      Thanks for the video. I disagree with a number of issues, but great you are keeping the issue of presentation in the conversation. In relation to the jacket without the tie with a pocket square, I think you'd look far more put together with a neck tie. Just my opinion, keep up the great work.

    Etiquette consultant here! The elbows rule actually comes from the British navy. The British desperately needed sailors in their navy and if you had your elbows on the table at the pub, it meant you had experience on a ship eating to not let your food slide around. You would get knocked out with a 2x4, then wake up on a boat on the way to Shanghai. They’d say, “Welcome to the British Navy”. Also, if you’re French, elbows are perfectly admissible on the table.

  • @RevJamesCostello
    @RevJamesCostello 5 ปีที่แล้ว +105

    This reminds me of a job interview I went to. We were required to show up in ‘smart dress’. So I show up wearing my best navy suit, black oxfords, white shirt and tie. Everybody else was smart casual. I swear, even the person interviewing me was a little intimidated. ‘Has the out of town boss showed up?’

      That's the price for dressing sharp and dressing good. Sometimes you'll feel overdressed ane the only thing we can do is to get used to it because there will only be some people that take care how to dress.

    • @KarinaSwan
      @KarinaSwan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You made the right choice. I'm in fashion and I can tell you that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. The company can have a casual dress code or smart casual for employees, but it doesn't apply to an interview. Dressing in a suit shows professionalism and respect, which the others obviously didn't. If I were the interviewer, you'll be on top my list already.

      I hate those types of vague descriptions of dress requirement. It's comes off as if HR or the person who came up with the preferred interview standard tried to be smarter than they were.
      I prefer just stating what you require: jacket/no jacket, button down shirt with a collar/no tee shirts, tie/no tie, dress slacks/no jeans/no khaki a.k.a no cotton slacks, dress shoes/no sneakers. For one job interview the HR rep actually stated "please don't show up wearing western boots". I wore my pair of semi brouges chukkas just to push the limits.
      The interview went great, but did not get the job.

      jamepearson Yes, absolutely. If you must be on the phone for any reason, hold it with your non dominant hand. I’ve seen so many different types of uniformed personnel, wether it’s LEO’s or armed security guards at different events & they’ll be on the cell phone with their dominant hand leaving their duty weapon in the gun belt holster completely exposed & up for grabs by a person with ill intent. Common sense & experience in the real world should have these guys hold the damn phone with the off hand that way you are able to react to a situation if need be & you always have your arm at your side by the holstered weapon to prevent someone from trying to grab it. Not that it will happen but it has been documented to occur & the outcome is never good. Good Day to You!

    I was taught different rules. You could put your elbows on the table after you are done eating, but not during eating, because while eating your elbows go to the side so you can reach the food and then you take a lot of space. You could wear hat indoors if it a public space like a shop or something. But not when you enter someone's house.

    Sadly I've lived that "crazy feminist" moment. I do hold doors open for anyone regardless of what sex they are. I've still had some lunatic scream at me for being sexist when I've done held the door for her. I slammed that door in her face. She looked startled but shockingly didn't carry on screaming at me. This was in a place I used to volunteer and it was in front of staff. Someone tried to get me in trouble for it but the staff thankfully took my side as they saw what transpired and they know I hold the door for anyone.
    P.S. Interesting fact, she was a part of a group we had there called the "Womens Group"... We also had a "Mens Group" that the Womens Group tried to have shut down on a few occasions. Despite the fact that that the Mens Group was primarily a help and support group for abuse, health, anxiety, sexuality, grief, addiction and various mental health issues.

    I've always been raised to open the door for people, my grandpa really wanted me to understand being what he considered a gentleman and that was being helpful to people and one way I do that is by holding open doors for people..especially if they have a full armload of food at a take out joint or it's a building that doesn't have automatic doors. I also help people in the grocery store try to find what they are looking for if it's very obvious they don't know where it is and I happen to know, or help them reach something they can't if they are a little short or their arms aren't as long as mine. It's just something I was raised to do and I do it on automatic now. I haven't run into one of the raving feminist that hast a fit when a man opens the door for her..maybe it's cause of the area I live in, I live both in the south and an area where there are a lot of older folks who passed on the same kinda thing my grandpa did.

