Same here. This is exactly what I wanted and needed. The only concern is that if you dont have a secondary backup in some way if you lose the device - eventually that single disk is going to fail and then what ?
I wish i knew about this before i spent the money i did. I dont really know how to use my NSA. I don't have time to invest in learning. I probably just wanted a Bee Station
This would be useful for my family to use for primary photo, pc backup. I can then use my DS920+ for surveillance station and a geographically isolation backup to Bee. To confirm Hyperbackup can be programmed to backup Bee to DS920+?
Wish I would seen this last week when I started to set up my first Synology NAS. Have had nothing but problems and hours and hours of troubleshooting. For a user like me this looks like what I really needed but with $500 invested in a NAS I guess it’s too late. DAM!
Sorry to hear that. It can be a fun hobby but it really is that, a time consuming hobby. Synology hardware holds its value pretty well so it might not be a bad idea to consider selling and purchasing this instead.
I have a larger Synology NAS that I don’t want tied to my Plex account. I’m looking for a secondary, budget-friendly NAS to act as a Plex media server for family photos, videos, and a small subset of my MP4 library (around 3-4TB max). It would need to work seamlessly with the Plex app on a Google TV streamer so my wife can access content easily. I’d transfer additional files to this secondary NAS from my main NAS as needed. I guess the answer depends on whether the Google TV streamer can do video transcoding but generally speaking, is the Synology BeeStation a good option for this?
Thanks for this review. I have a few questions I am wondering if you could help me with (I found the manual for Beestation really vague and could not figure this out): Can a Mac user setup multiple MacBooks to do time machines (more than one laptop) via SMB with Beestation? And is it possible to create additional shared folders and access them via SMB with Beestation?
Yeah, I think the thought here is the files live on your phone/device and are backed up to this box. Then if you wipe your phone, etc, you can easily restore. And, if the drive dies, you typically would still have the data on your phone/device. For most home users this is likely fine, but yes I agree, I don't think we are the target market here.
RAID is NOT a backup. RAID is used to make sure that a business does not have an outage due to hardware failure. An actual backup is sticking an external hard drive on this thing and having it run hyperbackup
I’m really torn whether I should get this or a DS224+ for my parents. They would have zero intention of learning about the ins-and-out of the NAS software so the simplicity factor is meaningless. I almost feel a DS224+ is the far better option so I can setup SHR and a VPN server to remotely fix anything that needs it.
I am probably your parent’s age and somewhat technically experienced. Bought a DS223j 4 days ago. Save your parents the frustration. A SSD and cloud service would be easiest, seems like beestaion might also be easy but I hate buying first generation products.
Wouldn't the Media folder be intended to hold the other two conspicuous categories which seem to be absent -- music and video? Not sure why they would think the average person is only interested in photos and general-purpose files. Aren't video/audio/image (or photo/video/music) the three categories supported by dlna?
so you can do a photo shoot and put them on this bee station and be able to share those photos with clients straight from the bee station still in raw format so they can do the edits themselves?

With the demise of the Apple Time Capsules a few years ago, that left a number of my friends and family without automatic time machine backups of their Macs. I told them to get a small external drive and plug it in every day or week to do a back up, but most people don't do it. So to me, this seems like it would be a great Time Capsule replacement if it can be easily set up to do Time Machine backups. It would be worth it just for that. When you spoke briefly about the SMB section you kind of breezed by the fact that it is set up to do Time Machine if this is enabled. Can you please do a quick tutorial on how to set one of these up to act solely as a Time Machine back up? I think you would be doing many of us a service in doing that. Thanks!

I was thinking about getting a 2 bay NAS such as the Synology DS224+ but then came across your posting of the Bee Station. Surely this is the same as just having a 4 TB external HDD or am I wrong in that assumption?
Well no, it's not a passive storage unit, it's a server with its own processor and operating system. It's an always-on network device that allows remote access and sync from multiple devices. You can't do that with an external HDD if you turn off the computer it's attached to.

