    Good morning Marci🤗
    Very informative, I always look at those book sales and it is frustrating when they don't provided information about what you are buying. I have one Edith Holden book and I am keeping in my collection for now. Thanks for the video, hope you have a fab day. 💕

    Please show us the pictures/list the EH fan chose to use and not use. I am 77 year old but back when I was elementary school, we used to use Clorox or hydroxide peroxide to erase ink errors in our writing. It may have been diluted but because my mother prepared it for me, I do not know. Maybe that would work for you in removing the names from your date book. I really appreciate your comments and flip throughs. My only note is that you didn't show the tops of most of the pages in the recipe book. You showed the lower 3/4 of most pages.

    • @CreatorsCall
      @CreatorsCall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so sorry the flip-through of some books was a little out of frame. The images on the Cookery Notes pages were primarily placed toward the bottom of each page. On the pages where the corners were decorated, the design was repeated in all 4 corners. The same was true of the Nature Notes book with the similar design. Hopefully that is helpful.
      I've added the video by Tatty Treasure to the description box. In it Tanya shows how she chooses which pages she wants to use as journal spreads and which images she cuts up. Hopefully you find that video useful as well. I plan to do a video down the line where I use Tanya's video as a guideline when I deconstruct my books. There is simply so much loveliness in Edith's artwork that I am still holding back a little bit from using them. Also, my schedule has been too busy to start a big project just yet. ☺
      Thanks for your valuable feedback, Barbara, and also for the handy tip on removing ink. I'll have to test it out. I imagine your mom did dilute the solution you used, so I will too. I appreciate your watching and your helpful comments. 💖

      Yes, my brothers used to collect those water skippers too. It's fascinating, the way they glide along the top of the water, leaving the tiny indentations where their feet rest. But I think this book was referring to some type of moth or butterfly. I suppose I could Google it...

Like you, I never see her books in thrift stores. In Canada they seem to find them in thrift stores everywhere. Perhaps because she was British and they're still a colony...part of the Commonwealth basically. I'm sitting here getting ready for hurricane Nicole. She'll hit us sometime in the early hours of Thursday morning. She's moving fast so hopefully she'll be out of here by Friday. I always pray I keep power. I've finally managed to get a copy of Edith Holden. My bookshop, run by the Red Cross, drives me crazy. They say they get loads of Edith being donated but they all go in the bin. They think they don't have value. They bin so many donated books! And they won't let you get books out of the rubbish. They absolutely refuse to sell them!

    • @CreatorsCall
      @CreatorsCall  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's infuriating! I'm glad you were able to find a copy for yourself. I think you also commented once that they toss the Readers Digest books too. You would think they would be happy to sell a few if it meant extra sales for the charity, especially since you are asking for them. Personally, I wouldn't be above a little dumpster diving... but, by no means should you infer that I am recommending YOU do it. 😉

    I'm so confused and upset. WHY on Earth would anyone cut these beautiful books up?? Can't the illustrations simply be photocopied? I have loved these books my whole life and I nearly have the entire collection now. I am collecting them to preserve them, because they not only have significant historic value but they also hold so much incredible information on our natural world. There are even some extinct species of plants and animals that now live only within the pages of Ms. Holden's incredible body of work. And they aren't being printed anymore! As a writer, collector, and booklover, watching a perfectly good book being chopped up is like watching a massacre. After realizing how many people are doing this, I'm inspired to purchase every copy of these that I come across for no other reason than to simply protect and preserve these literary treasures. I understand that people want to make journals, but there has to be a way to do it without destroying a book that was in perfectly good condition.

