Chasing Snow in the Drakensberg | Sehlabathebe National Park

  • Last Winter, I joined my parents on an overnight hike to Tarn Cave and Sehlabathebe National Park, on the border of South Africa and Lesotho in the Bushman's Nek region of the Southern Drakensberg. Having spent the previous year obsessively checking every weather forecast for hints of snow, and having been completely without luck, I knew that this snowfall was not one I could miss. We were certainly not disappointed, and quickly found ourselves in a real winter wonderland, beneath the impressive Devil's Knuckles.
The hike to Tarn Cave is a very manageable overnight hike, and the cave itself is comfortable, with some of the best views of any that I've stayed in. A worthy inclusion on any Drakensberg bucket list!

Hi Daniel, i do enjoy your videos! Was this the tail end of the Giants Cup trail? And which cave did you sleep in?

Thank you, I'm glad to hear it! We stayed in Tarn Cave - I haven't actually done the Giant's Cup trail, but I think that may well be the case. Not certain though

Thank you! I remember us being able to make a call from somewhere quite near Tarn cave, but the reception was definitely limited. Still, you'd certainly be able to find patches of signal if you need

Magical! So special to experience this with your folks. Is this park accessed through Lesotho?

Thank you, special indeed! I think it can be, but we parked at the Bushman's Nek border post and hiked up from there - can be done as a day hike
