    you all can nitpick all you want but its a "bang bang" play she saw the ump calling the batter out which froze likely her for a moment, yes she took one in the face, stuff happens, but I have zero doubt she was ready to be right back out there in the circle the next day. anyone that doesn't think these girls are tough doesn't know women's softball.

    All softball pitchers should wear a mask. Softball ain't so soft. It still beats you up to get hit by a ball in the face but it reduces damage from face reconstruction to two black eyes and a concussion.

      I once read that the only thing soft about softball is the larger bruises ad compared to baseball.
      And that's way rough. Baseball pitchers regularly have a hard time ducking in time from 60 feet away so I can only imagine how much more difficult that is to do with 20 fewer feet to work with.

    Normally in this scenario the catcher would just throw to 1st to get the batter out since the lead runner is obviously going to be difficult to get out on a sac bunt. My assumption is that the pitcher thinks that the catcher is going to 1st as usual, but the ump at home calls the batter out instantly for being out of the box. The catcher, already gearing up to throw to 1st, makes a mid-throw decision to go to 2nd and try to get the lead runner, which catches the pitcher off-guard.

      Or she’s absolutely aware that the batter is out and thinking her catcher knew the same piece of information considering she’s a foot away from the umpire. • @tomodonovan5931
      @tomodonovan5931 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I'm sure they are taught to duck in certain cases like stolen bases, and sacrifices.
      I noticed the catcher trying for the more difficult play to 2nd base. The sure out would have
      been to first. That's the whole point of sacrificing the runner into scoring position. That mental
      lapse can also be shared by the catcher. The sure out at first base just leaves one potential run
      at 2nd base. Now you have two runners on base with the chance of putting runs on the scoreboard.
      What if the catcher throws the ball past the 2nd baseman? The runner is now standing on 3rd base,
      and the batter probably would be standing on 2nd. Very, very costly in baseball, or softball. Always
      take the sure out. Any coach, or fan would say that. Maybe that is the reason the pitcher didn't duck
      out of the way. She thought the catcher would make the more routine throw to first, and I'm sure they
      have both agreed to discuss strategy for the future, to ensure this never happens again. You brought
      a good observation into play here.

      @@marksprague99 No worries. I saw that's what transpired. The batter was called out,
      and the reaction of the catcher was to go and try for a double play at 2nd, which is why
      the pitcher got beaned. She had that deer in the headlights effect. Pitchers should always
      duck on throws by the catcher to 2nd base. She probably was confused by the ump calling
      the batter out. But now the question is, was the runner at 2nd returned to 1st base since the
      batter was called out for stepping out of the batter's box? You would think so, since it was a
      dead ball situation. ie: batter being out of the batter's box. How would they have scored it?
      I don't know women's softball rules that well. It should be the same as any league be it
      baseball, or softball. I responded to Mike's comment w/o focusing totally on the play,
      and watched it twice more to get it right. I'm betting the farm that the runner was returned
      to 1st since there was no initial contact with the ball, since the batter was called out. Would
      you agree, or do you think the runner stays at 2nd base? Thanks!, and thanks for correcting

    The ump called the batter for being out of the box when contacting the ball. Well... he was WRONG, the foot must be COMPLETELY OUT, if it touches any part of the line, the foot is considered IN the box.

    Coming from a baseball player....WHY WAS SHE JUST STANDING THERE??? 0 IQ play but I obviously wasn’t happy to see her get nailed. I actually thought this was fake at first because of how dumb it looked. It hit her square in the face. When the ball is in play( especially with a small softball field ) you have to know better and duck. 0 communication and overall terrible play

      @ JG tO - As a ballplayer, do you think the 'rule' about the batter's box applies when part of you is still "inside" the box? I have heard a number of conflicting views on that.

    • @skrt_chabb9270
      @skrt_chabb9270 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That definitely was not the catchers fault. In reality it was bad place bad time but if anything it was the pitcher fault. The catcher knew the runner was going and she made a “clean” throw to second the pitcher was just in the way. The throw would have been accurate. Yes the batter was called out but with such a short bunt there was not enough time for the catcher to realize - she already has it in her head she’s going 2 if she gets the ball.

    • @gonzarellious6102
      @gonzarellious6102 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skrt_chabb9270 It sure as hell was the dumb ass catcher's fault. Why in the hell would you not throw to first? Or hell, why not throw literally anywhere other than directly at her face? I mean, that's just absolutely dumb as hell, or it's intentional. I'm leaning toward intentional.

    • @tomodonovan5931
      @tomodonovan5931 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gonzarellious6102 I don't think Skrt_Chabb ever played infield on a baseball team. You're right.
      You get the sure out at 1st. Anyone who plays baseball should know that. No way would that
      throw to 2nd would have arrived before the runner. She was at least within 20 feet of the bag
      at 2nd base when that catcher was releasing her throw. Johnny Bench would not have made
      that play. Those women can run fast on those base paths. The pitcher probably thought the
      catcher would make the routine play at first, but remember, the batter was called out for
      being out of the box, so maybe the catcher knew this fact, and tried for the double play at 2nd.
      I'm not quite sure of the rules for woman's softball. They may have returned the runner at 2nd
      back to 1st base, while calling the batter out for being out of the box. If you find out, please let
      me know.
