  • While the Roman army of the Republican period was often on the move and lived in camps, the Imperial army started to be stationed in forts around the empire. The soldiers, therefore, started to live in one place in barracks. In this episode, we are going to look at an infantry barrack block and what it would be like for the soldiers living there.

I hope they keep sending me my recruiters bonus. They've been late with the payments lately!

Wonderful video! I recently began to become invested in Roman History and have begun reading a book on the subject. It's awesome to be able to witness the material culture in the real world!

@@AlexIlesUK Honestly I'm fascinated by all of Roman History, Western as well as Easter. The book I'm currently reading is SPQR by Mary Beard which is more of a general overview from the founding of the city to 212 CE. I'm hoping it'll introduce me to specific areas to research more thoroughly, and I'm considering writing a historical fiction/fantasy set in Imperial Rome, likely the second century. If I lived in a place with a living history/reenactment community and wasn't a broke college student I'd probably pursue that too.

Then I would definitely suggest finishing that book and it will give you ideas. I would read a lot before you start writing anything there's a lot of very dedicated people within the field and it will give you the most success if you're well-based within the subject. Also for reenactment there are many roles of in society and you don't have to just have a military one. In fact, if you have a good soft kit (clothing) you can present a very good civilian impression that isn't too expensive.

@@AlexIlesUK I absolutely intend to read more if I pursue that project, and thanks for the advice!

Good day Alex, I'm not a tech savy so I can't give you the solution, but have you noticed the screen tearing in some of your videos (also in this one). At 00:30 it starts at the bottom left side , going to the right. Edit: at around 00:39 you can see the tearing maintained on the path. It must have to do something with frame rates, refresh rates and lighting because it starts again when you exit the barack (07:36), to YOUR left after passing a certain distance from the shadow of the roof.
Thank you for teaching us about the daily life of roman soldiers.

I will have a good look - it may be a issue with the upload to TH-cam as it's not there when I edit it. The issue may not be resolved for this series but I'll do what I can. Thanks for pointing it out.
