I remember seeing No Detroits on signs in nice truck stops that had concrete in the overnight parking. They had to park in the dirt. Guess the oil dripping made the truck stop owners unhappy. 😂
As of my 18 years of driving, if I was to test now by clutching, I’d fail, lol all I ever knew was floating gears, hell many times in a pickup truck that’s a standard, I float those too lol
Wow. That must be about 79 or 80 model, my uncle had two very much like that one same shades of green pattern was Slightly different, cummins 13 high rang , pulled red frame fruehaulf dumps , You have a gold lol nugget there👍👍
Somewhere on yuktub there is a video of 2 Diesel trucks driving by the camera. A 4 Cycle V8 and a Detroit 8V92. The 4 stroke sounds like a helicopter but the Detroit just Hums. I tested the DDEC system at GM on engine dynos. The 8V92T was just awesome. The warmup for the opacity smoke test was Wide Open Throttle at Rated Speed for 20 minutes. Then the actual test was a run up from idle at WOT to rated speed then zero throttle w/ an rpm drop then back to WOT under full load until rated speed. In other words it sounded just like someone was running it thru the gears. I'm 72 and I can still "Feel" that sound. ben/ michigan
After that first shot of ether I was sitting here screaming in my head "hurry up and start it! That ether isn't gonna last forever! Don't worry about the hood! Push that start button!" 😂 good sounding truck. Is that Terex green I see on the engine? Did it come out of a scraper or dozer or something?
All Detroit Diesel engines were painted Alpine green at the factory. I don’t know if that’s because the military were their first customers back during WWII and the army loves painting everything green or what.
❤@@sha1omactually, they were painted red for International Harvester and some were painted white for kenworth ( for awhile as was Cummins etc) and white for marine...and that lime green for terex and possibly Euclid ....it depended on which company Detroit was supplying....an d there were exceptions..depending on availability at the time I guess
My pet HATE is all you ill informed people talking about Detroit Diesels They are NOT SUPERCHARGED (that would mean that the cylinder is pressurized with more than atmospheric pressure by the blower before piston starts to compress which is not the case) Turbocharged Detroit engine is a different matter Yes they have a blower which is solely for scavenging the cylinder as they are 2 stroke engines and do not use crankcase compression
Drew - you are exactly correct. GM called them "blowers" because that's all they did, blow air into the airbox for scavenging. GM also called them "naturals" because the pressures did not make for "super" charging, only charging. I had a couple of 6-71N's in my boat, 310 hp naturals with high compression and advanced cam timing. Magnificent engines.
I believe the clutch linkage pieces you need to replace what they welded can also come from a White 4000, 9000, Road Boss 1, or Construcktor with the old corporate cab OR an Autocar A, DC or DK series if you’re having trouble finding another W-Star for parts.
I like the truck, great piece of machinery. Im listening to this though and i have not got foggiest idea what he is talking about when it comes to gear shifts.
Yup. Go ahead & mess with the clutch linkage. You will burn up whats left of the clutch & it wont shift worth a damn. Its a spicer/lipe clutch. Adjustment is done by a ring on the pressure plate
Waiting to long it’s cooling off heat of compression is how it ignites that little bit of go juice is not gonna work load it up you’ll never hurt it I’m sure you heard all of people saying OMG be careful with the staring fluid
With the detroit diesels if it doesn't have a turbocharger it will have an engine driven vane type blower for forced air induction. I have heard that this is called a hard charger.
Technically it’s not defined as a supercharger, because the air comes out at the same pressure it went in. It’s just being moved, not compressed. If you put that Roots blower on a gas engine, then it would be a supercharger.
@AustinEh due to the way the engine is designed, it needs that blower to create positive pressure in the cylinder to scavenge the exhaust out. On a 4 cycle engine, it would be a supercharger, because 4 cycle engine can naturally aspirate without aid. Being that this is 2 cycle, it's just a blower and considered naturally aspirated
Thats a silver92 Detroit.. 8V92.. correction.. its A silver 8V92 N .. good engine the Non turbo series are turds but the Twin Turbo with marine injectors are beasts I worked on Detroits for 30 years… keep oil in them and they will run forever!
@@AustinEh gotcha I stand corrected! Detroit did make silver 71 series but i only seen them in military and marine applications/ possibly this truck was a surplus re power? that's possible ive seen that alot I love those old screamin jimmies!
@@mpedward2 oh that’s very interesting! At its age I guess anything’s possible, I’ll double check the door tag, it’ll probably tell me what the truck was originally equipped with.
@@AustinEhThe 8v-92 had a vibration dampener on the front end of the crankshaft behind front crank pulley. The 71 series engines, engine serial number would have been 8vA a 92 series would have been 8vF.
I'd prefer the 12v just for childhood memories but to be honest these got to be the worst engines ever made, unnecessary noise and not for anyone with anxiety problems or need to move immediately
New SUBSCRIBER here driv,ah frickin awesome western star love it. I have a 13 speed shift knob you can have only problem I'm in Michigan but your welcome to it if we can ship it
The old 318 green leaker truly a legend back in the day

