    Just did my truck today with the Meguires kit. It did an awsome job. I don't know how it could have been more effortless. If Mother's is somehow better, cudos to them, but the Meguires works great. My kit came with three bars by the way.

    Sounds like the mother’s clay is more “aggressive” than the meguiar’s clay. This can be good and bad, good because it picks up the contaminants quicker, but a clay bar that’s more aggressive generally leaves a haze on the clear easier, where as the meguiar’s isn’t as aggressive, this is better because it will lift bonded contaminants and you won’t have to worry about any haze, you won’t need to polish out the paint. On paint that you just want to clay and wax, I think the meguiar’s is the better choice since it has a lower chance of marring the clear. I’ve used the meguiar’s consumer clay, it works good, I don’t see a problem with it, picks up contaminants just like the clay magic blue clay bar. Also, if a clay bar is grabby on the surface, then that means that the surface has a lot of contamination in that area and the clay is doing its job, or you simply need to add more lubricant to the surface.

    I often work in cold weather and the few times I've had to use the Meguiars clay, I've always hit it a little with a heat gun before kneading it, and after every panel or two. Much easier to work with, and brings some sticky out of it. 😀

    Thank you Scott. As an amateur detailer I have been using both. I thought Mothers is softer and tackier but I cannot tell the difference if one is better in removing contaminants. I've dropped the Meguiars a few times and had to throw it away. I've never dropped the Mothers clay bar. Anyway, I'll be using Mothers from now on. There's virtually no difference in the prices anyway. Thanks for the enlightenment from this review.

    As someone who recently got into the world of deep cleaning a vehicle, I fully detailed my car including using the Meguiars kit. As someone who's never flayed before I'll agree it felt weird to the touch, and I did wind up taking an hour to fully clay everything, due in part to my lack of experience, but I did have to use more effort and pressure with the Meguiars bar than I've seen you use in videos. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out, but next time I'll go with mother's!

    I bought the Meguiars. It worked great. I detail my 2 cars all the time. Their both white. It looks very clean. I did my '93 Subaru Impreza first. It looked great and smooth as glass. It pulled a lot of contaminants. The clay was very tacky and I put the clay in the sun to make it more pliable. He sounded more like a salesman for Mothers product.

      Quick Sipper. I have some clay bars that are several years old and all are hard as a rock. So you are saying I can soak them in hot water and they will soften up enough to use them properly?

    • @sinistergroupon
      @sinistergroupon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Careful here. Sure you can make them soft again with hot water. It's not about that. The clay bard if used enough will have so much debris in it that it shouldn't go anywhere near paint. Clay is a consumable product. You just need to throw it out after a while.

    My experience with both has been the exact opposite. I had two pure white cars I needed to get bright red paint overspray off of (so yeah, the bar showed what was coming off very vividly). Went over the first car so many times with the Mother’s, and after waxing was still finding areas of red haze. The Meguires was straight forward and fast. Two passes... done! Every time I second guessed myself and went back over a third time, the bar came out pure white. Nothing left to take off.

Would never use it again. Then used Checical guys ceramic hyperwax on paint/windows/headlights. Then coat of chemical guys butter wet wax. Looks amazing.

    I got tired of paying over $20 for those kits and only getting enough detail spray to clay 1 car, and subpar clay that doesn't stick to my hand, as you mentioned, and always ends up falling to the ground. I recently bought 320 grams of clay on Amazon for $15. Its made by Towel Motors, includes a tin to store the clay as well as wax paper to keep the clay from sticking to anything while being stored. I still haven't got the chance to use it, but I will update as soon as I do. It seems like a fairly good kit and is a good value.

    The Meguiar box has value when you are done using it and the white color gives a good visual. The tack is what makes it drag. This causes you to use more lube. I think I'm going to try the Mothers to see for myself.

    I am convinced Meguairs must have changed their clay formulation. Several years ago, it was like real clay. Now it is like silly putty and inferior to the previous version. It stretches unlike breaking like a real clay bar. Amazon seems to be filled with similar comments so I don't think it is just me. I loved the old formulation and am curious to try the Mothers.

