- Part 6 of our ground-up rebuild of Ford's iconic RS200 Group-B rally car..
A deep dive into how this group-B rally legend is constructed, the materials used plus some of the thinking behind its design.
This hopefully gives more context to the previous videos that have dealt with parts of the chassis in isolation.
Chassis number 068 was retired due to extreme damage in the crash-bang world of 90s rallycross then discovered years later in a field with grass growing through it. Now that the work on Bluebird K7 is on hold the award winning team is devoting its energy into resurrecting this icon.

Who’s ‘not a very good TH-camr’? This series of yours is one of my favourite things on TH-cam just now. The thing about TH-cam is that not everything has to be a complex production. The way your producing these does not detract from my interest and entertainment in any way whatsoever. No need to change. Just keep doing what your doing. We really appreciate the efforts that you are making to share all this content with us 😎👍
Thanks for the positive feedback. It's all a bit of a learning curve but it seems to have to been received fairly well so far. Always time to cock it up in the fullness of time.
Really interesting video Bill, I regret not travelling over to see bluebird, I really should make the effort to visit one fine Saturday next year.
Absolutely - the Kerosene Café will reopen in the spring and we'll get the cars out.
@@TheBluebirdProject fab, I’ll come over in my 90s homologation car, not quite as rare as yours mind
@@stewriley1183 Please do... We like to have visitors
I'm really enjoying the build series along with all the interesting stories :)
Thanks, there's plenty of stories. I'll throw a few more in.
Brilliant explanation. I look forward to your regular updates.
Brilliant piece, so much to learn, I’ve worked on so many rally cars in the past but never had anything to do with an RS200
We've never had one this far back to bare bones. It's a real learning experience for us too. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed learning that. Interesting channel. Thank you.
Thanks for explaining everything, I have allways liked them but had no idea of it's construction, definitely yellow btw😀
Ems still says it's peach...😁
Very interesting content. Thank you.
Thank Bill. Fantastic as always. Big difference between that cage and the modern stuff Malcolm builds in carslisle.
It's really rubbish by today's standards. We looked into having some of the work on Bluebird done at Malcolm's place to keep the Cumbrian connection but battering shapes from old Land-Rover bonnets and fastening it together with aircraft rivets was way below his talents. He also professed to hate the RS200 so that was him straight in the bad books. :-)
Thanks for the insight 👍🏴😉
Thanks for watching and the feedback. Appreciated.
Great video.fantastic to see how the car was designed and assembled.the gearbox is a big old bugger!
The box is a ton weight, you're right. Glad you enjoyed seeing how the thing is put together. It's going to be challenging to fix it but we've done worse.
awesome video thanks, its nice to see some proper info on these great cars
If there's anything else you'd like to know just ask and we'll try to include it in a later film.
Excellent stuff.
Cracking video as always Bill, very informative
Thanks - appreciate the feedback. When we're finished demolishing and into the glue and rivets you must come and get covered in epoxy.
@TheBluebirdProject sounds good to me mate, would love to help out with my composite expertise
@@Bloodsweatngears24 That would be great! We're going to need it.
Great video, loving this series 👊
Thanks, appreciate it. Suggestions always welcome for the next film.
Very interesting and you made it clear what’s what. Never seen the chassis layout before, helpful of Ford to include it in the manual. They wouldn’t share that now😂
They give you a full set of wiring diagrams too. I think they were expecting trouble.😬
Really enjoying these videos. You're doing a great job.
Thanks, much appreciated.
That is actually really interesting, cheers. It is yellow by the way...
Glad you liked it but Ems still insists it's peach and is threatening her own walk through video of her box of coloured pencils. 🤣
Ok so when its on paper it's yellow the actual pencil looks peach 😂
Thank you for the video great viewing ive a few questions myself the RS200 was known to be heavy compared to the other cars some 200kg what made the car heavy? Was it the tub ? The transmission or both i belive for 1987 and the evo cars there was going to be a weight reduction but not sure where or what
The transmission is heavy but it was most likely the bodywork in its original form. Fibreglass is heavy and there's plenty of it, it takes two people to lift that rear clam. It was scaled back to paper thin for rallycross. The standard wishbones were also big heavy forged steel things at the front. They were superseded quickly too. And glad yo like the video too. Suggestions always welcome for content.
The gearbox was weak i think near every rally in the British championship mark lovell was having a gearbox changed these problems was obviously solved time the cars was in rallycross but still the still the high speed props used to snap
@@forcedinduction2918 Those props were made in carbon in the end but the boxes, as you say, did suffer as the power went up. The front driveshafts were originally from an Austin Maestro too so you can imagine how good they were!
Are you going to build a frame jig from 139 to sit in the damaged one on to get it straight.
We have a brand new and unused tub in the next workshop for reference and we've pushed and pulled all the critical dimensions on 068 to size with bespoke bottle screws. Once we have some new parts built we'll check them all again before the rivets and glue starts.
@TheBluebirdProject thats handy, a frame jig will save you hours in the long run with all the major pick up points in the correct position.
@@petespanel It would, but it's a lot of work to turn out a single tub. we'll see how we get on containing all the dimensions and if it looks like getting sketchy we'll make up some tooling.
Is the longitudinal strength mainly from the gearbox and engine pick-up points Bill?
Most of the longitudinal strength comes from the honeycomb sills and the roll cage. the gearbox just hangs underneath weighing the same as a small planet!
