Was a gold VIP membership at QBD worth my while?

  • QBD is a large book seller in Australia: Queensland Book Depo. I got a gold VIP membership for a year and this is some thoughts on it's worth to me.
I was very disappointed at how many on their back catalogue were not available when you tried to buy them: almost all the SFF I planed to buy was not in print. The 100 Must-Read Science Fiction Novel Paperback by Nick Andrews & Stephen E; Rennison, one of the books on their catalogue that I especially wanted, also not available.
This membership is suited to some readers, to me, less so.

I first noticed QBD when I returned to Melbourne in 2016 but haven’t shopped there in a while

Thanks for watching! Not sure I ever shopped with them when I lived in Melbourne; so many other options there. When I moved to the wilds of QLD it because a bit more relevant :)

We don’t have QBD here in the United States, I live on top of a snowy mountain hours away from any bookshops. I usually just order off eBay or Amazon, though sometimes I need to get the shipment at the mountain trailhead with my polar bear sled.

Yeah. QBD is very niche Australia - thank you for watching and commenting though.

I very much agree with you about Mark Lawrence. I didn’t like the 3rd book as much as the first two but to be fair the first two were incredibly interesting and well written.
Do you have/read Gibson’s screenplay for Alien 3? I picked it up, mostly because I was surprised at this combination, but haven’t read it yet.

Yes, I would agree that Emperor was not quite as tight, plot wise, as the first two Broken Empire, but it was a pretty satisfying conclusion in most ways.
I have not read Gibson's screenplay. I regretfully have to admit that I do not at all enjoy reading screenplays or plays in general. I have made occasional exceptions, but they are really not my thing.

@@OmnivorousReader I just happened to be at the bookstore one day and saw Aliens 3 and Gibson's name and decided I had to pick it up.

@ Aha, books found it the wild are the most satisfying. I look forward to the review when you read it.

We have QBD in Adelaide mostly in the big malls. They seem to me to be like a basic bookshop, for normies and casual readers, very mainstream and non-challenging. If you want something well known and popular they're fine. If you want something a bit out of the mainstream or rare they are useless.

Agreed! Up here they do have a decent selection of fantasy, manga ect, and their on line catalogue definitely led me astray. Thanks for watching and commenting!
