RIP R. Sakamoto. You give to the world an extreme beauty in your musical compositions with a talent that is impossible to replace- You have changed the whole history of music , creating electronic music and heal sounds for the people. Eternal . You will be so missed.
This music is such a happy memory. I used to dance to this soundtrack throughout my great big sparse loft in SoHo w my Dalmatian Oliver long before all the over development in NYC. Thank you Ryuichi.
David Sylvian of the band Japan is singing, along with Sakamoto, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made.Love it ,makes me wanna cry, raw emotion.
This film is amazing. It explores the harsh extremities of Japanese traditions that as far back as ancient times. Honour being the most important thing. It also explores the difference between British and Japanese thinking. All of this as well as having a strong homosexual undercurrent. These are things that rarely ever get explored in films on their own let alone all at once.
I think this movie ois exceptional. This is probably the best performance David Bowie ever gave, except for his role in The Elephant Man. He was very sympathetic to the plight of his fellow soldiers .
Heard this when I was 13 and it made me realize how powerful and emotional the impact of music could be- and ever since, I have been striving to create something as beautiful as this piece....without much success I would add, but I'll never give up trying
This movie is in my top 10! And I don't really like war movies at that much. But this movie has much more of a psychological and human perspective to it. The way the director captured the characters' emotions is quite amazing!
I saw this film when it first came out and it has remained indelibly imprinted on my memory. When it ended I didn't want to leave the theater. The music went on for some time and it was so beautiful.
2 hommes prisonniers d'eux-mêmes pendant la guerre. Film captivant et poignant. Acteurs formidables. Musique superbe.
+PCmaatje At least Sakamoto seems to be beating his cancer, last I heard. Oshima's been gone about three years now, I think. There was a good writeup on him in The Japan Times a few days back.
Such a fabulous film & especially the ending that everyone of us should learn from that. we should all live in peace & learn to love each other? well played parts by all of the cast anyway!!!
One of the greatest songs ever written by one of the worlds greatest duo's which has that sheer power to stop you dead in your tracks and listen.I saw this 83 at the cinema which was a wow factor then, and who said pop stars cannot act, top WW2 film with a real deep humane factor matched with the greatest soundtrack ever written, sheer class, sheer brilliance, still makes me shiver and goosebump today.
David Sylvian - Forbidden Colours Lyrics The wounds on your hands Never seem to heal I thought all I needed was to believe Here am I, a lifetime away from You The blood of Christ or the beat of my heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes Senseless years thunder by Millions are willing to give their lives for You Does nothing live on? Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in You once again I'll go walking in circles While doubting the very ground beneath me Trying to show unquestioning faith in everything Here am I, a lifetime away from You The blood of Christ, or a change of heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in You once again
I told my mom about this when I was a freshman in college. It was her favorite as was David Bowie. The night she killed herself while overdosing she watched this and it played on a continuous wrap on her dvd player. It kills me almost to listen to it and watch it is even worse. 😿
So sorry about your mom. Same thing happened to me at 7. We’ll never know if it was an accidental overdose. I believe it was because she loved us so much.In the late 60’s, early 70’s doctors handed out prescriptions for Valium like it was candy. Mixed with alcohol was lethal. Blessings🙏🏼
@ss3cleric thank you for your words... très émouvant de voir qu'un film peut avoir le pouvoir d'ouvrir les esprits.... et que les hommes malgré des combats, des violences terribles, peuvent finir par se comprendre...
this piece still is one of the most amazing compositions ever made by anyone. even though i hadn't heard it in many many years, i still remembered every word, lilt in sylvian's vocal, and the sensitive piano of the amazing sakamoto. after 24 years, it still gives me goosebumps.
Does anyone else think the heavy handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone correction **heavy**
Sweet, elegant, strugglin'.. perfect song. And after all not so 'pop' in the arrangement though perfectly enjoyable with no skills. I covered this since a long ago.. great.
No. You may as well criticise the scene of Bowie portraying his characters life prior to his military service - as a senior school student. It was a movie, not a documentary.
I was out on DVD in 2004 by Optimum Cat number OPTD0065 with slipcase, digitally remasted from 33MM print, extras are a booklet with an interview with Nagisa Oshima, and on DVD interviews with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jeramy Thomas, The Oshima Gang a 30 mim makeing of Documentary with interview with Takashi Kitano and a trailer, you can find it on Ebay and Amazon for about £6/7 mine was £2.99 from Cash Generators LOL.
its about prisoners in a japanese war camp in world war 2 and there relationships with the camp guards one of whom is attracted to the main character played by david bowie it is a good film if you want to watch it dont read any synopsis because they will tell you the end and spoil it
this is the song played to a good friend gone over 20 years ago. killed himself. wild 80ties.!! lose a friend and u know they take a piece of u. this japan song i dedicate to those gone.
Does anyone else think the have handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone
I like the mix because the vocal and the music come closer together now, and the outro is really nice too:) A tribute with the genuine passion! Btw, guys, I don't think this gay fuss chat is still trendy:) It's the ART, nothing else matters.
It might not have been the highest salary, but that is because Bowie was in a period of his life where he needed and deserved to finally start making money in his life after being screwed over completely by his manager. I don't even think SRV harboured any bad feelings towards Bowie.(SRV = Stevie Ray Vaughn.)
I'm not a drug snob. I love tripp'n it helps me stay level when I do it every so often. Sylvian is much more personal for me than Bowie, and personally I think he's a much better singer and towers over Bowie as a song writer. Bowie can write hooks, but Sylvian writes uncompromising phylosophy from his soul in every song. Not many artists are that true to themselves. Though I'm sure Sylvian would never want to be compared to Bowie or vice versa. so like I said personal pref. Like what you like.
Rest in Peace Ryuichi Sakamoto. Thank you for your beautiful music💜💜💜Now together with David Bowie in Heaven.
This song touches the very essence of our humanity
RIP R. Sakamoto. You give to the world an extreme beauty in your musical compositions with a talent that is impossible to replace- You have changed the whole history of music , creating electronic music and heal sounds for the people. Eternal . You will be so missed.
Ryuichi, Sylvian & Bowie... is just a perfect combination...
and Takeshi Kitano!
This music is such a happy memory. I used to dance to this soundtrack throughout my great big sparse loft in SoHo w my Dalmatian Oliver long before all the over development in NYC. Thank you Ryuichi.
R.I.P. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO.
A nd thank you so much‼️

I think this so g is one of the most beautiful Sakamoto ever wrote. So sensitive and emotional. People are missing so much if they never hear it.

Me too. Yes, everyone should watch this movie. It is strangely beautiful, extremely moving and totally awesome (in the true sense of the word).
Made me shed tears at the end of the movie..

Rest in peace, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
This movie is in my top 10! And I don't really like war movies at that much. But this movie has much more of a psychological and human perspective to it. The way the director captured the characters' emotions is quite amazing!
it is amazing how certain music can evoke emotions even among the most jaded of us.
Magnifique, cette musisue me transporte depuis mon enfance ❤ Une pureté touchant l'âme.
Film was excellent , the music stunningly beautiful .
I saw this film when it first came out and it has remained indelibly imprinted on my memory. When it ended I didn't want to leave the theater. The music went on for some time and it was so beautiful.

"He" is young Ryuichi Sakamoto himself!

Another top song from a great film

I'm not the biggest fan of the singing, but the music is an orgy to my ears =D

Thanks for posting this. I haven't heard this version. It's different from the sound track one. An extremely emotive piece of music.
Best wishes.
Ken.
