I’m a retired Officer in the U.S., most of my time was on Motors but my last several years were in K9. My partner and I retired in 2021. About 1 year later he developed degenerative myelopathy (back legs) and I had to put him to sleep. I know I actually still grieve. I understand the pain you have. He was a Belgian Malinois, made it to 14 years. God bless.
Many thanks for posting. My wife and I are coming to terms with it, slowly. Have her ashes with us. My 12 year old GSD last week had his testicles removed as one was very large , possible tumour, so both taken out. Poor boy can only have 10 minutes walk a day for 10 days...hopefully it will be non cancerous and we will get him to 14...thats the plan! Have a great day 😁
Thank you for uploading this. It’s very helpful. I know how heartbreaking this must have been for you both; being completely unexpected. My best wishes to you and your wife.
Thanks for being so open at such a tough time. “Part of the family,” they are indeed. Just look at Milo with you now, relaxed, because you are. Milo and Kiera playing with your cat is quite the picture. She’ll be missed in the ‘cave’ by us viewers.
As a fellow German Shepherd lover and owner you have my upmost sympathy for your loss, my GS has a common disease called Degenerative Myelopathy which you will probably be aware of, although she's has developed this debilitating condition we have been able to support her with the use of walk in wheels in order to give her some kind of independence in her latter years and is coping well, once again I am very sorry to hear about your what was a a loving member of your family and wish your other GS good health for years to come.
My sincere condolences and deepest sympathy Paul my friend as lost 3 yes 3 in 6 weeks it’s absolutely heartbreaking wish you all the very very best Paul , there are meadows and hills for all our special friends over the Rainbow bridge 🌈🐾🐾
So sorry for your loss. As I said while on your trip .but very brave of you to let people know about DCM and to explain it so clearly. The loss of a companion is always hard. But as a ex Dog handler and Trainer of GSDS I know they are blazey about the loss their fellow canine. It will take time for you and your wife to come to terms with your loss. Just give yourselves time . Regards Andy
So sorry for your loss mate. We lost our American akita Luna she was 10 and suddenly died 3 months ago 11:35 She also slowed down on walks about a week before. So maybe that was what it was. Devastated 💔 Thanks for your video. Made me cry 😢
So so sad, thank you for sharing this. I'd never heard of DCM before, I have a virtually identical GSD to yours - Bayley, 7 years, & very large. I will now get him checked out. You must be heartbroken
Thanks for the heads up on this little known condition and so sorry to hear of your loss. We too have lost a couple of Labs over the years due to deteriorating heath, still have two which are firmly embedded members of the family, and they know it. Thanks again, that was a tough watch, best wishes
Many thanks, it's the first dog that I have lost. 😢 But Milo doesn't seem bothered! We have allowed him into the bedroom to sleep now he's on his own....he quite likes being by the side of the bed.
absolutely gutted for you! lost one of my dogs last year and the other had a seizure the other day found out he has a tumour. they are part of you family thoughts go out to you!
So sorry to see this, we have a Shelties which is starting to have kidney failure and is only just 4 years old. Currently on antibiotics to help with a urine infection and having a scan next week to see what our options are, we noticed she was off her food and took her to the vets, we are devastated.
I know that pain unfortunately.. my thoughts are with you all. Thanks for sharing your information , it must have been hard , but may help others. Mike
This must have been a very hard video to make.. hoping it helps other dogs and yes you don't know just how it affects you until you suffer the loss. We lost our Bearded Collie to pneumonia at 5 years old and like you i was traveling at the time. it devastated my wife and i and took us 18 months before we realised we could not go on without a dog in our lives .. happy we got our self another Beardie and we love her very much.. We thinking about our first every day, but time is a good healer ... keep up the good work!
Heart breaking, we lost our 2 Cairn terriers to cancer, it really is devastating, 18 months later we have a Cockapoo, and she is fantastic. It will take time, but you'll both get there.
