My heart skipped a beat...selling Sandflea??????? It cannot be true! Then I heard, ' we are going to buy a bigger boat'........that was relief! When you actually go to sell it, one of the big selling features especially with you being in the Caribbean and Banhamas a lot is all those opening ports that you have with screens! Oh....I would be glad to adopt Molly...LOL! She would get an immediate promotion from Swab to First Mate with of course a pay raise. So Molly....hit dad up for an increase in your allowance....ha ha ha! Love your videos hope you guys are around for a long time to come! You are true ambassadors to the sailing community!

I could use a crew, would buy Molly if you were willing to sell. I'd buy the boat, but someone would have to buy my MacGregor powersailor before I'd have a big enough stack of cash to give you. All the upgrades and restoration you've done makes your boat a really sweet deal. I've bought old, beat up boats because they were cheap, then spent more than you are asking to restore them. Yes, better separation of our sleeping spaces is becoming more and more important. That, and also just the need for more space in order to lengthen our trips and allow for more gear - like our SCUBA gear. ;)

Way back when we were a 2 young child family and my dad spent 2 years and almost a divorce rebuilding his first boat 24' oa ( as in sawed the deck off!) ,I had a nice little v berth with toilet between ..... then along came a brother....... so my dad built a sort of cot from canvas and 2 poles over the toilet for the 'baby' ......but the writing was on the wall and 3 years later he was looking for a new boat......... I've been in this boat (virtually) so many times I feel like I know it pretty well. GLWTS, She has given you many, many great miles of wonderful memories. I am sure teenage Molly would like her own hull, so I would look for a Catamaran. :-) PS - I would adopt Molly in a heartbeat, even for just a little while. She is an angel.
Do you guys already have an idea in mind of what you will be looking for in your next boat? Another monohull? Catamaran? What's the max length you are thinking of going for? Will you consider a boat that requires some refitting or do you want sail away ready? Any particular brand of sailboat you favor over others? There are so many variables. Most likely monohull. 37-40ft in length, most likely. I don't mind a project boat, as long as we can use it while we work on it. Concerning brands, we'll likely be looking at the Pearson/Catalina level of boats and not the Hinkley/Hans Christian/Gozzard level. One of the main one's I'm curious about is the Endeavour 38. Really like Valiant 40s, but price is likely out of our range for most of them. To me, what's more important than brand, when dealing with old boats, is how well they've been maintained - still a good pedigree also goes a long way.

I like to do searches of different boats (specifically bluewater capable) even though I'm not currently in a position to purchase one to replace my boat -although plans could change if the right one came available...lol! Looks like the Endeavour 38s have really good engine access and beautiful interiors with adequate space. Yes indeed. We found most sellers tended to ask 2-3 times what their boat is worth and we were extremely frustrated by this trend while we were searching for our boat. 20k sounds low because it is, especially considering the TENS OF THOUSANDS in equipment, maintenance, and overhead that has gone into our boat, BUT 20k is a realistic number based on the boat's true & depreciated value. I think the mistake most sellers make is that they don't depreciate the costs involved... and boats depreciate RAPIDLY. It hurts to be that honest with yourself about it, but we think that in doing so we're setting ourselves up for SUCCESS by pricing the boat for a quick sale that will allow us to get a jump on finding the next boat sooner than later.
Sailboat Story y’all have anything in mind? You guys gonna rent something when you return if you do sell? We had felt displaced after bringing Norna to Maine, and were super grateful to friends and family for letting us housesit while we finished fixing up the VW bus. It was taxing, however, mentally, and brought on a lot of hard work. Glad to have the majority of it done now. We will be launching Norna this summer, leaving her in a barn in Maine and returning for the winter to our Pacific Seacraft, which will be ready for us to live on (on the hard) when we return. Still a lot to do, and a lot of money to spend, so yeah, $20k will sell quick!

