Lol just noticed that right after the warning about staying away from windows and everyone turns to look at them, Jim starts moving in sync with humphry... he is trying to make sure Humphrey will take the bullet lol.
"Of course there's also gassing, throttling, stabbing (stabs letter opener on the desk), drowning, garroting, and ritual disemboweling, but they are relatively uncommon in the UK." Lol. Graeme truly steals this scene.
This whole scene with Graeme and particularly that parting recommendation to Jim is one of my favorites in the whole series. I remember it all the time and laugh.
Jim's facial expression, right after commander Forest asks if he has any questions... Priceless! 😄 He really could act with just his facial expressions, Paul Eddington. He'll be sorely missed...
Being stabbed in the leg with the end of a stick was a reference to the Bulgarian Georgi Markof dissident killed by the Bulgarians after being jabbed by an assailant on Waterloo Bridge in 1978. The jab left a small poisoned ball in his leg that did for him.
when the threat was over Hacker was of two minds, one being the threat to his life, the other, that he was no longer important enough to assassinate, the latter seemed to bother him the most.
He's got a high morbid sense of humour. Nobody can beat the minister's trying to say something but unable to say it. His facial gestures are just too good. Marvelous cast.
There was a time when all of this was quite shocking. And seeing a person with a gun - you would indeed react the way Jim does. It feels ridiculous to call the 80s an age of innocence yet looking back...
That's how a real non-military person would react. Us kids under 12 were just thinking "hm, rather small for a gun" then we would rewatch "First Blood" cheering at the finale when Rambo is demolishing the police precinct with an M-60 machinegun.
That's kind of true to an extent. I'm in the U.S., and some states here have what are called "open carry" and/or "conceal carry" laws, meaning a citizen, with a permit of course, can carry a firearm. Some states either don't offer it, or are very difficult to obtain one. For instance, in the state I live in, California, it is very difficult to obtain one, even if you are a cop or military wanting to carry on your off time, or in retirement. So in states like California, people are not accustomed to seeing people walk around carrying guns. But, when I lived in Nevada, which is an "open carry" state, it was actually fairly common to see people with side arms. I lived in Nevada in the Las Vegas region. I'm very pro second amendment. But even I was a little shocked at first, being a native Californian, as I was not used to seeing anyone other than cops openly carrying guns. My point being is that I think it's just a culture shock, than anything to do with "innocence" of a time. The British do not have an equivalent of our second amendment, and even cops don't carry them for the most part. So I can see how that would be very shocking to a Brit.
I have friends who have gone to America and used shooting ranges. That really freaks me out. It is becoming such a normalised thing that civilians are trained to use guns.
After this car crash of a security briefing, jim is understandably more terrified and scared for his life, than he was after finding out he was on a terrorist death list.
what''s also funny is that later, when Jim finds out that the Special Branch has determined that he isn't enough of a "high-profile" target for assassination, Jim is conflicted - on the one hand he is relieved that there isn't a thread, but on the other hand his ego is bruised because he's just not that important :)
I know we can buy this great show on here or on dvd 📀 but why don't you bbc put it on normal TV, might be worth paying the license fee tax then, and I'm sure that the blind, who have to pay a licence tax would love to listen to this show
This was from the 80s so probably referring to the IRA, now could mean anyone any number of assassins: lone wolf, Russian mafia/KGB, Muslim radical, far right radical...please bring back the 80s.
Lol just noticed that right after the warning about staying away from windows and everyone turns to look at them, Jim starts moving in sync with humphry... he is trying to make sure Humphrey will take the bullet lol.
Little touches like this are amusing on rewatch.
He would have loved Sir Humphrey taking the bullet...
May be in search of an assassin..
He also pushes his answering machine towards Humphrey after the Inspector mentions electrocution.😆

Lol. Graeme truly steals this scene.
All those are probably not uncommon these days.
He certainly does. Note also the upward motion of the letter opener at the “ritual disembowelling” point!
A classic scene; the expert who's supposed to put you at ease putting you on edge instead! 🤣
Everyone in the room, except the expert, growing increasingly uncomfortable and restless as they discover how many ways they could die.

Ah, so they got him after all?
Jim's bombastic speech right before this bit should be included it makes this magnificent scene complete.
I love the bit about hitting the other car from the axle and sweeping it aside, and Hacker's expression and hand motion!!
"Assassination hazards fall broadly into four categories: that's bullets, bombs, poisons, and so-called accidents." (grabs letter opener from Jim)
Paul Eddington’s facial expressions and body language are an acting master class 😂.
He could convey so much with a little change of expression, a master of it.
Graeme Garden stealing the scene. At least one of this superb cast is still alive and kicking.

.....it's a little weird how pragmatic this actually was. So many TV series do potential assassinations wrong.
How do they do it wrong?
If you’re on an assassination list and your only protection is an ex-Goodie pretending to be a police officer, you know you’re in trouble!
‘Course you don’t’ line gets a big laugh. This is why there’s a place for studio audiences in sitcoms. That laugh makes that line even funnier.
I really like the part when he mentioned the category 'Accident'. OMG that was too hilarious
1:50 I like how even Bernard inches further away from the window after the warning.
Wow, to have that conversation with just facial expressions is supreme acting.
I’ve seen this episode several times over the decades but only now recognized Graeme Garden, one third of the Goodies, as Commander Forrest.
One of the best-written sit coms EVER.

I LOVE the fact that so many are referring to The Goodies!! Same age (as in Bronze or Iron (as per David Mitchell) rather than numerical) group!
If he had continued any longer poor Jim would've had a heart attack and the assassin would've succeeded without trying XDD

I suspect that "Thank you Bernard!" moment at 0:47 was not scripted, just actor sat too long and scene was improvised.
