I agree. The sloppiness of the edge of the frame actually accentuates the subject and the cleanness of the center. She is isolated from the chaos. The image works.
"Elderly woman?" - "middle aged, "at best Sam, lol! I think the word that sums up the mood that you are attracted to is 'ennui,' a certain boredom or tiredness of spirit that sometimes overtakes. Your best photos seem to capture that moment in your subjects and the framing helps to isolate it. Your story was fun; I felt like I was along for the journey with you, so not really a failed trip, after all!
Yeah I sometimes get the meaning of words mixed up :) English is not my native language. And thank you for suggesting the word "ennui"! I actually have never heard about it but it describes it pretty well! I will use that as a project title for now :)
Thank you so much for having shared your experience! I had similar experiences: going to a place with a project in my mind, not finding the context I expected (bad weather conditions, too crowded, ...) and starting to be frustrated. I learn that the best way is exactly what you suggest: enjoying the street as it is, being open and curious. I would like to add that we should avoid to move too quickly from a place to another: if possible we should stay at least 1h in place just to study the lights, the people in that context. If something interesting happens during the observation is good otherwise we will have a background for the next time we will decide to go back to that place, for example we will know the spots that are interesting, on which time the light is good and so on.
Two of my photography buddies and me went to the next bigger city some years ago. Wintertime, cold, but Christmas lights everywhere. We wer full of energy and strolling around. Eventually we ended up in a cafe, frozen to the bones, drippy noses and not one single good picture on the cam. At least the coffee was good 😁
I like how your camera acknowledged your efforts for trying at 15:12 - in all seriousness though, I do love the premise of this video. I still feel a bit of that pressure when I go out with my camera to only take bangerz but it is good to push through and you never know what you're going to get. I hope you can make a few more of these.
Thanks Samuel, I really liked this one. It reminded me of some of my trips when we could still travel :) Photography only reflects your state of mind, what you focus on and the way you look at it, so it's no surprise your favorite pictures that day show some sad and lonely people wondering about what's coming next. Great pictures by the way! When I'm back in Russia (now I'm in Switzerland with my wife and kid, probably for another 6 months or so) I'll invite you and your friend to Saint Petersburg, I don't know if it would be a successful trip or not, but it might be an interesting experience and fun. That's of course if Russia or the whole world isn't turned to dust by then. Have fun!
Good Story and share! Love the image you came away with! I travel to NYC at least once a year, and always go to the same location in Central Park to shoot. Always go for Fall foliage images, last year either I was early or the leaves were late to change colors, and I felt like it was a wasted trip and photo opp. And just standing there, different images presented themselves. Pandemic-related images of people walking in a beautiful park with masks on. It seemed out of place but so current that I felt it should be a moment to record to remember this crazy time.
Awesome video. Something about that lady's expression will stick with me. I think this photograph will always stick with you as well, and be intriguing because we'll never know what exactly was on her mind during that moment in time...and we'll probably always wonder about that. It's such a hopeless/sad expression. It reminds me of old street from the 40's/50's. Timeless. (even though I just put a time lol) As we get old and eventually die, this photograph will live on and people in the future will look at it and also wonder about this lady as we do today. And of course there will never be an answer to what she was going through that day, but that adds to the mystique of the photo. It's awesome, Samuel. Great work.
Yes, sometimes going out taking photos and at that moments didn't feel anything good taken. But, then after a period of time, you see the photos again, and feel that were just very interesting indeed.
I had a similar (though on a MUCH smaller scale) experience just yesterday. I'd been feeling like I was in a photography slump so I just got up and went for a walk. I took a few snaps but didn't really feel like much of anything came from it. But there was one picture that made the entire trip worth it. It's my own little gem from that adventure.
Oh cool! I've also never thought about it until my mentor mentioned it. Sometimes we need others to tell us about ourselves because we can't always see what we really see (lol) :)
@@SamuelStreetlife Definitely easier to see things from an outside viewpoint. Although, it can also sometimes have the opposite effect! Those times are so weird.
I agree that street photography can be a thankless task sometimes. As you found out however, the opinions of others can be very helpful in making you appreciate and understand what you are doing why it works for you. I have found in my work that cataloguing is a very useful tool. I used to just include where and when an image was taken but, as time went on, I added stuff when I started to see a pattern or theme emerging. For example I found that I take shots of people lying down a lot. I catalogued this as 'supine' and this now feeds into my street work as I walk around. Lots of my Paris photography trips end in disappointment but as I live in the city I've got used to it ;-)
Definitely that photo was worth all the trouble in the trip. Loved your analysis of the photo and the 6 photos that you put together form a great set. You definitely caught them in that particular reflective mood which is difficult to define but is so interesting.
