In defining any term to a BEGINNER, such as, say, 'Adi tala' , it is not a polite to use other equally strange words, such as, 'Akshara' 'Janti Varasai', and so on, before telling him what those words themselves in turn mean! Reflect on this as a teaching rule in general, if you may. Further, have you considered the possibility that all your learners are not necessarily tamil-speaking? 'Carnatic Classical' music is not tamil classical music. In fact, its originator was Venkatamukhi, a Telugu visionary, who lived in times centuries before any likes of Dikshitar were even predicted to be born! And, lest you forget, the first lesson in Geetha, "Lambodara Lakumikara" was composed by Purandara dasa, a saint from today's Karnataka. Venkakamukhi did not call the first of the beat pattern "Adi talam" but "Adi tala". Equally truly, Purandara dasa did not mispronounce "Geetha" as "Geetham"!
The word "Carnatic" was a region enveloping today's Andhra, Telengana, Kerala, Karnataka, and ALSO Tamilnadu. The teacher may consider tuning his pronunciation with due respect to history. CRRao, 80 years by age, 1 year old as student of Carnatic music [crrao111@gmail.com]
