    Good buys on all of those ! I picked up a set of Sony MH150 bookshelf speakers for $3 then spent another $17 to replace the grill fabric and upgrade the crossovers. I thought it was a bargain! Also picked up a set of B.I.C. SV6 s for $10 that are missing the grills and are banged up some but sound perfect. I've hit up thrift stores, yard sales , and flea markets to buy older gear to repair or refurbish. I never make any money but it's fun to fix them listen a while and then possibly give them a new home to someone that appreciates them.

    I have been working for a stereo repair shop for about 14 years. We used to do a fair amount of Bang & Olufsen repair, and a lot of Bose repairs both in and out of warranty, until bose shut off all their Servicing contracts and assumed complete responsibility for all service. We still service some older Bose equipment at component-level, things that the circuit- board-change-out "Techs" at Bose don't fix nowadays, but in all honesty, I hate working on both Bose and B&O products and I would never consider owning any of them for myself. Currently on my workbench is an old Bang& Olufsen receiver for a complete rebuild, the thing has got leaking caps all over the place and a complete recap is about 60 parts, plus you have to replace all the lamps with the exact same current-draw value or the electronic switching doesn't work right, and the bass control didn't work and I had to disassemble the slider and repair it. We keep pleading with the boss not to take that stuff in, it always takes longer than expected, cost the customer a significant sum of money, and yet it's not really profitable for us and frankly I don't get any satisfaction out of bring Bose or Bang & Olufsen equipment back to life. Plus the casings for both brands (Bose in particular) consist largely of plastic clamshells that snap and screw together in really strange ways with a mix of unusual fasteners that are all different from each other, and B&O units are held together pretty sloppily with double-sided tape and double-sided foam that deteriorates and makes a god-awful mess it has to be scraped off and replaced. Most Bose units by the time they're less than 10 years old have dead caps or leaking caps as well, and again you are often looking at replacing 30 or 40 or more capacitors inside a compact device where better quality capacitors that are typically larger then the crappy miniature caps Bose used just don't fit easily or well. So there you have it, from a technician, why I don't care for Bose or Bang & Olufsen. Hugely expensive to buy, complicated and costly to fix, doesn't sound all that good to me; and for what it's worth I have decades in around the audio business.

      good 'un Variety is the spice of life. And you’re making this statement solely based on what you’ve worked on. I don’t buy loudspeakers based on serviceability, I buy them on price and sound. And what I have has cost next to nothing. The point of the video is to show what can be found at thrift shops, very inexpensively.

    KLH Model 6s used (red) oil filled caps. I have rebuilt several sets. ALL, every single one of those caps were bad, registered no capacitor value at all on two different cap testers. This caused the HF frequency speakers to not work AT ALL.
    So, recapping was a good choice.

    I first bought KLH 17 in 1996, then upgraded to KLH 6 in 1968 because the 17s lacked definition in the high driver. The KL:H 6s were much better in the high end, but clearly inferior to the AR-3a and JBL models of the day. When I pulled the 6s out of storage about 6 years ago, I discovered that the crossover had failed in one speaker. When I went into the box to repair the crossover, I found that the crossover components were encased in resin and sealed into the box. I gave up and donated the pair of 6s to the Goodwill. Contrary to commentary here, I would consider the high end of the 2-way KLH 6 to be sonically inferior to most major speakers of the late 1960s and thereafter because the driver was tasked to cover a wider frequency range than it could handle. By comparison, the same driver, used as the mid-range driver in the 3-way KLH 5 model, performs well. You don't see the KLH 5 around, probably because its price probably produced 1 sale for every 20 KHL 6 sales.

    • @ArthurJS123
      @ArthurJS123  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Randall Stewart Recapping the crossover on my 6’s was one of the best decisions I ever made. To my ears, they sound spectacular. And I can’t compare them to speakers I’ve never owned or heard.

    I think the acronym that you were trying to think of for BOSE is Before Owning Stereo Equipment! LOL!... The majority of BOSE stuff, especially the smaller sub-sat systems, are "muddy", slightly "boomy", and have that notorious "hole" in their midbass because of the tiny satellites not being able to reproduce anything below like 200-300 Hz... Or above anything over about 12KHz... However, I did sort of appreciate their larger bookshelf and floorstanding models, such as the 301, 501, 701, and 901, (IF used with the active equalizer anyway), those models could sound decent IF set up and placed properly in a room... But I won't go on any further about BOSE, because there's MUCH better sounding and quality brands out there to be had used!

      I had a friend that had two pair of the 901s driven with 2 Carver integrated amps hooked to a Quadraphonic adapter back in the 70's I still think that was the best I'd ever heard Pink Floyd. He also had a pair of 18" Altec Subwoofers that I helped to design and build powered by homemade 160w cllass A tube amps with an electronic low pass crossover.

      I owned a set. They are loud and clear. They have nothing resembling staging or imaging. They are big, awkward, and bulky. The 901’s are nothing to lust over. And the “direct reflecting”
      gimmick gets old, very fast.

    I found a pair of klipsch b3s at goodwill as well. I paid 15 and used sharpie to repair them. What a funny coincidence.

    Why would you shoot this video with such bright back light? I couldn't see anything. You should think about your videos before you shoot them.

      I have 5 pair ? That I use for listening to different content plus changing up the sound on occasion is a good thing.
