- In 1990, Ivan Zabcic and Marko Vukovic founded the company IM-Metal. It was located near the capitol of soon to be free Croatia, which broke away from Yugoslavia. By May of the next year, the company had its first prototype pistols ready to go, which was good as the new, young gov't was in desperate need of smallarms. This design was known as the Prvi Hrvatski Pistolj Marko Vukovic (PHP MV) or "First Croatian Pistol by Marko Vukovic."
Between 1991 and 1994, about 5,000 of the pistols were built and also the factory changed its name to HK Produkt. The guns saw both military and police issue in Croatia. The PHP MV-17 had a 5" barrel, and the compact MV-9 had a 4" one.
Historically, the PHP is interesting as it lead the company to create the Hrvatski Samokres 1995, or HS95; which itself lead to a polymer framed version known as the HS2000. Today we know the HS2000 as the XD pistol, imported by Springfield Armory Inc. Also it is standard issue within the Croatian Army.
