      You can get carbon grip paste from (pedal) bike shops - it's normally used when inserting a carbon seatpost... you don't want to exceed torque settings as you risk fracturing the post but, due to the smooth finish of the carbon post, the posts can slip into the frame as you ride. Grip paste stops this.
      I'd take the fixing bolt out one side at a time, make sure there is fresh loctitie on it but also add a dab of grip paste around the flanges/interface area then torque back up.

      Here in the USA, you'll never catch me on a hi-way or city street. The only roads I ride, are the ones on the map with no names or route numbers. Just the narrow squiggly gray lines on the paper map. I especially love the roads that hug a river bank. My own personal roller coaster!
      Might be time for me to pull the trigger on my last road machine, & Guzzi is at the top of the list right now.

    The name 'Stone' is derived from a little known miracle. In April 1965 a stone tablet fell from the sky and landed in the garden at the Vatican. It had indecipherable inscriptions and figures on it. One of the monks had a brother in Mondelo who worked at Moto Guzzi. He showed the tablet to his brother and the brother instantly recognized detailed plans for a motorcycle. This was considered a miracle as he was the only person who could understand the inscriptions.
    He went to work and built the first V7 from these inscribed plans. Behold the world's most perfect motorcycle. This is how the V7 Stone got it's name. The design that was inscribed in stone by God himself.

    Had mine for 6 weeks and I just spent the €200 on the standard Guzzi screen (only option available at the moment where I live.) It's transformed the bike. I'm not surprised Saffron hasn't got on with it if she's been battering the motorways with no wind protection or luggage capacity. I've gone from more or less enjoying riding it to actually looking forward to going to work when it's only 3 degrees outside!

      I have a Dart Marlin on mine. It maybe, if, but, adds just 5mph to where the wind buffeting becomes tiring. Mainly it disguises the Topolino ears.
      The only way to avoid that fatigue on a naked bike is to stick to 70-ish on a motorway (I know, eat lunch, read newspaper). Motorways are really really really really boring and best avoided. Sometimes motorways cannot be avoided, they are for long journeys and there is a temptation to open the throttle (watch the birdie, cameras). But as air resistance rises with the square of velocity, that constant wind pressure can wear you out after a while.
      You want a Goldwing for what, it's got heaters too.

    I think by calling the Stone version "bog standard" is missing the point somewhat. It's the modern retro, with LCD clocks and easy to clean mag wheels, perfect for a city commuter who wants to look cool and have little maintenance.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're not ordinary mag wheels neither. Moto Guzzi designed them to flex and have the feel of spokes. Spoke do still have a more comfortable ride and are less liable to breaking when hit hard, kerbs and potholes can break an alloy (which is why off-road is steel rim and spokes only).

    • @savage22bolt32
      @savage22bolt32 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffslade1892 interesting that you mention the engineered in flex.
      I thought the design looked weak, because the spokes are not attached radially to the hub & rim.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@savage22bolt32 I noticed that on the new one. The older design is radial but the alloy "spokes" have a bend in them. I gather they use an aircraft grade alloy that can flex a bit and does not fatigue as quickly as normal alloy wheels do. Even so, alloys are not for off-road use.

    4500 miles on my 2021 v7. No reliability issues. It is hard to get in neutral when stopped. Gearbox is clunky but just a Characteristic inherent of the bike style. A lot of other riders have found the 850 lacks the charisma of the earlier models. It has more power but the peak torque is now at 5000rpm, not down at 2800rpm on the V7ii - 50hp at 6200 and 60 Nm at 2800 giving it a practically flat power band from below 2500 to the rev limiter somewhere around 7400rpm, a spread of about 5000rpm. With the 850 they have had to work at the gears a lot more. The peak torque on the V7 III was also up at 4900rpm and the rev limiter lower, which required more rider input too. The V7ii had a fair bit of power above the peak power compared to the V7 III which nose-dived nothing left and consequently has a higher top speed. A similar problem which has been addressed between the old Triumph Tigger and the new model, a lot more low-down torque. Despite only having half the ponies I found the V7ii could produce a significantly faster pace than the older fistful of nothing Tigger 800 which needed a lot of effort to keep it on the boil, handled like a barn door too. Having the power there under your right hand all the time produces a very relaxed ride. Having that effortless power means that instead of dropping two cogs to overtake a car, on the V7ii it can be change up then open throttle. A car is not competition, it is a mobile chicane.
    Sometimes less is more.
    The MGCT can be turned off. If you do that you notice it is working, without putting the warning lamp on which it will only do if it has lost the plot (beware of Pirelli tyres doing that). It is very unobtrusive and gradual but effective on wet bends.
    If the headlamp moves, put an Allen key in the bolt and tighten it.

