    The design of Apple is always years ahead and seems to never age, truly remarkable.

      It's amazing how windows has been reinventing itself over and over again yet Mac has looked the same since 1985 and has never really had a reason to change

    The Start button and task bar really made a huge impact in GUI.

    as someone who like gui design and how content are presented on a computer this video really cheer me up. i respect all ui and their design, some ui have really slick and cool icon like gnome and machintos and some other have really geek or nerdy feels to it like holo ui of android. metro ui looks futuristic. aero desktop of windows vista and seven looks cool too.

    No Mentioning of the X Window System (1984) who is still used today on almost all Linux systems, Motif (1989) who invented most interface elements that defined how GUIs look today? Or CDE (1993) which introduced features recently added to Windows 10.
    No Mentioning of KDE or GNOME or XGL or Compiz?
    This list is very uncomplete and lacks one of the most important influences.

  • @Ichinin
    @Ichinin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There were also BEOS, GEOS/Desktop and later on, Linux came out strong with a GUI in 1996 after having loitered around for a while in the TTY world.
    Many other Unix flavours also did their own XWindows like HP and SGI (etc). The home computer Acorn (UK) like Atari, had a built in GUI that was popular in the UK.
    There was also other GUI capable devices such as the pocket PC (Windows CE) and Apple Newton devices that did what your average Smartphone/pad do today.
    I suspect this was a school presentation video and not some historically accurate Discovery Channel documentary, so i skip adding to the criticism others already have given and leave these quotes here if anyone want to pick up the challenge and do a more comprehensive video.

      Isn't everyone hoping to forget the green monster?
      Besides it's not really relevant here as it is not a unique step in the history of the GUI, especially the Atari version. It was simply a derivative of the PARC GUI which Apple stole and had the nerve to sue DRI over trying to steal it too. The Atari TOS version was just one of several licensed versions of GEM, all of which are essentially a dead branch on the evolutionary GUI tree.
      Better to have complained about the unclear timeline presented here and the omission of OSF/Motif, OpenLook, and eventually CDE and their descendants, including TWM, and of course KDE.

    • @westchestertechnologies6687
      @westchestertechnologies6687 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChristopherGaul Apple didn't "Steal" the PARC GUI, Apple trading Apple Stock to Xerox in exchange for Apple's engineers to be allowed access to the PARC staff and to study the PARC GUI. Xerox were complete idiots. They developed PARC as a way to have something to sell because the Japanese were killing them in the copier market that Xerox created. The Alto and the Star represented everything we use today: Mouse, pointer, GUI, WYSIWYG, Laser printers, ethernet network, email, chat... all that in the 1970's. Don't even get my started on PLATO from CDC, they created what was essentially everything the Internet is, but did it in the 70's as well.

      BlackGymkhana IIRC the date is about right, but the version shown is totally off. Clearly the author of the video don't know much about GUI history and shouldn't have researched before posting a video of random images with random annotation.

      Maybe the creator of this Video is a typical Microsoft Windows User and has no experiences with other UIs etc.. Amiga OS/Workbench 3.1 was coming out in ca.1993 with Amiga 1200 and 4000.. in 1985 Amiga OS 1.0/Workbench 1.0 came out with the Amiga 1000.

    Every difference between Windows 10, OS X/11, and every major Linux shell amount to only minor tweaks, minor differences of UX philosophy, and minor differences of eye candy. The same is true for the GUI in general from 1984 to present. Case in point, the desktop. It's gone from being a neutral colored background for windows to be stacked upon, to a high pixel true color image or animation for windows to be stacked upon. Even third party apps that "mod" the desktop do nothing but stack some info on top of it. If you get crazy, you might even stack static shortcut icons to your most used apps/files/folders on top of it.

    What about GEOS.. GEOS on the Commodore 64 was my first introduction to a GUI style OS and it was amazing.. I still can't believe to this day how they got a full Windows style OS with loads of apps and office apps available for it all the while running on a 1mhz CPU with 64kb ram.. I heard it was all programmed in assembly language

    1986 - Apple II WTF ??? Apple II was released before Macintosh and did not even have GUI and specialy not Apple System ( later known as Mac OS ).

    • @sortoftubular
      @sortoftubular 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, the Apple II was released long before 1986. But a GUI interface was released by Apple about 1986 as noted in this video at 1:07. By then you could buy an AppleMouse IIe with interface card, or an AppleMouse IIc which plugged directly into later Apple //c models. But there was not a lot of GUI software for the //e and //c. I used to have a hardback reference book printed by Apple for their //e and //c GUI software for programmers who wanted to use it. Also, of course, the Apple IIGS came out in 1986 and had its own similar looking GUI in 1986 as part of ProDOS 16.

    Why this GUI where not implemented in a co processor card with own graphic chip and rom code, letting the current processor run full speed, like servers where a GUI is useless or can be deported. Dos 3.3 introduce pipes that would act to turn DOS command into graphic GUI

    I appreciate the effort of showing all the different cool graphical user interfaces, but there are a few suggestions I would like to point out. For example you just give the name of some Mac models rather than the System version, you got wrong the version of Amiga OS (there have been quite a few versions and the interface evolved over time, much like Windows). You forgot a few very interesting systems like RiscOS, the GEM GUI of Atari , and BeOS (BeOS was the precursor of Haiku but it came out much earlier, in the late 90's). The Operating System "QNX" has a great GUI as well, worth of mention. ARoS and Amiga OS 4.0 would have been nice to see as well. And in regards to Linux, you have mentioned some distribution names, but as a matter of fact, Linux has so many different GUI's that can be used on all distros and are also used by the BSD OS, so it would have been more appropriate to just name and show the different GUI's (from Gnome to KDE, from XFCE to Enlightenment) stating that they are typically used on BSD, Linux and probably other systems.

    Windows ME was insignificant and just a propped up 98. Windows 2000 was a big step with it's NT core. Also you skipped 3.11 which was an important milestone. On top of that BeOS was significant and apparently Linux wasn't a thing at all.

    The Japanese Stole My 3D Tilted Window User Interface I built in 1998 and Created Madotate in 1999, then Microsoft used Madotate to create Task Gallery in 1999 which then resulted into Vista Aero 3D Flip, Then Apple also Used My 3D Interface and Created Cover Flow for ITUNES. Then in 2005 -2006 Apple then Stole My Interactive Menu that I used for My Portfolio version 1 website that was built in Flash to create the first 2D Interactive Smartphone Home screen and named it the Springboard and Used that to create the IPhone Touch directly after the Ipod.

    Anyway this video have nothing with description and title of the video because it does not represent evolution of OS because you put some GUIs that are copy of much older ones or they are just inferior to older ones and they are not evolution of GUI at all.
    Haiku is funniest of them all because Haiku is some sort of BeOS clone and Haiku GUI is 100% same as GUI from BeOS that died long time ago.
