Film synopsis - Film Description: Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is just experiencing the pangs of first love when she's viciously murdered by her neighbor Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci), a predatory wolf in J.C. Penney clothing. As her family slowly begins drifting apart while struggling to make sense of their loss, Susie bravely attempts to find her footing in the hereafter. Meanwhile, down on earth, Mr. Harvey is feeling confident that he's covered his tracks well enough to get away with the crime, and begins honing in on his next victim -- Susie's younger sister, Lindsey (Rose McIver), who's beginning to suspect that he's not the harmless suburbanite he portrays himself to be. Director Peter Jackson reteams with King Kong and Lord of the Rings trilogy co-screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh to adapt Alice Sebold's bestselling novel for the big screen.
I studied this film for A level Film and I loved the entire film and could not find the full scene anywhere on the internet so I uploaded it for everybody to enjoy and maybe other film students will choose to study this clip also.
I uploaded this on my original account about 2 years ago but took it down when i wanted to start a serious channel without any copyright infringement. Thank you for watching, hope you enjoy

How I see this scene: Jack has started to realize that the murderer might not be a stranger, but maybe someone familiar. It is the unnerving thought most people probably don't want to think about. You push it away, until you need to consider it. He starts to see beyond Mr. Harvey's nice neighbor image and that's why he approaches him. To see his reaction. Finally he sees the roses and one of them starting to bloom, which is a straight reminder of Susie. The decayed rose is a symbol of something beautiful and sweet dying. Susie is like that decayed rose and she is there in Mr. Harvey's garden. The shock we see on Jack's face is because he knows then he has overlooked the red flags. He has not really seen Mr. Harvey at all. Until this moment he has mostly seemed like a nice guy, a harmless neighbor, even a bit pathetic. But once you really look at him you will understand the danger in that nice, but strange kind of a guy's image. Truth is he lives alone, he acts a bit strange and unusual, you never see him with anybody, he is always so nice but what do you actually know about him... And this is the most shocking thing of all, because then Jack realizes that he doesn't know him at all. He could be anything or anyone. The roses remind him of that day when they were admiring the roses with his wife and it is then he remembers seeing his interest in Susie in the way he glances at her. This subconscious warning sign now emerges and Jack is shocked he didn't fully understand it before. He can't escape it anymore. He needs to look at Mr. Harvey and think if he could be the one responsible, when he sees his reactions. First avoiding the encounter, then talking nonchalantly about being a hunter, the way he seems uncomfortable and wary of his sudden interest in him, the way he talks and looks at Jack like he is almost arrogant, boastful of something. When Jack watches him and sees the things on display he realizes Mr. Harvey acts guilty. There is fear and knowledge, even curiousity in his eyes when he looks at Jack and like a cherry on top you see him almost smirking at him straight to his face before rushing off. And it is right then when Jack knows this man knows what happened to his daughter. It was all there in his reactions. Jack only needed to watch him, to truly see this man and finally acknowledge the gut-wrenching thought that he had been too afraid to see all the signs that were always there.

The fact that Harvey wanted, not one, but *both* of Jack’s daughters always gets to me. Him alone wanting Susie was heartbreaking then he found it necessary to lay eyes on her sister. And the expression upon Jack’s face as he’s realizing he’s looking his little girls’ murderer in his eyes will forever be a tearjerker. This movie just goes to show that parents won’t stop when it comes to their children. They will not rest, they will not eat, until their children are safe or are brought to justice.
    -
    -
Edit: I’m just not realizing that the flashbacks are from each others POV, (Harvey’s and Jack’s) Jack’s POV, he’s noticing the predatory look on Harvey’s face but doesn’t pay no mind to it or just doesn’t see it the way most people would. Harvey is obviously paying more mind to Susie as she was his latest victim. All the pieces are finally coming together...

Where i come from, including the people around me, they’re ready to put down their lives for their kids. i’m not saying they should have to because no one should ever have to feel like that, but thats just the kind of world we live in.

Wow I never looked at it that way but it makes total sense. The flashbacks of Susie in the back taking pictures and calling to her parents is what Harvey was seeing from his POV. I’ve also heard that some people can’t watch his other roles knowing how creepy he was in this movie and how much they resented the character,so it sorta impacted his film career, but I see it as one of his best performances, the look in his eyes when he starts planning again, was truly haunting; psychotic.well done , movie managed to choke me up;especially mark wahlburg’s scenes.

I guess when the murderer hears the horrific cry of a battered father his expression changes, its subtle here, but the hurting cry of the Father really was woeful, a cry of loss and death and pain. It's sad that people didn't see the fathers and mothers pain in this movie at all. Their dear child was murdered and even the child lost everything, oh if only audience could feel the pain of all.

