Well, actually they only ripped off Sam the Sham. They wanted to use "Hey Little Red Riding Hood" but Sam the Sham wanted too much money so they wrote the similar sounding "Foul Owl" sung by Boomer & Travis.
Ralph was Skinny the whore house proprietor in Unforgiven. He also was in another western called The Culpepper Cattle Company where he had only a minor part playing a preacher.
Wow! The actor who plays Ralph I just saw on an old episode of " Gunsmoke" yesterday. He played the usual bad guy in a situation with Festus. It was sort of a Western hostage situation. LOL!

As they were filming this during the fall in Illinois, the actors had to chew on ice chips between takes to keep their breath from showing up on screen.
The director placed so many subtle references in the scenes, like at 2:25 when the word "watermelon" first shows on the sign as Gillespie confronts Tibbs! Throughout this movie there are so many unspoken aids to the plot. the characters, and the underlying prejudices which tell as much of the story as the dialogue does. BRILLIANT!
Observe how “ Ralph “ holds and manipulates the knife at the juke box - exactly how knives are handled and concealed by those with bad intent - a small but significant ( imho ) piece of foreshadowing by directors ..
Virgil must have picked upon Ralph's unease which was way off the scale. Usually country cafe serving staff would go along with anything the local police chief wanted, just look at Easy Rider.
Rod Steiger went through 263 packages of chewing gum during the filming of this movie. Trivia question that I don't know the answer to; What brand or brands of gum did he chew?
Rod Steiger never seems to have understood that the modern use of the camera demands an understated acting style. His acting is better suited to films of the 40s and 50s, with their more theatrical staging.