@@dougtaylor7724 well all diesels leaked back then most still do today
Nice to hear it running once again. Those old 2 strokes can't be beat for their famous scream!
The heavy haul, oil patch, and log truck drivers I worked with know how to shift with or without the clutch depending on conditions like a pro should.
This is the original blower whine. The best sound ever
Love the sound of a Detroit

Yep we all new it wasn't going to start first time...ten minutes after putting the eather in.....
Lmao, yeaaaahhh.
I was thinking the same thing!!!!
Sounds amazing. Love those Detroit Diesels.
Detroit Diesel 2 strokes, more noise per gallon of fuel!💪👍👍
Supercharger is called a Roots Blower by MR GM
The 6.71 and 8.71 Detroit diesels are music to my ears. In your opening shots I see the nose of a '54 Chevy truck. Nice!
Nothing sounds like a 2 stroke detroit diesel!❤ subscribed! Right on!

Thank you, and yeah it’s 79.
super slow idle sounds really cool
FYI
Starting fluid evaporates rather quickly 🤔
Sounds like the snow grader when i was young. Rrrrrrrrrrrr! 😊
8v92.
That's my sweet spot.

318 300 oil leaks 18 hpr i loved them low boy had it in there when I was first around a lot of trks and heavy equipment was Detroit's i liked them

Great bit of information
People forget that the BLOWER to scavenge the cylinders has been used as a supercharger.Anyhoo, carry on😊

Hauled loader down long 8-10 percent grade in Fairbanks with dump truck with 8v 92 silver. Cab was full of oil smoke by bottom of hill.
Yes they have a supercharger (blower) but it doesn’t make any boost at all it’s purely to make the motor run
I wish my grille crown was in as great condition as yours is👍
No load, match the RPM. More fun to downshift with no clutch though :) Fun beast.

Its a spicer/lipe clutch. Adjustment is done by a ring on the pressure plate
Free play is done by a ring on the pressure plate, brake squeeze is done by adjusting the linkage. Those are 2 different adjustments.
That boy has the best toy
You go son
Ya it's super charged ear full but u can kill all the bugs down wind np 👍🏻🤘
It sounds exactly like one of those public buses from 40 years ago from 8:00 to 8:09
They were supercharged, two stroke diesels won't start without forced induction.
8v71 Detroit 2 stroke diesel and 13 speed. Start up, driving and shifting.
That’s a good looking truck
NATURALLY ASPIRATED
Worked on lots of green meanie s

They will always have a vane blower regardless if they are turbo or not.
If a Detroit has no super charger they won't run
The 18 spd boxes you can split the low and high range
yeah you need them for wheezy 4 strokes!

Better read up on adjusting the clutch
That “high torque “ starter doesn’t sound any better than the original Delco that’s supposed to be in there.
I’m only running 2 battery now instead of 4 and the series parallel switch is gone.

Detroits are not supercharged
Yes they are..usually referred to as a blower
Definitely not a supercharger, read your Detroit workshop manuals👍
you only need a 13 speed because detroits ain't pieces of shit like dumb 4-strokes!
lost the prime. Probably a leak on the fuel
Just cold, on warmer days it fires up without any starting fluid.
Splitting hairs its still a super charger
Uh, no it's not, it doesn't provide any supercharging of intake air, it is barely above atmosphere,👍
What truck is this? All icould find was that it's a white western star.
That’s what it is, 79 white western star.
Detroit are not supercharge but it can't pull without a turbo
I think that is because people use too small of engine for job! Idiots go off hp rating instead of ft-lbs!
Rookie.......
That is NOT! how you adjust a clutch for free play!
Если бы на советских дизелях хоть раз так газонуть, то ловил бы уже запчасти от них где то в верхних слоях атмосферы😁