    • @CreatorsCall
      @CreatorsCall  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I buy books that are not in good condition or are on their way to the trash to use for journal making. When I first ordered these books, I couldn't bear to part with them and so I have copies of both of Edith's books as well as the Herb Garden book in my personal collection. As far as using the beautiful pages in journals, I choose books that are not in good condition so that my conscience is appeased. Also, you have to understand how many books wind up in the landfill because no one wants them. A large percentage of all the things you see in thrift stores ultimately gets sent to the trash. A sad but true fact. To take an unwanted book and turn it into a treasure, to give it new life and purpose, is the best way to honor a book, in my opinion.
      I've had my EH books for several years. I couldn't bear to take them apart at first and kept them to appreciate them. However, I'm now at the point that I can feel good about using them to make pages and lovely ephemera for journals. That is the reason I purchased these books in the first place. Now I can let them go and feel good about creating something beautiful with them. I can both appreciate a beautiful book and still feel fine about making art with the lovely pages.
      Illustrations can be photocopied and used ONLY IF the journal is not being sold. I've heard some crafters say that they use copies of the images in the journals they make for themselves. I make journals to sell so I cannot copy pages as it is a violation of copyright. I've heard rumors that Edith's great-niece is trying to get the books reissued. We will see. I think the market was flooded when they were first published. At the time I bought my first 2 books, they were only $5.00 or so. These were not books that were considered valuable because they were so common. We are aware of these lovely books only because a crafter somewhere found a copy and used the lovely illustrations, sharing it on her channel. It caught the attention of some more crafters who shared it, and so on. Then the book sellers caught on that crafters wanted these books and so the prices were jacked up to anywhere from $50-80 apiece! There are still lots of these books in the UK, Canada and other British affiliated countries, just maybe not as common in the U.S. I've had several people comment that their local libraries and thrift stores are throwing these books away, not allowing anyone the opportunity to buy/rescue them. That is FAR more disturbing to me!
      That being said, I will forever keep a copy of these lovely books on my personal shelf to treasure always. I think if you read through the comments on many of the EH videos you will find that many of us journal makers have an extra copy of an EH book tucked away somewhere just to admire. Thanks for watching and for your insightful comments, Madeline. I sincerely hope you return to watch more of my videos and read this reply. 💖

      @@CreatorsCall - Actually that makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. As you can tell, I'm passionate about books and history, which can sometimes get the best of me. And I am not too proud to admit when I've made a mistake or misjudged a situation. The original "Diary" was very much responsible for the making of me, found in a dusty corner of the school library when, as an awkward 7th grader, the books and the librarian were my only friends. I guess that's why it means so much to me. Where I live they are definitely difficult to come by and the prices can be absolutely insane. (I recently saw a copy of Nature Notes online that was nearly $100!) Please forgive a passionate bibliophile for jumping the gun in defense of my beloved bookie friends and thank you for being patient when I was being less than kind.

      No worries, I completely understand, Madeline. I felt that way too when I first saw these gorgeous books being used in journals. As a fellow bibliophile I enjoy being able to take unwanted discarded books and make something lovely out of them. I hate to see books going in the trash.
      Yes, the prices have gotten outlandish, although they seem to be coming down (a little bit) recently. I have never found any of the EH books "out in the wild". I would probably dance a jig and do cartwheels if I did! I've had to purchase all of mine online. I'm glad you have a collection going that you didn't pay a fortune for. I continuously tell my viewers not to fork over outrageous prices for these or any books/craft supplies. We have the power to affect prices by choosing where to spend our hard earned dollars. What a lovely discovery in your school library! I hadn't seen any of Edith's work until I saw it here on YT. I hope that lovely book was your first EH acquisition. From one awkward 7th grader to another.... 💖
      P.S. If you would like another equally lovely book to treasure, look for "A Victorian Flower Album" by Henry Terry (if you don't already own a copy). That's another one I ordered, then kept for my own bookshelf. I think you'll love it too. 🤗

      @@CreatorsCall - We have more in common than I thought! Lol. Yes, the original diary was my first EH book purchase. I had waited on one of those "instant alerts" from Thriftbooks for just over a year when I finally got the long-awaited "ding!" that absolutely made my decade. I'd been trying to find a hardback first edition in good shape for 30 years. I first fell in love with it back around 1992, long before the internet and other easy ways of acquiring specific books.
      For many years I had no idea that there were further volumes! I currently have the original diary, Cookery Notes, Book of Flowers, Herbal, Creating a Butterfly Garden, Creating a Wildflower Garden, Decorating: English Country Style, and the Book of Crafts.
      I don't have the Victorian album that you mentioned, but I do have "The Country Flowers of a Victorian Lady" by Fanny Robinson and a whole other collection of the Flower Fairies books by Mary Cicely Barker. I also highly recommend "A Sampler of Wayside Herbs" by Barbara Pond.
      I'm so glad that I found your channel, albeit with a bit of a rocky start. 🤭Thank you for welcoming a fellow riotous bibliophile. 😂
