I wonder why they had to be athletic, the intersect comes with fighting skills. Plus, Chuck is not athletic.

Like anything else if the hardware is inferior it undermines superior software. The better trained/physically adept the person who gets the Intersect the better than can exploit it. Chuck while average was still physically fit enough to give a decent platform for the Intersect to work with, but if he'd been physically fit he'd have been even more capable.