Multi-Hull time! Or moving up to a bluewater cruiser! Keep in mind the 40' issue in the Bahamas, Florida and the Carib... Sometimes they gotta anchor way out cause the mooring are for 40' and less. Price seems a bit lite though... See them selling for 25-28k in the Chessie, well asking price anyways. That's superbly equipped! At 20ish it won't last long. Oceanis 390 or 393... Would be sweet. 3 cabins too.
HA. I think we'll be looking at monos just because there are so many of them out there. The 40' wouldn't be an issue for us in the Bahamas. We're never tied to a mooring. :) Personally, I don't trust them. Yep, the price is indeed light - but we want to price it accurately instead of padding it. At least 2 cabins is a must, 3 would be even better. Probably looking at center cockpits in the 37-40ft range.
@@Sailboatstory I saw and read stories of the inner moorings at Hopetown breaking just this past winter (that one I'd stay away from). A CC in that range would give you guys the "honeymoon" cabin in the back with a second complete head. Stay away or be very picky with the Irwins in that size. They got everything going for them but they were built quickly. Some are great, some not so. But priced perfectly. I'm sure we'll see some video's on this... ; )

Off topic but, you guys should buy your next boat far far away and see some different sailing grounds. Buy up in Washington state and check out the Canadian west coast. Can't swim as much but mind blowingly beautiful.
We've done a lot of talking about trying to buy one in Canada. Might snag a cheap RV and spend some time searching around up North to leverage the exchange rate.
Sailboat Story way too expensive up here Ben. Most people buy their sailboats in Washington and pay the nasty amounts of taxes and then they are still cheaper than buying here.
Ironic. My family and I have spent the last who-knows-how-many-months watching ALL of your videos from the very first all the way to the most recent (this one) and we've finally made it. Ironic because it would be the episode where you're announcing intentions to sell the boat (we know you mentioned selling it prior to the season last year, but nothing came of that). Surprised you will not be asking more, guess you are trying to pass along a great boat a great deal. It's a great boat and a DEAL at 20k, for sure. I'd rather take a fair price and move on quickly. Whats more important to me is to keep moving and not get stalled on waiting months or years for a boat to sell that has been priced wrong. I see it all the time, even the overwhelming majority of the time, unfortunately.
Someone is going to get a very good boat at a reasonable price. Turnkey and ready for cruising. I own the same boat and can attest that she is rock solid in a seaway and very forgiving. Shallow draft (4.5’) but with the modified fin keel she can be easily balanced to hold her course. The interior is surprisingly large. We only do a night or two with the whole family but we sleep five people and a small dog with ease. Ben and company have obviously done a wonderful job of maintaining and improving their boat. The lucky buyer will be getting a known quantity. Other than many happy hours of entertainment I have not been compensated for this endorsement.
I really like how you used all the proper nautical terms for the description of Your Vessel so many people will call it a kitchen call a bathroom and so many other incorrect terms. A couple of things that I was hoping to hear in this description was the beam the draft type of keel type of shaft support system and rudder. I'm also very interested on your thoughts of your future vessel are you considering a catamaran. I'm looking at the leopard 38 shaft drive if I could afford one of the other larger leopards with a shaft drive I'd get that but well that's about all I can afford. love the videos can't wait to see your thoughts on your new vessel
Well thanks Kevin. I figured all the standard dimensional info could be looked up on sailboatdata.com. No, we're not seriously considering a catamaran. It's a matter of needing to stretch our budget as far as it can go, and that's easier done in the vast, depressed monohull market rather than the tight, active catamaran market. There are certainly come things we like about a catamaran, but I think we'll end up with a better boat overall by putting our dollars into a well below market mono. A 38' Leopard does sound awesome though.
Hi guys, good luck with the sale of Sandflea. I have enjoyed your videos, especially the early ones of the repairs and outfitting the boat for cruising so now I'm curious about your next move, will you be looking for something that it's ready to sail or a boat that needs some TLC?
Both. I don’t mind having to work on the boat, but I’d like to be able to use it while we work on it. Basically, I want the stuff the counts to be useable - rigging, sails, motor, rudder, hull, etc. it can be rough around the edges, sure. It can be very systems basic. Nothing fancy.
Not too surprised by your decision to "boat up" by a few extra feet. Molly is indeed growing up and she will want more privacy soon. Her space has been fine but as she gets older & bigger, more room is a priority. San Flea is a beautiful boat and your efforts will not go unnoticed by potential buyers.
When I sell things, I price them aggressively. What happens is that I don't waste time, money, energy, and overhead baby-sitting the "sale". There's a lot to be said about what's actually SAVED by "losing" a little off the top by pricing low. IMO what seems low only feels that way because most boats are listed at drastically inflated prices to begin with.
@@Sailboatstory I have a Tartan 34 so I dont need a boat. If I did, I would pay you the 20 and come to the Bahamas, ask you to just leave everything, and fly you home. (the girls too, I have one of my own). I used to do the same thing but everyone wants to get at least a 30 percent discount off the asking price, especially with boats and cars. But I am sure you know what you are doing. Watching your videos I can see that you have a good boat easily worth more.... As long as Sailboat Story has a sailboat in it, no matter which one, I will keep watching!!!!