    • @savage22bolt32
      @savage22bolt32 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff,you sound like you have a good handle on the information I'm looking for.
      The V7ii with the 2800 rpm peak torque is the one I want.
      Do you know what model years I should be looking for?
      (I assume the V7 III is a newer bike)
      PS 98% of my riding is on twisty, hilly back roads in NE corner of USA.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@savage22bolt32 seriously, you do not have twisty back roads in the USA. English lanes are maybe 9 ft wide with grass growing up the middle and tight bends. Lane literally means cow-path, designed by cattle. What you have are like our rural B-roads, really nice on a Guzzi, moderately fast sweeps. But if they've got straight bits they're probably roman and about as flat and level as a fairground ride. The little lanes are best left to the specialist turns on a sixpence Enfield 500 - it's actually a "heavy trials bike" (and won a lot of prizes at that). We've had american guests here who have been shocked at how twisty our main A-rods are, I've no idea what they'd make of our D-road mouse tracks ;)
      The V7ii was 2015 and 2016 but you may find 2014 and 2017.
      The V7III was 2017 on. The V7 IV (850) 2021-on.
      I had wanted a Guzzi since the 80s. So I test rode both at the same dealer in 2018 - a used V7ii and a brand new V7 III. Neither lacked power. Both were comfortable and easy to ride, no vices. But I had to make a choice. The V7 III didn't like to potter at town stop-start traffic speeds as nicely as the V7ii. Although they will bumble along at low revs, the V7 motor is quite revvy. Whereas the V7ii would happily go clean over the peak power revs, with the V7 III it was like hitting a wall; more important in intermediate gears. I later learnt to use the torque by changing up before overtaking a car (aka mobile chicane).
      I prefer a relaxed ride, I don't want to think too much about operating the motorbike - the Tigger 800 was constant gear changes. I like to enjoy the scenery not study the tarmac. It's very easy to go too fast and get a ticket, or an ambulance. Hence partly my preference to get off the main roads and out of the heavy traffic, they're not a lot of fun - which is what a bike is for..
      Because the motor will happily run at any revs it really does need a tacho to remind you to change up. The gear change indicator on the V7 III was nice but I can count up to six.

      @@jeffslade1892 Jeff, thank you for the very thoughtful reply.
      My daughter married a British lad from Sompton/Worthing. When I flew over to meet the in-laws, they never took me on any of these narrow lanes. I will scold them for that lapse!
      I found a 2016 V7 about an hour drive away, so l will look at that.
      Currently, I'm riding a CRF250L, and after riding a couple of hours, my left hand cramps up from all the shifting.
      I'm not a speed demon, my most enjoyable miles are lugging an engine & putting around, especially in October when the leaves are changing color.
      I can't wait until my next trip across the pond. Planning to rent a bike and spend time out on my own. One thing on my bucket list is to hit some of Ireland, and ride the TT circuit on Isle of Mann.

That's also what you need on a bike driven by you not a computer. How many times have you had to restart your laptop or phone to get it working properly? How many chances would get to restart the ECU in a 100 mph or 160 km/h? Some new trackdays heroes think you always needs 100 % throttle and avoid crashing only because their ECU were smarter than they are! Rider aids could be useful, but knowing and practicing throttle control and practicing braking from high speeds are still essential!

    Infamous Cam Issues.
    Had Guzzi's all my life; since 1978. Bought a 1200 Stelvio, (6000 miles) cam's went! Piagio (6 month wait for parts) replaced them under recall but charged me for labour, oil and filter.
    At 8000 miles, cam's went again!! Piago said: "another 6 month wait, and another £380 labour, oil, filter".
    No chance of purchase refund as others also attempted, by taking Guzzi to court.