Courage to you in this special moment. I am really sorry for the loss of your dog...A big thank you for your prevention video which I will hasten to relay to my friends who have one or more dogs. Kind regards. ✌du Nord de la France
My wife and I have said goodbye to seven dogs over the years (three English Setters and four English Springer Spaniels) and it never becomes any easier. It was very brave of you to make this video, and I was pleased you used the term put to sleep rather than put down which I find repugnant! You still have your other lovely German Shepherd which helps a lot at times like this.
RIP Keira, it's hard loosing any pet, but a dog is part of the family, we have lost a few over the years, our last GSD was also a Keira, beautiful dog, my current GSD Mira, is a moron, but every bit as loveable, thank you for the video and heads up, much appreciated.
Such a sad loss and very upsetting. DCM took our black lab Sonny, in 2010. He went within 3 days of him showing any symptoms at the age of 10. Two weeks ago, we lost our black lab Heidi to it as well. She was 12.5. She slowed down and lost her appetite over a two week period, and eventually lost all energy, and we had to make the very painful decision, to let her go peacefully. Its still hard to go out walking without her 🐾❤
Can’t watch my thoughts are with you ( I lost my chech wolfdog Loup) its an absolute life changer but the pain dulls or at least the moments between the pain get longer & the joys in life begin to make an appearance again. I did get a pup GSD and she has helped its hard to be sad when those needle sharp teeth are chasing you and the joy of a puppy’s life definitely helped
In 2006 I adopted a couple of Greyhounds, my first ever dogs. When I had to let the first one go it was unbelievably painful and I thought it must be easier when the inevitable has to come round again. For me it wasn't, it was incredibly hard. I decided to not own dogs again as the pain was too much, so I understand what you are going through. 😞
My beautiful long coated German shepherd passed away a few years ago. What upset me the most is that I was away from home and could not comfort or help him in his last moments. The strange thing is I had a feeling that something was wrong with him whilst I was out. At the time I had two properties and my GSD, named Cully after my best friend at school, he lived at my other property as it had a huge garden and he was a great guard dog, keeping the property safe whilst I was renovating it. On return my first thing was to go to my other house and see him. Unfortunately I was too late and my faithful dog was lying dead on the lawn. The vet said that he had suffered a heart attack, he was nearly 12 years old and had lived a good life. I have kept his collar and I have his ashes in my front room. I won’t get another dog even though I have been around (and owned) GSD’s all my life, it’s just too upsetting when then pass away. I initially found your channel due to its motorcycle content (I’m a Honda Goldwing man myself) but the inclusion of your GSD’s was the icing on the cake. So very sorry to here that one of your dogs had passed away. All the best for the future.
It's just crap we are on our 4th Lab in 35 years two off which went at 7 and 9 both with tumours , we know how you feel. The irony of this is you had heart problems also and where close to the departure lounge ( excuse the pun).Having worked with Shepard's (landsharks) and labs in my job way back they are super intelligent dogs. Regards Robert .
Unless you have lost a dog you dont understand. Its gutting. Thanks for the video mate.
Very true
Totally gutting . RIP Keira. You are the best! 💔

Thanks, the cats came along 2 years ago and were rescue cats from france and they get on like a house on fire .
Amazing. A life of travel and expat life has meant no pets for us - yet. But my GS reg is D.WFR, so maybe we do 👍
I’m very sorry to hear about your beloved Keira passing. Thanks for making the video to help us all to be aware of DCM.
Thank you . Life marches on and time makes it all a little bit less painful . 😢
That is sad news 😔. So sorry for the loss of your beautiful Keira. I cant bear to think about when that day comes for mine. They really are family 💙
I am not a dog person. But as a lover of cats, I feel your pain. A few tears have been shed when I lost my cats. My best wishes to you and your wife.
Thanks . We love cats too and have lost 3 over the years and that was bad enough !

We are so very sorry to hear about your Keira😢 we have our 4th Boxer and each loss devastated us. Hug to you all and hope Milo adjusts well.