Love your channel. Ben I have a good lead on a 1987 Bristol 43.3 centercockpit for sale. I am not connected to the owner or the broker. However I have used the broker to purchase our current boat and they are great to work with. I have also had an 1985 Bristol 35.5 and they are very well built boats, great to sail really beautiful. The 43.3 is an awesome design you will have all the room your family deserves. The aft stateroom has a for and aft centerline queen berth. Please google the Bristol 43.3 it is a centerboard design so draft is reasonable. These boats normally sell for 100k plus. I am pretty sure you could score this one for 50k or less, it has been on the market for quite a while. Yes it needs some work but when you guys make it right you will never need a bigger boat. I would buy it myself but I am too old and have already gone to the dark side and own a nice trawler. If it is still on the market by September you might get it for 30. Our boat is a 1996 36' Island Gypsy, a few years ago I bought it for less than half the asking 25K. It is a great boat and we enjoy it. Take care JP PS the Bristol is close to a custom build--no inner liner all internal woodwork done in place. The teak and holly sole is solid wood not ply. Our Bristol interior was a work of Art.
I was going to ask the same question, but then he flashed the price on the screen. With an excellent swabbie like Molly the opening bid would have been $1,020,000 or like @Larry Gee pointed out $1,030,000 with the dingy. So I think it is safe to assume the answer is ........NO!
I think 20K is very low. A better price, to me, seems like at least 30K would be more realistic. I imagine whatever you look at will be a fixer upper with center cockpit. Look at what Spoondrifters are doing on their channel.
Compared to the asking price of other boats, yes, it's waaaaay low. Trouble with most other boats is that they sell for waaaaaay less than asking. We're just getting ahead of that process by pricing it right out of the gate.
I don't think I'd want the responsibility of maintaining something that was brand new. There's something nice about having a boat that's a bit "broken in".

Selling our boat (Salty Lass) would break our hearts, but hopefully you will get over selling yours and Sandflea 2 will keep the adventures rolling.

Way back when we were a 2 young child family and my dad spent 2 years and almost a divorce rebuilding his first boat 24' oa ( as in sawed the deck off!) ,I had a nice little v berth with toilet between ..... then along came a brother....... so my dad built a sort of cot from canvas and 2 poles over the toilet for the 'baby' ......but the writing was on the wall and 3 years later he was looking for a new boat.........

I've been in this boat (virtually) so many times I feel like I know it pretty well. GLWTS, She has given you many, many great miles of wonderful memories. I am sure teenage Molly would like her own hull, so I would look for a Catamaran. :-)
PS - I would adopt Molly in a heartbeat, even for just a little while. She is an angel.