    Currently own a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 cc that I have had for 20 years. Once took me 120 miles on one cylinder at highway speed when one spark plug wire crapped out on a Sunday morning with no shops open. At almost 70 years old it has gotten too heavy to maneuver in and out of situations. Purchased a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone at more than 100 pounds less wet weight. Absolutely love it. Will stay with Moto Guzzi for the rest of my riding life. I have owned BMW, Laverda, Ducati, Moto Morini, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, Indian, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Cagiva and loved them all for different reasons, but the fact that I can physically handle the weight of a bike that will cruise (illegally) at 85-90 mph for as long as I need, looks good, is reliable and affordable and unique, why shop anywhere else?- -Mike Battle

    I tried the V7 850 in May. And I felt in love with it!
    The first 2 minutes were horrible. It needs to get warm to be perfect.
    This bike is alive, it shakes smoothly, vibrates a bit, sounds good, feels friendly, behaves nicely, looks great...
    For a better retro look, see the V7 Special, with analog clocks, chrome and spoke wheels. My favorite. And certainly my next bike.

    Personally after 55 years of riding I find this bike very engaging in a way that my previous excellent CB500F wasn't. It's all so personal. I had a BMW RT-80 for ten years, so I bonded with the V7 almost immediately. My knees are especially thankful for the shaft drive.

    Good real life review. Whether or not you 'gel' with a bike is a really subjective thing. Saffron obviously enjoys her Harley, which is an extremely characterful bike, so it's no surprise that the Guzzi may not appeal to her quite as much.

    • @ws8080
      @ws8080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would never enjoy a Harley (particularly the one she rides), so Saffron's view would not mesh with me or be relevant to me. Seems like the Guzzi would be heaven in town as she somewhat pointed out at the beginning. I have to say that so far, out of all the TH-cam channels that MCN has the reviews that seem least relatable period.

      If you like chrome finish, spoke wheels, don't mind tubed tires, a halogen headlamp and an extra 10 kg or so compared to Stone - go for Special :) Special also comes with an analogue duo cluster, that for some people is more than necessary.

    Yesterday I went out on my 2020 V7 Stone S and my dad's new W800. When you compare those 2 bikes together the guzzi drips character over the W800 but as far as a harley like she rides..? Maybe she likes a lot more shaking and weight to her bikes. I like to think of these bikes as more refined but funky sportsters. The more you refine them the less people are going to get the guzzi experience I feel like..

  • @frankpinion4937

    I've ridden the special & it has unmistakable character due to the transverse V twin engine-the twist to the right when you open the throttle & minor vibes through the handlebars. The issue with the light seems odd & I can only think that they haven't done a proper PD on it. It is a refined version of the previous model & due to the 853 cc it has more hp up from 52hp to 65hp & more torque. I personally thought that all the refinements they made have improved it. Certainly the lighter clutch has made a big difference compared to my '07 Breva 750. Also the 18" front wheel has better rolling ability on rougher ground. I believe they also put the air cleaner under the seat from between the cylinders so much easier to service. The stone & centanario have LED day run lamp, digital dash & alloy wheels whereas the special get's spoked wheel's, analogue/digital instruments including a separate rev counter but standard lighting. Fabulous bike to ride.

  • @allans7281

    They keep calling the lateral vibration as character. Personally I don’t like to be rocked side to side. V 7 is beautiful gorgeous tank the riding triangle is a little more cramped than the Bonneville. I chose the 2022 Bonneville T 100. Just feels better in the saddle and impressive comfort for all day riding.

  • @KavaKavana
    @KavaKavana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The elephant in the room..the angle on the headstock isn’t steep enough and the non adjustable front forks are too long. Also the sectional exhaust is unappealing. This matte finish is getting stale too. Spokes? That’d be appreciated but it’s still a very beautiful bike. I know the v7 special addresses many of these things but there’s still too many things that need changing and their aftermarket is very limited and extremely expensive. Still kinda love it. It’s a love/darn it needs a little too much type thing.
