    This is interesting, and so wonderful that they are doing this experimental building, reducing waste, utilizing the used tires....but it's important to note that these constructions are not "Earthships", which are very specific and more architecturally sophisticated.

    WHY CAN'T WE MAKE TIRES THAT LAST 20 YEARS?

  • @MrCBMax06

    Do tires leach any chemicals over time?

    • @Polarfoxlover

      Automobile tires--a potential source of highly carcinogenic dibenzopyrenes to the environment

    • @jamesoliver5688
      @jamesoliver5688 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Elevenstrings V The older tires have already offgassed as they were being used by us Human Beings . In Mike Reynolds studies and experience he has documented that the re was no off gassing and further more , the tires were all sealed inside . Its really not a worry anymore .

    • @Polarfoxlover
      @Polarfoxlover 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Oliver Crumb rubber can be produced from scrap tires. Studies have been conducted and scientists have come to the conclusion that there is a connection that the chemicals from the tires may be a cause of cancer. Crumb rubber is made up of compounds suspected to be carcinogenic (cause cancer). The International Agency for Research of Cancer has studied the crumb rubber with multiple tests in cancer treatment hospitals and rubber fabrication facilities around the world. Rutgers University did a study in 2006 of the tire crumbs that were being used on synthetic turf fields, and they found six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These compounds are most likely carcinogenic to the human body. Due to a solvent extraction used to release the chemicals in this laboratory study, it is difficult to know how much is actually released into the environment and whether this exposure is significant. A study of the chemicals released from crumb rubber found 49 chemicals, with seven of them being carcinogens.

      Hmmm. OK . Have they tested the structures being used for off gassing after they are sealed in by cement and earth and hardened clay/adobe walls that have a continual air exchange ?Apparently , this was also a concern of Earthships and the results are available . Just have to contact them and ask for the results .

      +James Oliver If I was into building a house from cheap materials, I would choose straw packs. I really don´t want to spend time testing some toxic levels from waste materials like tires. Even the build process is terribly odd and unwieldy, because of the oval shape of the tire. I know it is a Reynolds design, building a house from waste, but I think the logic is overtaken by his conviction.

    I love straw, too. But as purveyors of Car Culture, I also feel an obligation to repurpose the waste we generate. Toxic? Like old tires would be less toxic in piles in the landfill? Let's cut that NIMBY shit out and face the music!
