I have worked closely with the band over the years on three of four studio albums, including the 2005 debut How to Save a Life and 2009's follow-up, The Fray.
The Fray were formed in Denver, Colorado in 2002 by classmates Isaac Slade and Joe King. Their talented songwriting put them on the global stage very early in their careers with the release of their debut record, How to Save a Life, in 2005.

Man who thought of that guitar riff when the beat dropped at the point where Isaac said “where were you”? That is so catchy and I love it!

This whole album by The Fray meant so incredibly much to me as a little 12-13 year old kid, it instantly brings back so many memories, its crazy how 10 years later everything has come full circle and now I'm watching the engineer of one of my favourite albums giving a peak into the magic they created. Thank you, Warren Huart :)

This track is songwriting perfection. Every element of "You Found Me" is what a songwriter needs to strive for. I'm so glad my wife turned me on to The Fray. Amazing writing.

I miss music like this and productions like this. People have gotten so stuck on what is easiest and what will give them the most option during mix. I paint myself into corners all the time. If I am stuck, then I re record. This style of productions brings the soul to the music. Nice work Warren!

Man, I can't thank you enough for this video, it's the best thing I ever saw on youtube (the best thing I saw period). I loved The Fray since the first time I heard How to save a life, which has been the anthem of my life since forever, and it's also the first video I posted on youtube, me playing and singing the song when I went to Norway once with my high school, when I was about 15 years I think (so about 10 years ago) - you can chech it out, it's still up. I'm from Mostar, which is a small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so traveling to Norway was a big thing in my life, and it kinda made me want to follow my passion for music even more, since I had a chance to perform there. That night I even got this pseudonim H of The Stage, since people there couldn't pronounce my name, they called me H, and this one guy said after I played the song, dude, you're like H of The Stage, so I kept it since that night (my name is Hrvoje Merdžo btw, good luck saying that :D)
I hear you saying how much the lyrics mean and I couldn't agree more, How to save a life, you found me, we build then we break, vienna, say when, look after you... all life-saver songs. I've listened to every single song of the band, but those 2 first albums are out of this world, and I love the raw sound of them. It feels like you're in the room with them when you listen. When you played the song from the begining I was amazed just how well it sounds without any effects basicaly. They really made an effort to play everything live. Isac vocals are like no other, some people say we sound a like, maybe not by the colour of the voice that much, but we have a simmilar singing style. I found a lot of inspiration in the way this band sounds when writting my own songs since I'm also a pianist, singer and a song writter. I put my heart in my lyrics, and the music is there to make the lyrics come alive, so I'm basically a story teller who uses music to make the stories come alive. I've learned a lot from The Fray, a lot of good life lessons, but as a musician I really understood what it means to be a band. I watched a documentary about their tours, I think it was called ''Fair fight'', and they are like a family, which can be heard in the way they play and go about writing a perfect song.
Even though I've listened to You found me a million times, and played it with my brother, I've never noticed the Clavinet part or I just taught it was a guitar. The back vocals are epic in the bridge. Love the drum fills, and love the second verse rhythm sooo much. I've always noticed the difference between the first and the second verse and just thought, man, that was really well invented. Usually the second verse just has a new instrument melody to fill it up and make it different but no, this just had amazing drums, bass and the way that hihat rings (always loved that). As much as I respect and love the piano sound, I absolutely adore the guitar sound in this one. It's sick, and it brings the pain of the vocal and lyrics to the whole new level. I mean, Warren, I could write about this a whole day and it wouldn't be enough. I love the song, love The Fray, love you for doing this video and for recording the song in the first place. I can honestly say I had some really dark times and these songs really helped me through them. Now I'm in a really better place, I record my songs, I teach singing and piano, I'm getting married in July wuuhuu, and I'm a complete person (that doesn't mean I can stop learning and growing), and a lot of it has to do with this song particulary, as well as how to save a life. I know you've recorded a lot of songs for a lot of big artist, but man, I maybe wouldn't be here at all, and wouldn't write this comment if you haven't recorded these ones, and I think that's the biggest award you can get in life, no bs. Thank you for this, sorry for the huge comment and for being a little too honest, but I really mean it. These songs are lifesavers, and so are you as well as the whole band. Have a marvellous life man, you deserve it!

You are amazing Warren. A producer that not only hears the "mistake" but acknowledge the fact that; The performance is more important than the perfection.
For me that makes me think there is still hope that producers wants to make music and not just money.
Music should never be perfect. Music should be human.

As a guitarist I don't often listen to piano driven bands but when I do I'm always immediately envious of how much the guitarists in bands like these get to just create color and add atmosphere. But as an early Verve, RADIOHEAD, Circa Survive, Brian Eno etc etc fan I like atmosphere in music as opposed to wall to wall solos. : )- Really dig your channel dude!

Hats off for great taste in pianos! Mason & Hamlin is my most-favorite builder. FYI: 150 years ago, there were over 200 piano factories in America; today, there's only one! Mason & Hamlin! Given a choice, most touring concert pianists choose Mason & Hamlin over Steinway. The Mason & Hamlin AA grand is a thing of beauty! Sonority, power, touch . . . all that! Any studio should covet one of these instruments.

Great one Warren! Really shows the benefits of committing to sounds when recording. It makes the song easier to mix.

Your such an inspirational soul Warren! Thank you so much for the time and enthusiasm you give us mostly every day! I do have a question about maintaining phase coherence when recording drum rooms tho, and that is how do you measure your room mics to be in phase with your overheads? Do you have a method? Or do you just move them until their as close as you can get? Any tips would be great, cheers.
Thanks again for all your amazing insight.

Saved. Can’t wait to watch this. It’s going to give me major nostalgia from when I interned at Epic Records around the time The Fray was working on this album.

That was the summer of 2006, I believe. Maybe I’m thinking of The Fray’s first album. I was mostly working for Farra Mathews in A&R but also helped out some Marketing folks. Names coming to mind are Lee Stimmel and Scott Greir (sp?). The project I spent the most time on that summer was Jessica Simpson custom cuts on her single A Public Affair - where we added background vocals to cut people’s names into the song. That was Charlie Walk’s idea. I had to listen to that song a few thousand times.

Funny you mentioned the 414 in the piano sound hole. I was recording at home base studio in Nyc in 1990 with my band and I was playing a piano part on their Steinway and the engineer took 2 87’s and buried them in 2 of the holes then squashed them with 1176 as I remember and said don’t ever do this but it was a great squashed percussive sound that served the song

SAMPLING THE SAME DRUMMER WITH THE SAME SNARE ON THE SAME DAY WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE!?!? =| lol I'm seven minutes in and already feeling like I should be taking notes! Also, so far, from the unmixed version, I've never noticed how cool that pre-chorus guitar part is!
... And now at the end, how cool a FEW of the guitar parts are! lol Lots of great pieces in that puzzle. Thanks for posting as always!

I never noticed it, but when you said it, it clicked in my head: There are massive Counting Crows influences in The Frays songs. Its just that Adam Duritzs vocals are so unique you wouldnt nice it right away.
