That means ether the Christian is God real or the pagan gods are real obivousily I believe in the Christian God. I believe in the Christian God solely because most God's in most methologies don't really get along and their usually is a lot of conflict and to me when pagan gods fight each other I would imagine you would notice. My belief in the Christian God stems from personal experience and from the fact that having more than one god will always how see it end in ruin

      If you take the trouble and read your Bible, you will quickly see how not only unreasonable it is to believe that this god is real, you will also see how incredibly immoral he is. If the Bible is true (don't worry, it can't be because of all the contradictions), then Yahweh is guilty of the most horrific crimes one can ever commit. Now if you look at the planet then you would see that the best understanding that we can come up to are fractals (algorithms) - fractals in fractals in fractals ad infinitum. Depends on whether or not the left hand was either forced or wanted to make that action separately from the right. Which is what they are demonstrating in the split mind example. In a mind that it's whole and sound, then the idea is that you as a "complete" person made the decision. Cognitive dissonance is something experienced in a normal brain almost daily, and the idea here is that people who have had their brain split, experience that dissonance separately instead of simultaneously to the point where it can be determined what each hemisphere "believes".

And they'll be satisfied with that as a resolution. OR, they'll accuse you of being the devil, who reveals his true identity by trying to cast doubt in a faithful individual. Honestly, if it was so hard for a theist to confront, then why didn't the theist hemisphere in the guy with the condition find a problem with its position?

      @MrEkitten 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Put super simply - left hemisphere controls the right side of your body and the right hemisphere controls the left side. So when the left hand points, it is the right hemisphere doing the pointing. In split-brain patients, you can isolate your "conversation" with the left hemisphere, by only accepting answers from the right side of the body. *Again this is a simplification, but it should get you the idea*

    • @MrEkitten
      @MrEkitten 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** "You will see or hear the question with both ears and both eyes anyways, so can you truly rule out that the one side is not influencing the other in anyway?"
      For people with a functioning intact corpus callosum you are correct. With "split-brain" patients though, each side learns on it's own without the knowledge of what the other side is learning. So "Does the right and left side also have a separate sub conscious?", Excellent question. Some say "Yes." And that is the point of the video. Which sub conscious does a religious person think is the correct one? Or does a second Soul inhabit the person when this happens to someone.
      "Most people are right-hand dominant which is actually controlled by the left side of the brain." - Yes, this statement is accurate.
      "So is the study really accurate going just by hand pointing?" - Absolutely. The reason is because we are talking about patients with a corpus callosum that is not intact. In fact, the results of these studies led to Roger Sperry being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1981. This is how much these studies had an impact in this field. It is truly amazing work.
      Some other key phrases to look up that you might interesting:
      "lateralization" - This is the term used when describing which side of the brain is better at certain functions
      "Diagonistic dyspraxia" - This is a version of Alien Hand Syndrome where one hand tries to interfere with what the other hand is trying to do. Example: One hand might be trying to take a drink of water and the other hand will try to swat the drink away.
      This field of study is still in its infancy. Not all the answers are in, and some current theories are sure to change and be proven wrong. But it sure raises a lot of questions.

      There are beliefs that are rational even if you have no material proof of them.
      For instance, all scientists in the world operate on the belief that the laws of physics are universal. Gravitational constant is the same in our galaxy and the next, right ?
      Well there is not a single element of proof that it holds true for the entire universe.
      Would you say that this belief is irrational ? Probably no (and neither do I), because it is a framing belief that not only does not clash with local experimental knowledge, but allows local knowledge. If we believed the laws of universe could be changed from one country to another, there would be no science because no experimental result could produce something useful in another setting.
      Same for Christian faith (don't know the others enough to comment). It is a framing belief for which you cannot demand a demonstration - but you still can demand rational arguments. Only, instead of getting arguments on how the christian faith can fit in a scientist model of the universe, you will get arguments as to how science fits in a theological model of the world.
      Btw., it is the same status for evolution (can't believe people are still fighting on this). It is *not* a scientific theory - especially it does not have falsifiability conditions -, however it is a perfectly rational proposal / model / paradigm within which we can develop local knowledge.

    • @JohnSmith-fz1ih

      "There are beliefs that are rational even if you have no material proof of them."
      I agree completely.
      "Btw., it is the same status for evolution (can't believe people are still fighting on this). It is not a scientific theory - especially it does not have falsifiability conditions..."
      This is incorrect. It is a scientific theory, it does have falsifiable conditions, and the understanding we have gained from it has enabled us to create an untold number of medicines.
      The theory of evolution says that very small changes happen, and over a very large number of generations they add up to significant changes including speciation. This means that the "crockoduck" (look it up if you haven't heard the term; it's hilarious) would actually disprove evolution if it were to exist.

    I found this video eight years after it was posted. What disturbs me is the current state of "conversation" in the United States. There are an infinite number of questions that the Religious Right has difficulty with, although to them they seem completely unaware of any difficulty with important questions. There are profound challenges that the Religious Right has with reason and logic, though they seem completely unaware of any need for reason and logic. That might be somewhat fine if their Religiosity stayed at Church and in their homes. The truly tragic part is that their Religious Zeal is now carrying over into the political arena and the future of the United States of America.

    It's clear all the religious people in the comments are adept at dodging hard questions. While the question of whether different halves of the brain produce different personalities in general require statistically significant test subjects, the philosophical consequences only require one: Will that one test subject go to both heaven and hell, or will he not? The consequences on this one person does not depend on any other.
    Nor do the consequences of your intellectual dishonesty at the feet of your God.