This exactly happened to me and my friend, we got a supper good air ticket to japan on sale, we booked the flight but none of us had applied for annual leave. My friend got his annual leave on the same date as the ticket but i couldn’t so i had to join him in japan a few days later. We liked street photography and japan is a camera heaven, we bought jour very first film camera and shoot so much. The best adventures starts unplanned.
Hey Samuel! Nice image and sweet story behind it. My motivation in street photography is the thrill that there could be an image hiding behind the next corner. Though it means that you have to accept and embrace failure at any given time, or to put it down with Alex Webb’s words, 99,9% it’s about failure. My experience tells me if you can live with that fact, you will be rewarded with overwhelming happiness and success every now and then. I had such a Moment years ago in the middle of what appeared to be a wasted day, when suddenly a little girl walked into my frame...
Very good point! I can walk many hours because I have the same motivation usually. Sometimes I take it too far though and I miss other appointments or work until exhaustion and if I didn't find anything itneresting it feels bad. But if I was in a good mood it doesn't matter that much. But days when I feel a little negative I make it worse by trying too hard. It is not easy but it all is part of the game and I wouldn't want to trade it with anything else :)
Very insightful story, thank you very much for sharing it Samuel. Managing (especially my own) expectations and making alternative plans in case something happens really helps me alleviate a lot of frustration when going on trips.
I definitely have moments like this often, specially when I travel. Sometimes its a matter of needing more time or being in the right season. But for the most part I feel it just needs to be ridden out and when you reflect back you might find something special.
Paris is the city where I have started street photography when I was a student between 2017 and 2019. Also that is when I had discovered your channel and started watching you. I'm sure you'll have a better performance in your next visit :)
I can't even have a meal at a restaurant for 24 euros and you're out there flying to other countries for that price! Europe is on another level. What a privilege! Great format for the video, too. I like the concept of going deeper into how a specific image was made, or even noticing that you had an overlooked shot wayyy later.
It isn't like that anymore now but yeah, it is pretty nice! I will see if I can do more videos like this. It also gives me an excuse to look at my work more critically and try to understand it better. Good to hear it isn't too boring :)
Woooooow, i was looking at your vídeo and it amazed me that You know about the hard political situation in My country Venezuela, thank You for sharing the truth ! Every second of exposure helps! 🙏
That is my brother at the end! I also used to skate a lot but broke my ankle and that ended my career. I can still skate but can‘t jump from anything high and need to be super careful not to hurt my ankle which is hard.
Thanks Samuel, you are right, you won’t get “anything “ if you’re not “out there!”. And BTW, just swapped my xPro3 for an X100v. I think I’m hooked after my “f”.
Seems like you imagined, drew for yourself some image of what you're going to see and to photograph there. Exactly that pushed you out of the comfort zone even the "bad" weather is never a reason not to enjoy the trip or some walk. I always say that the "bad" weather is the best weather to see out of the box and to examine our perception. BTW your video of the walk with Tatsuo Suzuki is the best one in your collection.
been waiting a while to see some skating in these videos lol was that your brother? those lines were pretty sick, i will never understand laserflips haha
Great story man, you changed a bad experience for a great one, just needed to see it from distance. And for that switch lazerflip you just got a new subscriber, I didn’t have a clue that you skate that good, so nice! Don’t you like to photograph skate as well?
Thanks Rafael! But that was my brother skating at the end :) I was just filming him. I had a bad injury years ago and I can't skate anymore... And I did do a lot of skateboarding photography in the past. I was thinking of doing something with my brother for a video because I think street skating and street photography has a lot in common :)
@@SamuelStreetlife oh, I’m so sorry, injuries sucks, but glad you find your way in the streets photographing 🤝 Thanks for answer, really appreciate! the algorithm make its way and showed me an old video of yours, about the Ricoh relationship, and could see there the skate pics, very nice!! I liked the ones of top view and flashes. Would be great to do it on natural light, to seek it as a street photographer approach. Actually, I’m a skateboarding photographer and (inspired by you and others) now I started doing this POV videos, but mixing up with street photography, I called it POVtography. It’s on my channel, it’s a bummer it’s in Portuguese (because I’m from Brazil) but anyway, you should do this, I’d love to watch, cheers bro! 👊
It seems you experienced what it is to be a Parisian. Feeling miserable is part of the deal. And overcast weather is what we experience most of the time. Mostly I expect the light to suck so when it is great it's a surprise and then I'm so excited I end up doing shitty pictures. So yes as you said embrace what's available. The end of the video with your brother skating is really pleasing though. :)
The punch lines are so intense. A lesson and a self-discovery. These are the main characters of your story. i think you're right that you were still emotionally reacting while conveying the story but it was part of the story none the less and it creates that contrast of not believing into a situation and still creating the opportunity. But the bitter taste you had and still have, is taking the first role and was trying too hard to get nominated to the oscars where the real deals are the punchlines. Or was it intentionally underplayed them to have like an unexpected back whip in the end ? What do you think ? Such a good story and good story telling. Glad you found the way to make something out of it. Succeeding or failing, no difference, there's a story that can be told from each path.
