I heard Ringo talk about how his being left-handed was actually the reason for the very slight delay before each tom stroke. I've heard many attempt this song but have never heard anyone play that slight delay the way Ringo plays it on the studio recording.
The interesting thing is how the beat totally changes a minute into the song. For 20 years now I always thought it stayed the same during the entire song. The Beatles where so clever. I wonder how/why Paul came up with that idea for the drums.
Actually, I think it seems “different” in part because that downbeat on the verses is always a bit LATE. As Ringo explained it, this (along some of Ringo’s other rhythmic idiosyncrasies and “innovative” patterns) came about because basically, he’s a left-handed guy trying to play a right-handed kit. There is literally NOTHING fancy or complicated about it besides that. I’ve noticed that many Ringo impersonators (including Beatles tribute bands like The Fab Four) fail to capture the lateness in that downbeat properly, probably because they are approaching it as a classically trained RH drummer “should” do it on RH-setup drum kit.
I was listening to The Magical Mystery Tour album and it segued into this song, one that I rarely choose to listen to. Then I noticed the beat change for the first time in my life! I was like "wait ... What?" These guys still surprise me!
i'm not a drummer but i instantly know that drum beat at the end of the song is not how it's supposed to sound. i then watched their live performance in Blackpool and i knew it was really different how Ringo hit those drums.
we do not play to a click track, we track to the actual song, which was not done to a click. As a general rule beatles songs to slow down throughout I’ve noticed. So you can get a bpm of the beginning middle and end to see what the average BPM is
