There is an additional variable in that they are also describing common stereotypes associated with the region they're impersonating - meaning the other person can guess without specifically recognising the accent! Boo! Unscientific!

Brilliant north Wales accent, I detect Gwynedd or Anglesey. The fact that the woman had no idea shows how much Welsh accents are always depicted as south Wales. There was a recent drama on Radio 4 (of all places) about the early years of Lloyd George, and he sounded like he was from Neath. Totally wrong.

my family played this game last Christmas - only there were two sets of cards you had to draw from each time - one with the accent and one with a phrase you had to say in that accent. You also had to do it in a certain time - think it was a minute to think about it and say it. It was harder than you'd think, especially with the more obscure accents. And there was no giving clues allowed either!

I don't think US and CA accents sound the same, for one example Vince Vaughn and Jordan Peterson. It seems to me that famous Canadian actors like Ryan Reynolds or Ryan Gosling try to Americanise their way of speaking, but a simple TH-cam search makes it obvious your average Canadian has different speech patterns and pronounces certain words differently to Americans. I'm English and Canada is interesting to me, like how some of you guys speak French, the Canadian/French accent hybrid is pretty cool.

The Wrexham accent is undoubtedly the most underrecognized and underrepresented one in the U.K (it sounds mainly Scouse with a bit of Welsh and Manc thrown in). I was expecting that for North Wales but the North West Wales accent was the most convincing fake one here, probably.

One Hindi doctor in north Wales told her that when he answered the phone, people hearing his accent would begin talking to him in Welsh.
"I thought maybe it isn't a coincidence, and if I dig deeper I might find something more," Ms Mathur said.
Particular similarities between the accents are the way that both place emphasis on the last part of word, and an elongated way of speaking that pronounces all the letters of a word.
"We tend to pronounce everything - all the consonants, all the vowels," Ms Mathur said.
"For example, if you were to pronounce 'predominantly', it would sound really similar in both because the 'r' is rolled, there is an emphasis on the 'd', and all the letters that are used to make the word can be heard.
"It's just fascinating that these things happen between people who come from such varied backgrounds."
The similarities have sometimes proved particularly tricky for actors - Pete Postlethwaite, playing an Asian criminal in the 1995 film The Usual Suspects, had his accent described by Empire magazine as "Apu from the Simpsons holidaying in Swansea".

you guys do know there is no such thing as a "British" accent? Accents and dialects vary widely across the Great Britain, Ireland and nearby smaller islands. As such, a single "British accent"
does not exist. However, someone could be said to have an English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish accent, although these all have several different sub-types.

An Irish accent cannot be British as Britain is an island

    • @Nilguiri

      Sassy
No. "Great Britain" is the name of the island. "Britain" can mean the British Isles or the UK. So it does certainly does include Northern Ireland and arguably could include Ireland although it is not generally understood to include Ireland, so to an extent, you are right, but not for the reason you gave.

Britain can't mean the UK it's an island. The official name for your nation is the United Kingdom of Greeat Britain and Northern Ireland. great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales. The UK includes Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland became an independent nation in 1921 and has nothing to do with the UK or Britain.

This is poorly done and shoddy television that insults the intelligence, if not the people they are doing stage school shite impressions of. If you want to do British accents you at least get someone from the place, or even better: go there. Newcastle's accent is different to Sunderland's. Bolton's is different to Central Manchester. If you cannot do all 4 well enough to be recognisable you should not be doing a show impersonating British accents.

I don't watch tv and have never seen Made in Chelsea, so I wouldn't know. On the other hand, I did most of my growing up in Chelsea, and the accent I hear whenever I'm back in town doesn't seem to have changed much since my youth.