    Hey Scott, once the car is washed , for drying what could be the best way?
    1) the clay kit has a spray lubricant, is it advisable to use it along with the clay kit , when it’s wet? I have seen people using ammo hydrate for drying.
    2) after that use paint protection selant , Griots Garage One-Step Sealant 16 oz.
    3) to clean the scuff on the sealant instead of wiping with microfiber cloth , use Meguiar's Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Car Wax to remove the white scuff marks, which will also add as a wax.

    This is an interesting review. I got a new to me car and there was a lot of contaminates in the paint. I had the Maguire's that I started with because I had it stored in the little box. I went digging through my detailing stuff and found one of my mother's bars, and it was much more mailable and tacky. I actually was looking for information on how it should feel and if the clay was too old to use. However after your review I think it's just the difference in the clay. I did find that the Maguire's took a lot of passes and elbow grease to remove contaminants. I'll be using the Mother's this weekend and hopefully it's a better experience.

I chose the Mother's Kit. It performs exactly as demonstrated. I used the detail spray very liberally, with just a little pressure, and folded the clay about 5 times too. I've tried every clay made I think. Megs sells 200g "Professional" bars in jar in aggressive and mild formulations. Retail kits are sketchy anyway. Megs aggressive (almost pink in color) has few equals in quickly cleaning the lower rocker panels that get unbelievably dirty here in New England. From my early research a decade ago a company in Japan has the patent on auto clay and all clay was (at least then) made there and the difference was what the buyer specified for grit, etc. That may have changed since but I found the major seller's clay has stayed pretty consistent. Clay Magic iirc was the "original" (first marketed) clay and from the color, Megs Aggressive looks to be identical to clay magic "medium" and Megs "Mild" is the same exact blue as CM "fine." I can't tell the difference. That white stuff is only sold by megs in that retail kit and I think they tried to make "an idiot proof" clay by making it so mild it stinks on all but really clean cars to begin with.

    If the clay bar is sticky, plastic, rubbery appearance. Are they of better quality? thank you in advance
    I own clay bar meguiar's C2000 and C2100 and 3m perfect it lll. They are expensive but very powerful.

    I had this experience with the Adams clay bar. Seemed very "plasticy" and not very tacky. It's the same color as the Meguiars, and I also noticed that Clay Magic also has a "polymer" gray bar now...with the same color. Could the Meguiars be a polymer clay bar like the Clay Magic? Maybe the polymer aspect is what makes this stuff seem less clay-like? I always used Mothers when it comes to clay bars for them being nice and tacky, but maybe the industry is improving with these polymer bars? I'm curious now.

    Never used a clay bar , bought the mother’s kit. Do I use the whole first clay? Or break it up . Can I re use or just throw out
    Thanks

      @Judgment 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be reused a few times. You'll be able to tell when the bar is ready to be discarded once it has too much dirt and grime even when kneading. You can break the bar... 1/3 should be enough for multiple usage.

    I bought the Mothers BEFORE watching this video, and now I will buy a plastic soap storage box at Walmart for 50 cents to store my clay in!! I know nothing about clay but I went with mothers because you get more clay. GLAD I DID TOO !!

    I'm sure you can buy a "box" to store you clay bar in at a local Dollar Tree store/Walmart...lol. I've used the Meguiar's clay bar....no issues for me. I'll do a head to head comparison.

    I've never tried this before. How much can one do with the supplied bars from each kit. When do. You turn it over use a. Different side. Maybe I should look up how to use a Clay Bar. Thx

    Thanks for this review. I've personally always leaned over to meguiars because I have used their products for over 10 years. However, I switched over to Mother's because of the cost factor. Either way I'm here today because I am about to go buy another kit. I may be sold on Meguiars because "ooOoo it comes with a box" haha.

    This actually very helpful Scott. I have been shopping clay bars on chemical guys website and without any experience, it’s hard to know which one to get. Can you explain when you would need the different levels of clay like they sell? I have a truck and a boat that are both pretty well maintained, but have never been clayed to my knowledge.

      blake dymond Original clay bar is for light contaimenents which are not bonded on very hard, it also doesn't require as much back and forth motion..There Heavy clay bar requires alot of backs and forth and gets heavy bonded contaminants off but it takes a lot longer...

      KC Outdoors thank you! I have an older run around in the city car that definitely needs the heavy bar. Looks like I’ll be getting both.