    I think all these tips are spot on, except for wearing a hat indoors - its a traditional sign of respect to take your hat off indoors. Alot of guys commented with regards to etiquette with women, I basically want to project to the world that I'm well bred & have a little class.

    • @IamChevalier
      @IamChevalier ปีที่แล้ว

      Good for you...
      I was raised the same way.
      One always removes their hat when addressing a lady and removes it when in doors. I would get a more than subtle 'nudge' in the ribs from my Father, Uncle or Grandfather if I didn't remove my hat for either situation - trust me, you didn't forget again.
      Same for holding a door - I sometimes get the odd comment from the latest feminist oddball - Just ignore and say "You're Welcome anyway" loud enough to embarrass the hell out of them - I always get an approving nod or glance from bystanders (male & female).
      Reminds me of the scene in "Cahill, US Marshall" - when John Wayne's 'son' refused to tip his hat to a lady - Wayne basically backhanded him off his horse - saying "Pardon Ma'am, a slight oversight in his upbringing..."
      Am old school - sometimes modern 'ways' are not the best ways.
      It's the little things - that we simply ignore or let go - that snowballs into bigger indiscretions.
      Off my soap box 🙂

    I tend to agree with everything you have just said. I think a suit is a good choice for an interview as long as the fit is right. Nothing worse than if it is either too tight or too big. Generally as long as you look smart and appear to have taken a bit of trouble over your appearance it gives a good first impression.
    I would like your opinion on whether socks should be worn at all times with shoes. Personally I find it a bit off putting if a man doesn't wear socks with leather shoes. OK with trainers. What about patterned socks or should socks always be self coloured to match the colour of the trousers. Best wishes from the UK where most men do not wear pocket squares.

  • @BrianWilkesMedia

    One of the class rules is that "a gentleman does not extend his hand toward a woman" to avoid any association with physical assault or improper touching. A gentleman waits for a woman to extend her hand first so that she controls the encounter. If she extends her hand vertically, she expects it to be shaken as an equal; horizontally, she expects it to be kissed as a superior. The hand kiss, actually ring kiss, is also an acknowledgment of her position and an homage to her husband. This may all seem outdated, especially in egalitarian business-oriented America, but given how easily triggered some women are these days, it's wide to err on the side of caution and formal respect. I can tell you that in portions of society, demonstrating knowledge of these rules and their origins raises one's status immediately. When in doubt, read the room.

    I disagree with the elbows, I think it still applies. I enforce this rule in my house but the reason I was told growing up is that it makes you look lazy and/or uninterested. Typically when my son has his elbows on the table it's exactly that, he's tired so he rests his head on his hand... not in my house, sit up straight and look respectable. However, if you're done eating it's allowed but I still wouldn't let my son rest his head on his hand.

    In the accounting world, brown has been frowned upon historically. Supposedly, it's been thought that brown was an "untrustworthy" color. Consequently, I wore my blue suit to interviews and later broke the "brown" with regularity. They also disliked double breasted suits, and I thought they looked cool on Richard Gere in American Gigolo and James Caan in Thief, so I bought a steel blue/grey glen plaid double breasted suit. No one ever said anything to me about it, so I never gave a damn and I kept doing it. For that reason, the accounting world stuck me as overly picayune. They didn't even like unvented suits and sport coats. Strange!

    The big one that you missed, is to let an older person on public transport have your seat if there is no other seat available. This also goes for pregnant women and the disabled. As for where a woman walks, close to the building, away from the traffic.

    When walking with a woman, it depends if your walking by a road, you should always walk next to the road, so either left side or right depends on where your walking, its to stop the women being pushed in to the gutter, being splashed from puddles by passing vehicles or if a car was to go on the footpath you could safetly get her out of the way. The sword thing also depended if the swordsman was a lefty or a righty.

    One time in a large office with many employees, while approaching a closed door, I let a woman behind me pass first, she didn’t say thank you, smile or nod her head. It felt like I was slapped in the back of the head.
    This woman was gorgeous and knew all the men in the office talked about her.
    A few weeks later, guess who was behind me as I approached the door? It felt amazing entering first and watching the door close behind me.

