It is possible if you use something like a bicycle pump. You don't want to put in too much air. Make sure that the forks are extended fully before putting air in.
The progressive part was facing down when I took them apart. Inverted forks may be different. Some people claim that it doesn't make a difference. Other people claim that they make more noise if they are put in the opposite direction. I never had an issue with them.