So simple and especially for users that don't know anything about NASs, one day they woke up with the Bee Station hard drive dead and will ask where is my files? is simple, they are gone.
It is misleading for Synology to market this device as a replacement for cloud storage. A cloud subscription typically includes backups; without a Synology C2 subscription plan, you only have the BeeStation with its built-in hard drive and whatever device you choose to keep the originals on.
The device is above all an easy way to lose your data. However, this is not just a problem with this device, but with all NAS devices in general. With the more professional devices, it is actually assumed that the user installs a UPS themselves. But with this simple device, the rather inexperienced user is guaranteed not to do anything like that. And even if he does, I don't see an option here that would shut down the BeeStation in the event of a power outage if the UPS battery runs out at some point. This means that the data is on a hard drive that is constantly active and is not connected to a fail-safe power supply. In the event of a power failure or accidental unplugging, the hard drive can always be damaged. Any laptop that has an external hard drive connected to it is much, much safer in this regard. Synology should have installed a small battery here that would at least ensure a safe shutdown in the event of a power failure.
This power loss issue normally comes from the RAID5 write whole, which in this case is not possible due to it being only a single drive. So your COW BTRFS should pretty much protect you from anything power loss wise
@@SpaceRexWill As far as I know, it's not just RAID 5 that is affected by so-called write holes. Sure, a single drive is not a RAID, but I'm not sure if COW is enough to ensure data integrity in all cases. And to be honest, I find it totally incomprehensible that almost every electronic device, no matter how small, now has a battery, except a NAS.

A bit too repetitive and long, and till now I didn’t see phone interface of synchronization. A question the pixel photo were intentional or just bad CPU?
I don't like this product, its hardware is too outdated. I know this is made to bee (pun intended) the simplest but paying like 1000zł (around 300 dollars) in my country for two apps, 1gb of ram and a fucking celeron is a laughing stock.
I don't understand why this device gets so many good words. I'm afraid Synology doesn't see what happened with WD and online access to their devices. Is this what awaits BeeStation users? YES! Maybe not today or tomorrow. But a ddos or other attack is only a matter of time. It is more than certain that this will happen and you will not get access to your data. And enabling access via LAN, which is available as an option, is BAD!

@@marshallgoldberg8376 I already replied to your comment why was it deleted, it's not stealing when the firmware is openly available on their site for download. However I only use TrueNAS you should check that OS out.
The first 8 minutes of this video are just belaboring the points.
The best thing about it probably the software.
This device is hopeless, it works very slowly, it copies photos at a very low speed, after two days of not using it, I need a few minutes to preview the photos. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT, WASTE OF TIME, NERVES AND MONEY.
stop listening to TH-cam scammers.
Online account for local storage? lol
A bit too repetitive and long, and till now I didn’t see phone interface of synchronization.
A question the pixel photo were intentional or just bad CPU?
1 hard drive fail and boom! 😅
$220 + Tax
I don't like this product, its hardware is too outdated. There is only one hard disk, how can I recover my data if the hard disk breaks down? The BeeFiles UI interface is very advanced, the Synology Drive interface is too old, Synology doesn't pay attention to give users an excellent interface design experience.🙄
I know this is made to bee (pun intended) the simplest but paying like 1000zł (around 300 dollars) in my country for two apps, 1gb of ram and a fucking celeron is a laughing stock.
It's annoying to watch him read what he is going to announce
I don't understand why this device gets so many good words. I'm afraid Synology doesn't see what happened with WD and online access to their devices. Is this what awaits BeeStation users? YES! Maybe not today or tomorrow. But a ddos or other attack is only a matter of time. It is more than certain that this will happen and you will not get access to your data. And enabling access via LAN, which is available as an option, is BAD!
First to comment ;-)
Waste of time
Could you cut your hair, I can't focus watching video.
So basically an overpriced external hard drive.
So allowed change up to 8tb hdd storage?