    My rule on white is that it can be worn when baseball counts. In other words, opening day until the last game of the World Series.
    I learned years ago that I was taken more seriously in a suit. Shopping for my wife's engagement ring, I was shown much better merchandise while wearing a suit than in a sweatshirt, jeans, and a ski jacket.

    There's a right way and a wrong way to put your elbows on the table. If you look like you're trying to protect your plate or you're hunched over your plate trying to shovel as much food as you can that's the wrong way. A casual elbow on the table well you take a listening pose that's okay. Elbows on the table with your head in your hands and crying into your salad... not okay.

    Amen. Absolutely agree. At the end of the day; fashion and a man's clothing choices should be a result of the message they want to send, and to represent "the man you know yourself to be" (i use that line all the time, Antonio!), and it shouldn't be a result of a set of arbitrary or archaic rules.

    Antonio, great video, but would qualify the leathers and metals advice. Mixed leathers and mixed metals (never more than silver and gold together as the deviant object) are OK in casual wear, but not for business or dress. Having a brown belt or suspenders with brown leather tabs with black shoes looks weird and uninformed in a business or suit context. I finally got into brown or tan shoes with grey or navy pants even for daily business wear, but shoes and belt need to match for the office or suited event. (IMHO...) On the rare occasions when I wear suspenders/braces (only with a suit and tie), I also match the leathers.

    Only two occasions when it's okay to put your elbows on the table. One, when you're in a restaurant, the table is wobbling and you don't have a pack of matches to shove under the short leg, your elbows will keep it steady for everyone. Two, cheeseburger.

    “Always” should be thought of as “most of the time”. Of course you don’t have to always wear a tie... but most of the time you will absolutely look sharper with one than without. Most men do not pull off the no tie look well. It just make you look more bland unless you’re wearing an interesting patterned sport coat or something like that.

    Agree with everything except having the female walk on the left side. This rule may not be applicable because we don’t carry swords but with that said while walking the safest place is on the inside. If there was a car accident that happened to jump the curb I’m still in between. I do this with my kids too.
    When we walk wife and kids are always on my inside.

    My take:
    I have always opened doors for everybody. I don't date. I don't think a handshake is a very appropriate greeting for a lady under any circumstances. Elbows on the table doesn't matter. Shirts being tucked or untucked depends on the shirt/situation. The color rules are stupid "secret club" rules that a mature gentlemen would have no interest in. Suits are not always appropriate for interviews/ business meetings. Wear your hat whenever you want. Match anything that looks good together. Ditto.

    Taking your hat off for the national anthem (or other situations) because somehow it symbolizes "respect". Thoughts?

    • @chasatch
      @chasatch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a regular fedora wearer and a U. S. Navy retiree, I have researched this topic but have not achieved clarity. The 2 attached links discuss the issue. My understanding is that during events honoring the U. S. Flag, veterans not in uniform have the option of either rendering a military salute or holding the hat over the left shoulder with the right hand over the heart.
      “The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation’s armed forces,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. “This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation’s flag.”
      The problem seems to be ambiguous wording, specifically the word “may.” The wording does not seem to clearly offer only those two options. The linked newspaper article discusses a Marine who was apparently told at separation to remain covered but to simply “stand at attention.” I have no problem with this, as “standing at attention” is another form of showing respect, whether or not the hat is removed.
      Can veterans wear hats in the National Anthem? - Apr 16, 2014 www.willistonherald.com/opinion/columnists/can-veterans-wear-hats-in-the-national-anthem/article_89130ba0-c57b-11e3-bce8-0019bb2963f4.html

      @JorgePille 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chasatch Well, from the research I've done, removing ones hat became a custom symbolizing respect, or more accurately, meaning no threat, when warriors or knights wore headgear with face masks. The purpose of removing the headgear was to reveal your face and make yourself more vulnerable, thus showing you're not a hostile visitor.
      Therefore, the tradition of removing ones hat to show "respect," no longer makes sense and therefore can be done away with.
