Thanks a lot. Read an interview with DF where he said McGeoch just wandered into the studio and banged the solo down in one take. And his (DF's) jaw dropped. Not the most difficult solo ever but in the context of the song a piece of brilliance.
Here's the relevant bit from my Magazine biography by Helen Chase: "John Doyle has another memory of the Manor Mobile with it's picturesque but snowy backdrop. He says, " I remember Barry and myself sat in the control room - we'd just come out of a very bleak night, very cold and sobering. Then to be instantly blown away listening to John record the solo for Permafrost was utterly mesmerising - all we could do was gawp. The engineer, tape op and producer were all concentrating and as a result maybe missing the enormity of it. It was possibly one take; I may be wrong about that but it was so unusual, so ethereal. There was utter silence after it, everyone was speechless." I think read in another interview with Colin Thurston that the second guitar in the solo was recorded immediately after, also in one take.
My goodness, i did`nt expect you to play that solo - I was waiting in anticipation if or if you would not do it .. And then as you did, i got that smile on my face.
Are you sure? You still did well in what i hear - I`m aware that this an absolute anti hero solo, that makes the deal even harder - But there are parts when you hear a "synchro dual" that gives me the impression that the notes where parallel to the orig. solo.
Be sure to read Christopher Lowe's comment regarding the recording of the solo. If you mean the effect towards the end of the solo, it was something I turned on to try to mimick the effects on the original, to not much success.
Really cool. I know this is years later, so maybe it’s for someone reading this later - turn up the depth on your modulation a lot, and the mix a good bit. You’ll be way closer to his sound. Notice how distinct the chorus effect is from his actual guitar. It’s because it’s cranked.
I used the supposed same settings McGeoch used, there's a picture of the flanger settings for this song around on the internet. Of course, that's only one part of the equation, there's still every other piece of gear, not to mention the player, which is inimitable. Also, these old flanger units varied a lot, the internal trimpot settings etc. Mine doesn't self-oscillate, as his did. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Signal path is, Yamaha SG3000 - MXR Flanger - EHX Double Muff (for the solo boost) - ProCo You Dirty Rat (for everything overdrive) - EHX Polychorus (for the attempted harmonizer effect on the solo) - EHX Hot Tubes (tube version - leaving it on all the time to get a more classic tube saturation tone) - Roland JC77 (with the chorus on)... and then I made the mistake to go line out from the amp into the computer... in the end it sounded like crap. I kept the stereo signal from the amp line out in the mix, but very quiet, spread LR, and used mostly the sound from the camera. (as in the description)
Nice work on the solo mate. If I remember rightly you have an MXR flanger? Have you seen this then: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20238450/share/Photo%2011-08-2013%2023%2051%2029.jpg
Thanks... was very bitchy to get near-right :) Yes, a vintage unit... I've seen this on the McGeoch facebook page, and it's the exact setting I used :) Still, it doesn't sound as "icy" as the original one... maybe I have to adjust something inside the pedal, or maybe they were just that different from unit to unit...
Guedzilla Which Facebook page is that? I found it on a guitar forum (Offset guitars I think). To my ear it sounds like it needs a bit of treble and compressor/sustain. On the subject of McGeoch gear, you might have some knowledge to contribute to this page: equipboard.com/pros/john-mcgeoch
secallen It's called John McGeoch R.I.P, it's run by his daughter. /groups/14723651138/ Wow, that site looks great, thanks for the link! I'd never seen it before...
Not enough Magazine covers on TH-cam in my opinion. Sounds great. John McGeoch was a genius.
dmj09 Agreed! I might get around to recording some other ones in the future.
+Guedzilla You should do a Guitar Cover of My Tulpa.
+ObeliskL10 Won't promise anything :)
+Guedzilla Great videos, it would be nice a Pil guitar cover from McGeoch period
I don't listen much to PIL, but I've considered trying to learn a song or two… Seattle maybe, but I think I'd need some additional effects.
Excellent work. Really highlights the brilliance of McGeoch's guitar part in this great song. Thanks.
kwtnbe Thanks for watching and writing!
very nice work fella
Thank you!

+Christopher Lowe Thanks for watching. Also, great story, thanks for sharing!

Not nearly as fluent as the original, though… should've practiced a few more times before recording, but I was anxious to get it done :)

It was very close ! Don't diss yourself....Not many would even come close to copying it...
Timeless song for me.
Well done!!!
Thanks!
Fantastic. Really helped me nail that solo. Thank you!!
+Spud O'Doom Thanks! Glad it helped. I reckon I should've practiced the solo a bit more, too loosen up the playing a bit.

Tudo muito bom mas o solo tà do melhor.
Noir Desir Meio desajeitado, não treinei o suficiente antes de gravar :)

But then again, I'm not using the exact same amp or guitar the McGeoch did...
