Wonderful to see an expert at work. I went off brandy after it made me very ill on my 21st birthday. Whisky and whiskey are my go-to spirits now... 40 years later! Loving these vids. So glad I found this channel.
I in no way can be considered to know a lot about brandy. I use it in cocktails mainly, but I do have six special drops of which these are two. My main reason for this review was to show how stunning the Australian XO brandy is. There are a number of Australian whiskies but I have yet to come across one that is a) any good and b) priced realistically. But we make damn fine brandy!!!
This is a question that I cannot answer. As I live in Australia I know little about American liquor outlets other than those in Terre Haute where my family lives, and then I have only gone looking for American booze, rather than Australian.
@@NivlasNightcapNotes I was hopeful because you raved about your Cognac and I wanted to check it out.. I'll see if I can contact them through their website.. By the time they add all the tariffs and taxes it'll probably cost $300 U.S. dollars .. thanks for the response !
Excellent and very helpful video. I am new to the world of brandy and you explained all I needed to know to get stared…even how to sip it like a pro. Thank you so much for making this video.
I am happy you found it useful. I only dabble with brandy. My collection of spirits is mostly whisky, but there are times when a beautiful brandy or cognac hits the right spot. Thanks for the comment!
Well I don't know about any price. I know what I like and try to pass that on to other people. I also have been known to rate some whiskies quite poorly, but not many of them!
I used to be a smoker. Fortunately I gave it up as I could not afford to now! However I imagine the XO would go really well with a cigar, or a bowl of pipe tobacco!
We have accidentally let this channel lapse! Now the COVID restrictions are lifting in Tasmania, we may be able to start back up. Thanks for the comment Mike!
Seems i found a fellow connoisseur, ive been drinking an Australian brand of Brandy called Black Bottle, Grape distilled 2 years in oak its smooth, tasty with vanilla hints & smells amazing, why is it that i can drink 350mls of straight Brandy and feel absolutely fine, but if i drink 200mls of whiskey im head first in the toilet regretting my decisions? Is it because Brandy isnt as harsh on the body/liver as Brandy? Brandy really is the medicine people make it out to be, i dont drink often but when i do Brandy really hits the spot
To the best of my knowledge, cognacs are all natural, most of the colour coming from the barrel. However some distillers might be more underhanded, but I am sure the main players would not. Even in Scotland some distillers add colouring, mainly using caramel.
Cognacs regularly use colouring and flavouring- the big names especially. It's not considered a bad thing in Cognac making per se. That's another difference with Armagnac, in which most producers would not do this
A very interesting question. Spirits change very little in the bottle provided the seal is tight. With the addition of air as the spirit level goes down very minor changes are made, but not enough to affect the overall flavour and taste. The bottom line I believe is that brandy and whisky do not change in the bottle.
If you care to have a look at Nightcap Note #68, I compare three brandies, one of which is an Armagnac. At the time of filming #11 I did not own an Armagnac. All of this makes for interesting research. Thanks for the comment.
I am not an expert on brandy, but by my understanding, Napoleon Brandy is a recently introduced rating. XO used to mean at least 6 years old but that has now been boosted to 10 years, and Napoleon has taken over the 6yo rating. The French are masters of making their own rules!
Hello everybody, i had a bottle of Cardenal Mendoza brandy de lujo and i very liked it, i also have a bottle of Fine Champagne Fussigny cognac and i like it but Cardenal Mendoza is better
As you are probably aware, whisky is my main area of research. I have six brandies, four of which are cognacs. The ones you mention here I have never heard of or seen on bottle shop shelves. There is a whole world of research that could be done on these, but I don't have the disposable income to branch out too far.
Even though I did this review, and I like nice brandy, it is not my area of expertise. Whisky is my passion, but I am interested in lots of different flavours. Never seen or had an Armenian Brandy, but I will keep my eyes out for it!
@@NivlasNightcapNotes thank you for your response, Armenian Brandy is world class, has won many awards...I believe the oldest wine distillery ever found was in armenia as well! Cheers.
I would just purchase 2 bottles of vsop for an extra $20 rather an aussie copy at $100 but everyone to their own choice good video keep it up santa lol
For me nothing can ever be better than original French brandy, cognac, almanac. Australian brandy is a joke, 😂, it's like the French brewing Aussie beer and claiming it's better than the original Aussie brew.

Great descriptions!

Great video mate. I am indeed having a St agnes XO with a cigar (PL picadores) and it is a lovely combo!

Ahhh, but have you tried these with a fine sativa?! 😆
Lovely review Neville, thank you!
Thanks for the comment. Brandy/Cognac is not my main field of "research", but these are two damn fine drops!
Great information! Cheers!
Thanks James - glad it was useful to you
this was just delightful
Thank you for the feedback. Hope you get a chance to try some nice brandy!
I drink a ton of Brandy, in a shot glass. Thank God for Paul mason and E&J for keeping my bank account in the positive.
I have a handful of brandies, but only drink them on rare occasions. Too many purchases does challenge the bank account!
Having it now

Cognac has a neighboring provence that also makes a fine quality brandy called Almenac.
I do have an armagnac but it is not as good as the cognac. It is very drinkable.
i read that cognacs have aditives like colour, sugar and sometimes Boise.Do Brandy's have these polutants?

@@aubs400 Armagnac is the best thing in the world, it's even funnier that almost nobody in the world knows it even exists
What do you think of Courvoisier XO vs. St Agnes ?
Courvoisier exudes class. St Agnes exudes spirit. St Agnes is good for a Brandy Alexander, but not in the same class for drinking neat.
Does brandy ,whiskey age in the bottle

As someone all but totally new to alcohol, i can say with authority that Courvossier VS smells like turpentine-based rocket fuel.

The thing is the Aussie brandy is an XO, at least 18 years old. That extra time in barrel works just as well for brandy as it does for whisky!

Slurping isn’t a pleasant sound
May not sound pleasant, but certainly mixes in the air with the spirit to open up the flavour.
