    I'd bet dollars on the belt being the incorrect size and not charging the alternator and once the battery depleted itself the car turned off. Spinning a rod bearing typically doesn't make the motor turn off suddenly like that. Paired with the slow cranking after i feel pretty confident in my guess.
    But if a rod bearing did spin and i'm just a dumb asshole, damn that sucks.

    As a fellow BMW guy - I felt that. I have a 1991 850, I refreshed the motor (gaskets and all), fuel system etc... Only to find out that once I did that - the motor in the car was actually on its last legs when I got the car and by making stuff how its supposed to be - it showed signs of a bad block. Did a compression test and there it was....
    So part 2 was to source a good engine (it was way cheaper to buy vs rebuild) - so I did a M70B53 (hybrid build) - did everything again on the new motor. Swapped over all the "new" accessories. Cars been solid since.

    I used to own a MK6 GTI which had a known timing chain tensioner failure. Before Volkswagen put out a recall I attempted the repair myself. I bought a $250 kit with the updated parts, this was the most in depth job I attempted at the time and I put 8 hours of labor taking my sweet time as to not mess up. Well somewhere along the way the chain skipped a tooth and when i finally finished at 2am and cranked the engine. Pistons met valves and I lost all compression. If I had a camera on myself I would imagine I would have had the same expression as Jobe did.
    That moment sucks but thank you for showing mistakes happen. You could have easily scrapped the footage. The reality is these things happen, buts important to take a moment of reflection and then pick up the wrench and get back at it.
    And hey, at least its more content 😆

    The last 30 seconds man... That's was my worst fear this past summer. I rented a lift to do a bunch of work on my 5th gen Camaro. Was upgrading the oil pump, deleting my factory oil cooler, upgrading my aftermarket oil cooler, adding racing oil pan baffles and cut a section of the subframe to make it removable to make it easier to work on in the future. My first time tackling something this involved.
    I thought it was going to be a 8-10 hour job... 24 working hours later, I was running out of lift time. I rushed to get everything back together and because the engine had nearly every single oil passage drained, I was going to pull the fuel pump fuse to prime oil system with the starter.
    Guess what I forgot to do in the rush? The car started right up and I had rod knock for 0.25 of a second, but disappeared. I still shut it down and my heart sank...
    The lead mechanic was in the shop and heard it too. He said that was pretty normal in this situation and to start it back up to see if it came back.
    Started it up, and it sounded great. The 30 minute drive home was the most anxiety I had experienced, listening for ANY weird noise. Luckily what happened to Jobe did not happen to me.
    She has been running great since!
    Sorry your luck was not on your side man!

      Hey, pardon the advice, you may already know this, but if you are ever doing that again:
      if you floor the pedal during startup (holding both the brake and accelerator to the floor), the engine will crank but it doesn’t start. Works on all my modern GM and Ford vehicles and even an LS3 crate motor. Allows you to prime the oiling system without having to unplug the ECU or a fuse. I’m glad your car is okay!

    i reckon the squeal at the end was probably something to do with the serpentine (aux) belt

    • @guilhermebjr

      Yes, I thought the same; it seems to be a rubber noise.

    • @maasman240
      @maasman240 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Except the motor shut itself off and locked up while driving. The noise may have been the belts, but that rotating assembly is cooked in that car. It could barely crank when he tried the starter.

    • @guilhermebjr
      @guilhermebjr 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@maasman240 If the engine had locked up with the wheels and gearbox in gear, wouldn't it have made the engine explode? Or would the car have had the rear wheels locked?
      If he spoons a bearing, the melted connecting rod shouldn't break and implode the engine from inside, making a lot of noise?

    • @maasman240
      @maasman240 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @guilhermebjr a spun crank bearing won't really detonate a motor entirely, it will just put a tremendous amount of drag on the engine, so if he pressed the clutch pedal to change gears or coast it would have stopped immediately. He probably heard and felt it totally stop and just kept the clutch in until it rolled to a stop is my guess but not sure

    • @maasman240
      @maasman240 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@guilhermebjr if the motor was revving at all and it seized up due to the crank getting way too tight, all the accessories would also continue to spin for a moment until the drag of the belt stopped them, this might be the squealing noise as well

    I loved my e46 M3. My favorite project was the valve adjustment since that isn’t a common project for a modern-ish car. Built my own valve adjustment tool from an old tooth brush, heating and bending the head, and gluing a rare earth magnet. Would have loved to see you do that in a future episode and you might as well toss a vanos repair in there too.

    First, where the hell is Jere on this!? You help him in his builds! Also, legit looked like you wanted to cry (and could have with no judgement). If my mans is acting, give him an award!
    Jobey, saw ya in Tuscon down at the finish line since that is where I could park with trackside parking. I wanted to say I recently go into a BMW (back into Euro), an Estoril Blue M235i with red interior. I am super stoked about this car, where I haven't been in a long time (went BRZ>STI>M235i in 6 years). I was heavily modifying my BRZ until I was hearing valve issues/possible rod knock. I started with a MKIV Jetta (sold to my lil brother and he still has it, but it doesn't run) and learned everything about working on cars with that Jetta. I love that ECS is where you came from! Loved you on Donut, the three Js Jere, Jobe and of course James. You and Jere's personalities are ver personable and approachable. As if you were a car centric homie. Being a DIY'er where I can be, seeing bimmer content is very encouraging and exciting! Except the end....