  • @KenoSNeal
    @KenoSNeal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +81

Watching this film again after so long this scene got even better. I love the expression on the dad's eyes. He's like "the answer was right in front of me the whole time." And it makes sense because victims often get killed by predators that they knew, and Harvey knew Susie long enough to make a connection with her in front of the parents, more specifically in Jack's presence. The dad was well aware that Harvey expressed an interest in his daughter. That was a passive moment that he never thought about twice much less realized until he picked up that flower. It was an instant reminder like "wow.. I actually had a conversation with this man before. He knows me and my family." So it was never about the dad getting an answer from the flower bloom. The bloom itself was an imaginary symbolic display of his wake up call which was his memory, and that's why this movie works so well. Father's instincts know how to put the pieces together. He knew that the police reports weren't going to find a damn thing, that he would have to listen for the answer and it would eventually come to him. The whole thing is sad.

Desirée Mena, I'm sorry for your loss. The movie does help to introduce another perspective on dying.

For those of you who write, "i don't get how Jack finds out", here are the six most likely reasons:
    1. Mr Harvey was always strange; one of the characters mentioned earlier that he's always been isolated.
    2. Hastily telling him to leave and talking about the "art of concealment" (like tf? 0_0)
    3. The current evidence at hand: "Susie wouldn't walk off with anyone, it had to be someone she knew."
    4. The photos; Jack never considered Mr Harvey as a suspect.
    5. The Camellias; Mr Harvey stopped watering them 'cause he used them to get a look at Susie.
    6. The memory of their first meeting; Jack only just now noticed that Mr Harvey was eyeing up his daughter at the time.
But most importantly, it came from a father's gut instinct. When Jack watched Mr Harvey tightly tying up those sticks, you too would be upset thinking about what he could've done to her. It may be unrealistic, but even your dad would've had a similar experience. I hope this was helpful. This is my favorite scene. Everyone says Wahlberg shouldn't have been in this role but i feel that he did a way better job than Gosling would've done. The pure horror in his eyes and when he's yelling, "Where is she?!" is just heartbreaking. :'(
Yes, there are some scenes they could've done without or done better but still, a well executed movie.

Thanks for this! It kind of summed out some things I was wondering about (I’ve never actually seen the movie in full) but do you know what happens after this clip? It cuts off at an annoying moment, I want to know if Jack gets the door down

This whole scene was done to perfection from the flower bloom, to Jack having flashbacks of conversing with Harvey and the unusual amount of of staring he was ginging to Susie, to coming to the realization that he is indeed the murderer.

This movie breaks my heart 😭 the fact that they portrayed the killer as a normal person just send chills down my spine... the man was their neighbor... and continued to be their neighbor.... like that shows that in real life these ppl can be anywhere ...

The look of utter hopelessness, lost in Marks eyes is heartbreaking. And to see the change of those eyes as he realizes what is in front of him does not lessen the heartbreak because that hopelessness transforms into incompetence. There is nothing he can do to change what has happened.

Taking a dark haired actor and making them blonde and blue eyed instantly adds creepiness (see Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four creepy).

i always think of mark as a comedic and funny guy, but he killed it in this movie. and i've seen stan in so many movies he can play so many different types of parts whether it's funny or emotional or even an animated voice. saoirse also did so good in this movie she was perfect for the role of susie

The look that Mark had when he put the pieces together, is, I don’t know what word to use. That look isn’t something you can recreate. I love Marks other movies but I loved seeing him portray someone that in some unfortunate cases, is relatable to some fathers out there.
I don’t believe that Jack heard Susie. I think she gave him intuition.

I recently re watched this movie just the other day, now that I have a child… it hits a little harder. I couldn’t help but ball my eyes out. The love a parent has for their child(ren) is unmatched man. Truly indescribable. And things like this happen everyday. I just pray for peace and protection over my family and babies, and for anyone that’s lost theirs.

Kinda wished they showed more proof with it, the scenes are beautiful but they don’t really have a lot of proof behind them.
I would believed it more if Mr. Harvey contradicted himself about her death and her dad caught on, or something like that.

His body language after he realised that Jack knew was full of guilt. I think this is a contradiction to what you’d expect from a serial killer as they are usually psychopaths, thus inherently unable to feel such emotions as guilt or regret. Being a father myself, this scene gives me the chills every time I see it.

  • @AceBanyon

This scene is acted splendidly. The facial expressions from both actors really sold it. The subtle realization that he is the one who killed his daughter is intense and the realization from the killer that he may be caught.

Am sure this is the pain all the families of missing Children/individuals feel. The whisper, the uncertainty, the feeling of not knowing. What hardship. 😢😢 This movie had a lot of flaws, but to anyone who has lost a loved one can relate... especially the whole afterlife element.