Yes! It's hard to create dynamism intentionally without making the frame feel orchestrated. But this time it was unintentional and therefore more truthful. Happy with that!
@@SamuelStreetlife Ah really! Will definitely check it out. Seems like you'll be coming full circle to the Fuji x100 series. In the end - doesn't matter which or how many cameras you end up with you're a very good photographer. See you on the interwebs 🏄🏻♂️
Recently i went to a next bigger city. Scrached a wheel in my car on the highway and lost my watch (30th birthday gift, had it for 2 months 😑 ). Not a single good image, fuck that day, never going there again 😅
About 8-months ago someone broke into my Jeep, stole my sling bag and inside was my GRiii. I was so pissed-off I didn't buy another camera for 3-months. The when I finally got around to it, my local camera store didn't have a GRiii. So I walked out with an X100V. Oh my gosh, what a pretty camera. And the OVF is amazing. But 6-months later I realized I just wasn't using it or even carrying it everywhere like I did the GR. So guess what - I finally admitted that a beautiful as it was, I just didn't like it as much as my GR. So I bought another GRiii and tried them both back-to-back for awhile. One I sold and one I kept.* *...the GRiii.
Oh man I can feel the pain just by reading your story! And very interesting to hear your final decision :) I was in a similar situation when the GRIII came out and I still had my X100F. Although I really loved my X100F I did take my GRIII with me more often and when I brought both of them I didn't see the point of having both. The experience is different but the results are not that different. But the convenience factor became more important to me than user experience. With the GR I always feel ready for any adventure :) I can walk into any place and get pictures without getting noticed. It's a cool feeling.
I saw a "genesis" book back there, you should try to contact Sebastião Salgado next time you're in France (I worked with him here in Brazil and he is very kind)
Does he still live in france? Man I would love to meet him one day. He is definitely one of my favourite people (and photographer) out there. Must have been amazing working with him!
Great theme. They all look like they are in need. Something looks like they have been caught in the honest moment of asking the universe for help or strength. Like if you flicked through them real fast, all with the face aligned to the centre it would say something about the mundane evil of casual existential suffering or something French like that. 😂
Bello having a good time, how can he dare?! Just joking haha But besides I know those shots that you do not remember taking but in the end are pretty good.
For these type of short trips, or other abroad, sometime you need a Fixer...😜... a photographer from the city who will give you good tips (and even a free couch to sleep) ans let you discover by your self also. feel free to contact me next time... take care. I like your message: try to do the most with the situation as it is... actually for me it's a rule of street photo
@@SamuelStreetlife that's what i thought would happen, but honestly it looks good, so i'm glad you got 1 photo out of your trip. I kind of prefer it zoomed in tight like you had it. Anyways, if you're ever in Philadelphia or New York, You have a place to stay if you want.
@@mrpedroleal90 That is very generous man! Appreciate that a lot. I hope I can someday take that offer and be back in NYC :) Its a litte difficult at the moment.
Yes, good advice. We only had one day and that is usually when I want to make the most out of my time but at the same time I know that it can also ruin the experience.
That was my brother! :) I should have tagged him... I had a shop sponsor when I was still skating. My Brother rides for Nike SB and some other brands I forgot.
Yes, the images you displayed starting at 14:00 are of the human condition. They are very strong, not only exhibiting the emotions of the subjects, but abstractly recording history and the contemporary props we are surrounded by. Well done Samuel.
I agree. The sloppiness of the edge of the frame actually accentuates the subject and the cleanness of the center. She is isolated from the chaos. The image works.
Yes! It gets a snapshot character from it and I like that.
