Absolutely enjoyed watching these videos on the swap. I have an 86 BII that I’m looking to get back up and running. Also considering a motor swap to the 4.0 too. I don’t see much benefit for me to run a V8 in it. I’m looking to lift it to run 31’s. Any advice? Thank you for your time.
Thank you very much! In my opinion the 4. 0 is the way to go. We have swapped several Rangers and BII's with 5.0's and they certainly have their place but I feel the weight and torque are not the best for the frame as far as a drop in goes. Best advice I can give you is to have the entire donor vehicle with you and go slow. After your 1st one is complete you will be hooked on the little 4.0's. Hit me up if you get stuck and I will try to help you out.
@@risersgarage7004 thank you for the reply and advice. I’ll definitely be looking into donor vehicles as well as potentially buying a crate engine with everything I may need. Still weighing the options. For now I’ll probably just get it running until I can figure out the best financial option.
Wow! I've had a 4.0 94 Explorer Sport and an 89 Bronco 2. Like you I want to find a Bronco 2 and stick the 4.0 in it. I didn't think it would increase the power that much. Did you modify the gearing also or is it the same that came with the b2. In my case, I went through 2 transmissions and an extra rear end or 2 on the b2. Only problem with the 4.0 in the Ex sport is blown enginge at about 300,000 miles. I could've gotten more if I would have changed oil like I was suppose to but I never did and it cost me.
I changed nothing as far as gearing, I used the stock Maxda M5OD but opted for the larger clutch and flywheel of the 4.0 I have had zero issues since thus and have done several more conversions. Best of luck and reach out if I can be of any help.
@@risersgarage7004 I found a source that claims the whine is caused by air in the fluid that cannot escape due to pump design. The fix is to use a rubber stopper in place of the cap to connect pump reservoir to a vacuum source (they used engine vacuum) to remove the air. I'd probably use a vacuum pump, since I have one. Another source says a pump not purged of air first before startup will whine afterward because it's damaged during initial dry startup.
I have Bronco I'm want Swap the engine from a new one which is the newest engines 4.0 you recommend a Ford Ranger 2005 what you think it Will Fit In the bronco ll is 1990 ??
Okay so a 2005 4.0 is SOHC which is different than the 4.0 OHV I install. It can be done just will require more work on the electrical side as the newer engine is OBD II and your Bronco is OBD I. I have yet to do this job on a Bronco but am confident I could make the swap. I wish I had better information for you. Best of luck!
Honestly, other than a clutch and a flywheel because my donor was an automatic it is fairly straightforward. I did rebuild the injectors and re-gasket the engine. But no special parts are needed.

Do you know if the 4.0 engine block will fit on the Mitsubishi 5 speed transmission? I would like to do the 4.0 swap eventually. But for now I'm trying to buy a driveshaft for it that will fit but unsure how to go about it I added a 4" lift kit. And ruined the gkn type driveshaft. Need to find a replacement driveshaft that fits with the lift kit. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
The engine block is the same as far as the bellhousing is concerned. As far as your drive shaft goes, I have had good success using explorer drive shafts and having them cut and rebalance by our local driveline shop. I usually use a drive shaft from a 2 door Sport, but you may need one from a 4 door to compensate for the 4" lift kit.
@@risersgarage7004 thanks man. I appreciate the help. Im curious as to the driveshafts i find online. I have found a few that say they will fit but says nothing about for a lifted one. They do however have different sizes ranging 30" to 36" im wondering is there any reason i cant measure the size driveshaft i need and order one online ready to go?
No problem at all man. There is no reason I can think of, the only reason I use cut explorer driveshafts is they are already on the parts trucks and I am a cheap bastard. Empire or any of the driveshaft companies can build you a driveshaft.
@@risersgarage7004 well i can say the same for myself. I always go the cheaper way if i can get away with it. I honestly would like to try your idea with the explorer driveshaft more. Your 4.0 engine is OBD II and your bronco is OBD I. I have not tried to graft the two harnesses together in a setup like yours, like I did in the videos. I have done a newer 4.6 explorer and I had to use everything wiring, guage clusters and all to make it work.
So the easiest years to convert are 1989 and 1990. You can use the rest of the BII drive train as long as you have the Mazda M5OD transmission. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me

It's crazy, some of them do and some of them don't. Factory original steering pump on my 90 mustang is quite as a church mouse.