Do you guys already have an idea in mind of what you will be looking for in your next boat? Another monohull? Catamaran? What's the max length you are thinking of going for? Will you consider a boat that requires some refitting or do you want sail away ready? Any particular brand of sailboat you favor over others? Good luck and looking forward to seeing the future vlogs of your boat search, purchase and possible repairs.
There are so many variables. Most likely monohull. 37-40ft in length, most likely. I don't mind a project boat, as long as we can use it while we work on it. Concerning brands, we'll likely be looking at the Pearson/Catalina level of boats and not the Hinkley/Hans Christian/Gozzard level. One of the main one's I'm curious about is the Endeavour 38. Really like Valiant 40s, but price is likely out of our range for most of them. To me, what's more important than brand, when dealing with old boats, is how well they've been maintained - still a good pedigree also goes a long way.
Valid points and solid thinking. I like to do searches of different boats (specifically bluewater capable) even though I'm not currently in a position to purchase one to replace my boat -although plans could change if the right one came available...lol! Looks like the Endeavour 38s have really good engine access and beautiful interiors with adequate space. Yes indeed. We found most sellers tended to ask 2-3 times what their boat is worth and we were extremely frustrated by this trend while we were searching for our boat. 20k sounds low because it is, especially considering the TENS OF THOUSANDS in equipment, maintenance, and overhead that has gone into our boat, BUT 20k is a realistic number based on the boat's true & depreciated value. I think the mistake most sellers make is that they don't depreciate the costs involved... and boats depreciate RAPIDLY. It hurts to be that honest with yourself about it, but we think that in doing so we're setting ourselves up for SUCCESS by pricing the boat for a quick sale that will allow us to get a jump on finding the next boat sooner than later.
Sailboat Story y’all have anything in mind? You guys gonna rent something when you return if you do sell? We had felt displaced after bringing Norna to Maine, and were super grateful to friends and family for letting us housesit while we finished fixing up the VW bus. It was taxing, however, mentally, and brought on a lot of hard work. Glad to have the majority of it done now. We will be launching Norna this summer, leaving her in a barn in Maine and returning for the winter to our Pacific Seacraft, which will be ready for us to live on (on the hard) when we return. Still a lot to do, and a lot of money to spend, so yeah, $20k will sell quick!

Multi-Hull time! Or moving up to a bluewater cruiser! Keep in mind the 40' issue in the Bahamas, Florida and the Carib... Sometimes they gotta anchor way out cause the mooring are for 40' and less.
Price seems a bit lite though... See them selling for 25-28k in the Chessie, well asking price anyways. That's superbly equipped! At 20ish it won't last long.

The 40' wouldn't be an issue for us in the Bahamas. We're never tied to a mooring. :) Personally, I don't trust them.

@@Sailboatstory I saw and read stories of the inner moorings at Hopetown breaking just this past winter (that one I'd stay away from). A CC in that range would give you guys the "honeymoon" cabin in the back with a second complete head. Stay away or be very picky with the Irwins in that size. They got everything going for them but they were built quickly. Some are great, some not so. But priced perfectly.

Off topic but, you guys should buy your next boat far far away and see some different sailing grounds. Buy up in Washington state and check out the Canadian west coast. Can't swim as much but mind blowingly beautiful.
We've done a lot of talking about trying to buy one in Canada.
Might snag a cheap RV and spend some time searching around up North to leverage the exchange rate.
Sailboat Story way too expensive up here Ben. Most people buy their sailboats in Washington and pay the nasty amounts of taxes and then they are still cheaper than buying here.

It's a great boat and a DEAL at 20k, for sure. I'd rather take a fair price and move on quickly.
Whats more important to me is to keep moving and not get stalled on waiting months or years for a boat to sell that has been priced wrong. I see it all the time, even the overwhelming majority of the time, unfortunately.
Someone is going to get a very good boat at a reasonable price. Turnkey and ready for cruising. I own the same boat and can attest that she is rock solid in a seaway and very forgiving. Shallow draft (4.5’) but with the modified fin keel she can be easily balanced to hold her course. The interior is surprisingly large. We only do a night or two with the whole family but we sleep five people and a small dog with ease. Ben and company have obviously done a wonderful job of maintaining and improving their boat. The lucky buyer will be getting a known quantity. Other than many happy hours of entertainment I have not been compensated for this endorsement.

