l tried the helicopter, I knew l should of started with that from the beginning. It's definitely harder though. I've only logged about 8h in the R22.

  • @3enjoy3
    @3enjoy3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Not wanting to appear ignorant but what is the purpose of lengthy 'air taxi' manoeuvres following the yellow lines and also similar along the runway when, by design, helicopters can take off and land vertically? Is it just for experience and skill in maintaining extreme low level flight? I feel like I have asked a really stupid question!

    • @HelicopterTrainingVideos
      @HelicopterTrainingVideos  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      3enjoy3 Great question. Most of the time a helicopter will 'avoid the flow of fixed wing traffic' by flying in almost directly to the landing spot and reduce the hovering maneuvers. But the low level hovering maneuvers you see in the video are for two reasons - 1> To practice hovering maneuvers and aircraft control. 2> To make movement of helicopters around the airport predictable - Bend airport is one of the busiest helicopter training locations and it would be dangerous and chaotic to allow students to make 'random' approaches and departures.

    what kind of maneuvers do helicopter pilots use to practice? as a fixed wing CFI i know we use steep turns, s turns, chandelles, lazy eights, etc.. what are some things used in helicopter training? really curious and considering to learn to fly helis as well

    • @HelicopterTrainingVideos

      Good question - no chandels or lazy eights - here is a list with short examples of each: th-cam.com/play/PLJ8xtPILNIlg6Q8oJmpxNzR1xKf7sJP5a.html

    What are they talking about after they make their first turn when they say "4000"?

    • @HelicopterTrainingVideos
      @HelicopterTrainingVideos  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THEOreticalAPEX 4,000 feet MSL (above mean sea level - as shown on the altimeter) - about 500' AGL (above the ground level) - it is the traffic pattern altitude for helicopters at that airport.

      Helicopter Training Videos Ah okay thank you for the response. Does the altimeter show both MSL and AGL?

    • @HelicopterTrainingVideos
      @HelicopterTrainingVideos  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      THEOreticalAPEX In these small training helicopters we just have an MSL altimeter. We do have an R44 helicopter that also has a radar altimeter that displays AGL.

    I struggle to see much correlation between the control inputs and the aircraft attitude and direction. The cyclic doesn't appear to be obviously pushed in any clear direction even when simply moving forwards. I have never flown anything successfully so my experience is zero. I can ride motorbikes and drive cars, lorries and boats etc and I have a mechanical aptitude. Helicopters just dont seem to be, umm, intuitive, I think thats the word

    • @HelicopterTrainingVideos

      Yeah the movement is very small. More like just pressure changes. Very sensitive.