"Elderly woman?" - "middle aged, "at best Sam, lol! I think the word that sums up the mood that you are attracted to is 'ennui,' a certain boredom or tiredness of spirit that sometimes overtakes. Ok but the way you grabbed that skateboard was cool af 🔥🔥🔥
:D Only took me 10 tries or so.
great timing, i'm visiting paris next week for the first time :D
Ohh perfect :) Enjoy your time in paris!!!!
@@SamuelStreetlife thank you, i will! apparently it will be rainy the whole week :'D
Kind of funny that the one picture that worked was the one that reflected your whole trip experience.
Nice skating there by the way dude.
that speed-up clip on the bike at the end of the video reminded me of a scene in Amelie's (2001) ending😅
Btw, great work, Samuel 😍
Oh right! :) Thank you! I had fun working on this.
@@SamuelStreetlife oh, I’m so sorry, injuries sucks, but glad you find your way in the streets photographing 🤝
Thanks for answer, really appreciate! the algorithm make its way and showed me an old video of yours, about the Ricoh relationship, and could see there the skate pics, very nice!!
Buy the X100V. You’ll not regret. Just another focal length for you to use.
love it!
Thanks :)
Haha yeah I got the full paris experience hehe :)
Whens the Ricoh GR IV going to come out?
Also, tilted lines add dynamism to that picture. A capture of a fleeting moment.
Yes! It's hard to create dynamism intentionally without making the frame feel orchestrated. But this time it was unintentional and therefore more truthful. Happy with that!
The more I do street photography, the more I embrace the randomness of it. I just shoot what the street gives to me (and what I don't miss 😅).
Skate-board at Bastille's place ! - Come back dude for a second trip - Best
The short video portrait of the kids in the wheelchair is beautiful.
It was a very lovely moment indeed. You can see more of that scene in my On The Street With Episode with Ulysses Aoki :)
@@SamuelStreetlife Ah really! Will definitely check it out. Seems like you'll be coming full circle to the Fuji x100 series. In the end - doesn't matter which or how many cameras you end up with you're a very good photographer. See you on the interwebs 🏄🏻♂️
@@PeteSantiago Thanks Pete really appreciate your comment!
Was that you skating at the end?
No that was my brother :) I was filming
One I sold and one I kept.*
*...the GRiii.
I need to go to Paris to cry.
Bucket list for sure lol.
That moment its call in spanish, mirando al celeste.
Great theme. They all look like they are in need. Something looks like they have been caught in the honest moment of asking the universe for help or strength. Like if you flicked through them real fast, all with the face aligned to the centre it would say something about the mundane evil of casual existential suffering or something French like that. 😂
Haha yes, I can put a lot of meaning into it with smart sounding words lol.
What makes you keep using x100f? How does do better than x100v?
Noch mal Glück gehabt 🙈
who is skating at the end?
Bello having a good time, how can he dare?! Just joking haha But besides I know those shots that you do not remember taking but in the end are pretty good.
Thanks man :) Bello is just too mellow to be stressed 😀
For these type of short trips, or other abroad, sometime you need a Fixer...😜... a photographer from the city who will give you good tips (and even a free couch to sleep) ans let you discover by your self also. feel free to contact me next time... take care. I like your message: try to do the most with the situation as it is... actually for me it's a rule of street photo
1:37 that was ironicly funny lolXD
Sorry for my bad english
Samuel, what about cropping out the lower left of the image? It looks like someone's shoulder.
I tried cropping the shoulder out but it changed the overall balance too much and I like it better with it included :)
Ist das dein Bruder am Ende? Hut ab ☝🏼
Ja das ist mein Bruder!
I think you should never attach expectations to photography trips, for me my best photo's come when i dont expect
Yes, good advice. We only had one day and that is usually when I want to make the most out of my time but at the same time I know that it can also ruin the experience.
damn son. Samuel fuckin shredding! any sponsors?
That was my brother! :) I should have tagged him... I had a shop sponsor when I was still skating. My Brother rides for Nike SB and some other brands I forgot.
This trip at least show you off how a great friend is the guy that came over Paris with you
Yes, he is a very good friend!
The canonet toh
Croissant. I was not expecting that - I died. Leave your Fs below.
Legit though, I love the sentiment of this video. Thanks heaps

Paying for friendship 😂
Haha. Sometimes money get the motivation level up a bit :D

Mission failed successfully.
😂
Bastille is not like that anymore
How is it now? I know that the skate park is not there anymore right?