I really like how you used all the proper nautical terms for the description of Your Vessel so many people will call it a kitchen call a bathroom and so many other incorrect terms. A couple of things that I was hoping to hear in this description was the beam the draft type of keel type of shaft support system and rudder. I'm also very interested on your thoughts of your future vessel are you considering a catamaran. I'm looking at the leopard 38 shaft drive if I could afford one of the other larger leopards with a shaft drive I'd get that but well that's about all I can afford. love the videos can't wait to see your thoughts on your new vessel

No, we're not seriously considering a catamaran.
It's a matter of needing to stretch our budget as far as it can go, and that's easier done in the vast, depressed monohull market rather than the tight, active catamaran market.
There are certainly come things we like about a catamaran, but I think we'll end up with a better boat overall by putting our dollars into a well below market mono.
A 38' Leopard does sound awesome though.

Hi guys, good luck with the sale of Sandflea. I have enjoyed your videos, especially the early ones of the repairs and outfitting the boat for cruising so now I'm curious about your next move, will you be looking for something that it's ready to sail or a boat that needs some TLC?
Both. I don’t mind having to work on the boat, but I’d like to be able to use it while we work on it. Basically, I want the stuff the counts to be useable - rigging, sails, motor, rudder, hull, etc. it can be rough around the edges, sure. It can be very systems basic. Nothing fancy.
Shes' clean vessel captain well maintained by top notch mates !

Nope. We ditched 2 rusted ac units that came in it. We don’t miss ac when at anchor, but it dies get hot at a marina.

When I sell things, I price them aggressively.
What happens is that I don't waste time, money, energy, and overhead baby-sitting the "sale".
There's a lot to be said about what's actually SAVED by "losing" a little off the top by pricing low.
IMO what seems low only feels that way because most boats are listed at drastically inflated prices to begin with.

(the girls too, I have one of my own). I used to do the same thing but everyone wants to get at least a 30 percent discount off the asking price, especially with boats and cars. But I am sure you know what you are doing. Watching your videos I can see that you have a good boat easily worth more.... As long as Sailboat Story has a sailboat in it, no matter which one, I will keep watching!!!!

Love your channel. Ben I have a good lead on a 1987 Bristol 43.3 centercockpit for sale. I am not connected to the owner or the broker. However I have used the broker to purchase our current boat and they are great to work with. I have also had an 1985 Bristol 35.5 and they are very well built boats, great to sail really beautiful. The 43.3 is an awesome design you will have all the room your family deserves. The aft stateroom has a for and aft centerline queen berth. Please google the Bristol 43.3 it is a centerboard design so draft is reasonable. These boats normally sell for 100k plus. I am pretty sure you could score this one for 50k or less, it has been on the market for quite a while. Yes it needs some work but when you guys make it right you will never need a bigger boat. I would buy it myself but I am too old and have already gone to the dark side and own a nice trawler. Message me if you want to more details I don't want to add too much here or someone else might scoop it up. John

If it is still on the market by September you might get it for 30. Our boat is a 1996 36' Island Gypsy, a few years ago I bought it for less than half the asking 25K. It is a great boat and we enjoy it. Take care JP PS the Bristol is close to a custom build--no inner liner all internal woodwork done in place. The teak and holly sole is solid wood not ply. Our Bristol interior was a work of Art.

I was going to ask the same question, but then he flashed the price on the screen. With an excellent swabbie like Molly the opening bid would have been $1,020,000 or like @Larry Gee pointed out $1,030,000 with the dingy. So I think it is safe to assume the answer is ........NO!
I think 20K is very low. A better price, to me, seems like at least 30K would be more realistic. I imagine whatever you look at will be a fixer upper with center cockpit. Look at what Spoondrifters are doing on their channel.
Compared to the asking price of other boats, yes, it's waaaaay low.
Trouble with most other boats is that they sell for waaaaaay less than asking.
We're just getting ahead of that process by pricing it right out of the gate.