      @john cameron Ethics constitutes a cultural contract for people to coexist. How one is compelled to act is subjective even if there is a God. When an external actor orders a person to do something, such that the person is forced to act, then the person is absolved from the responsibility of that action. That is not morality, that is following orders. Morality requires internal understanding, the feeling of guilt or shame should something be wrong. If you feel shame at the thought of killing, then you should do it even if God did not order you not to kill. You cannot justify morality with God, because following orders not to kill or being coerced by the threat of eternal hell does not mean you internally think it is actually wrong. By defining wrongness through God, you absolve your responsibility, and necessitate your immorality. You create your own sin.

      Because each hemisphere controls one side of the body if you were to close your right
      eye your right side of the brain will be able to process what is being seen by
      your left eyeball (the eye that is only opened currently). A normal person’s
      brain would send the information to left side of the brain from the right side
      of brain via the Corpus callosum but because a split brain patient has the
      Corpus callosum separated the 2 hemispheres cannot communicate. Essentially the
      patient would have one eye covered and that would allow one half of the brain
      to work while the other has no clue what is going on.

      LV-426 Devasher I disagree. People go from being non-religious to religious all the time. From Christian to Buddhist. It usually takes a catalyst like a discussion with someone or an event in their life, but sometimes finding your religion is a life long journey. I would say that that person developed faith in a greater power. Religion is not something that requires facts because it operates on faith. The main problem with religion, namely Christianity and Islam, is that they are trying to force others to have faith in their God. Not all believers, but an overwhelming amount operate solely on "there is my god and everyone else is wrong".

    The origins of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind is book by Julian Jaynes. In essence the question of a two distinct consciousness in each hemisphere leads to the question how and what does the mute right hemisphere communicate with the left. The hypothesis proposes that literacy enforces a cognitive tradeoff that limits the capabilities of the interface between both hemispheres. Similar to cognitive tradeoffs in the development of language between quadrupedal and bipedal primates. An illiterate brain would represent concepts and words in images rather than images of alphabetical and grammatical syntax. Such a person may be able to access a visually intuitive perception that is difficult for a literate person may achieve. This may apply to multiple stages of the brainwave cycle. Cultures that used entheogens could have honed these capabilities even further. With this in mind the question is how would this have influenced the stories that were told around the fireplace. It could explain the origin of early proto religious philosophy. In essence the mute right hemisphere is the voice of the God/spirit/devil co-processor an extended visual intuition.
    Perhaps there is a layer of reality that is not readily accessible for modern domesticated and literate homosapiens due to suppressed bicameral facilities.
    This particular video is fascinating in particular because the right hemisphere believes ( albeit humerously ) itself to be feminine even though the split brain patient is a man.
    Allowing some creative license in further interpretation maybe the right hemisphere and the left hand side is indeed the feminine side of the body. The right hand is usually the dominant hand. The liver is on the right. The heart straddles the middle but lies mostly on the left. The stomach is squarely on the left. This is particularly interesting not merely because of the symbolism of nurture. But because lying on your right leads to reflux as digestive juices roll down the oesophagus from the elevated stomach. The observant will notice lying on your left is generally more comfortable. So mankind has evolved such that spooning works best if the man lies on the right and the woman on the left.

      Buddhism has its own hang ups. Some believe in reincarnation that is incompatable with the science of today, i guess because it was first thought about over 2000 years ago, when it couldnt be argued against.

    • @techcheck5019
      @techcheck5019 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually science doesn't say anything about reincarnation, if you think science knows what happens when you die then you are very ignorant. No scientist has ever claimed they know anything beyond what they know of this world.
      These people on your TV are not real scientists, they are people that got a degree to become a political talking head for atheism and try to use their degree as if it legitimizes what they are saying (When what they are saying is totally different from what their supposed field says).
      I am sorry to tell you, but science can answer everything of this world. But it can't answer anything beyond your life, and it never will be able to.
      If you truly believe you suddenly were born and exist from absolutely nothing and this is the first time you have ever existed in any fashion and you will die and go back to non existence forever then fine. But at least understand that is your belief, that isn't a fact.

      Wait, this isn't even correct, about 60% of the left eye send information to the right hemisphere and vise versa. Basically everything you see from the middle to the left field-view is connected to the right hemisphere and everything from the middle to the right field-view is connected to the left hemisphere (in general with exceptions as it is in most cases of science).

    I think this is a cool experiment that brings confirmation of the way we use our imagination, logic, reason and such. We all have the split brain but the majority is mingled and intertwined. This is why when the light has come in the darkness can't stand it. This is why when the TRUTH had come to its own it was unrecognized. This is the battle of the sermon on the Mount, the deny yourself, the pride vrs. the humble, the obedient vrs. disobedient, flesh vrs. SPIRIT. Two (flesh) hemispheres becoming one SPIRIT.
    Good observation. Need more studying. Did the guy think he was transgender with a laugh or was he just joking with the Dr.???

    I think it is quite easy to say yes, they would, assuming they are both still the same person (which they clearly are). The distinction between left and right brain is that left is the logical and rational side and the right is artistic. In other words, the left taps into a more vulgar truth which can clearly and distinctly be broken down into single, indivisible atoms where as the right deals in manners which at this time aren't nearly so easy to break down, or a higher truth than the vulgar, which would explain its appeal to most people prefer reading Hemingway as opposed to Russell. Art and Science are both correct in their own way, but the art isn't correct because you can't break it down into indivisable clearly identifiable axioms (although one could note that there are proofs for god using this manner), art is effective because it appeals to a meta truth and effective art is an amalgamation and abstraction of both physical and immaterial reality beyond what is merely vulgar.
    In addition, it's an appeal to belief. The left cannot believe, it knows. The right can only believe, not know, based on their functionality.
