Thank you for the tips on how you paint white clothing. It is always good to get advice from someone so accomplished. Looking at these Carthaginians the results speak for themselves, it is just a question of my developing enough skill to emulate them.
Hi John, excellent update and your tips are very insightful. Great work on the Carthaginians, great definition in the colours. I’m like you, I always paint with a slightly brighter shade than the historical colour, as I think it gives clarity 3ft away on the table. Take care and looking forward to the next one 😁👍
⭐️I always enjoy your video and your brushwork is excellent. Also agree totally that when painting white the one thing to actually avoid using is white….for Napoleonic Austrians I am finding that the Scale Color Artists series Pearl Grey gives a nice shadow base…your Carthaginians look great ⭐️👍
@@JackSargePainting Yes - apart from really liking the texture of the Scale Color Artist paints I have found that Pearl Grey an excellent base to provide the darkest shadow then building up with any number of off whites gives an incredible amount of possibilities to create numerous “shades” of white. With regard to Napoleonic Austrians if you check out either re-enactors or original paintings it’s fascinating to see just how many variations of “white” are present
Lovely Carthaginians 👍. I really like your Austrian White recipe. I will be trying that out for sure. No new paint sales for Vallejo this week though, as I’ve got those colours 😆.
Another expertly painted set of figures - brilliant stuff. 👍🏻 Do like Gripping Beast ancients. Think these are Carthaginian Italian Allies with their triple disc armour (so similar to the Victrix Samnites you did, albeit they were unarmoured). Called Carthaginian contingent on Saga site but Italian Allies on GB Punic Wars web page where they’re also slightly cheaper! Great advice on painting white. Love your colour tips. What was your skin recipe for these guys? Usual wash & red earth ink base? Then which colours? Thanks Chris
Just smashing good job on those Carthaginian, well done. Very interesting recipe on white. I have two ways to paint white, this was something new I have to try out. I have to try this on my Iberian Warriors. Buy the way what colors did you use to paint the backside of the shield, the wood side? Cheers & take care. 👍
Thanks Nic, glad you found it interesting. I believe it was Copper Brown from Vallejo Express range - but Flat Earth from Vallejo Model Colour is a close match too.
W❤W! That’s Incredibly Awesome! 🤗❤️✨
Thank you! 😄
Hi John, I always look forward to your videos, well done on this project and thank you for posting 👍👏👋
Thanks 👍
Cheers for the additional insights into paint “white”. 😊
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks Paul that is very kind of you. Do what works for you, this is just one idea amongst loads out there. Cheers, John.

Thank you very much. That Pearl Grey looks a nice warm colour, it looks part way between 2 Reaper paints I have - "Ashen Brown" & " Dirty Grey".

First class Carthaginians...with gorgeous shields!
Thanks very much Phil 😊
Amazing Carthaginians! Love the shields!
Thank you Nic 😊 The shield designs are decals from LBMS with a wash applied.
Amazing mate your art even within your paint mixes are what make you my favourite

Thanks Andy. Need to lift my game and find some more obscure paints to add to your shopping list. ;-)

Thanks Chris. Yes, red earth ink and wash. This was followed by the Bronzed Skin triad from Reaper- this is my go to for Mediterranean types.

@@JackSargePainting Thx, I try that too.
All these armies who wore white must've had one hell of a field laundry service on campaign, is all I'm saying.
Indeed, either that or they turned from white to khaki after a few weeks of marching :-)
