  • I thought it would be fun to look at some supplies I kind of wish I didn't buy.
No shade to any of these companies, you don't know until you try right?
Please share your art and craft supply regrets in the comments below or ideas on how I might better use these products.
    Stuff I mentioned:
Teresa Collins Stampmaker by Imagepac: The results were good when I got it to work but it was fiddly and expensive to maintain and there seemed to be inconsistencies in the stamp packet refills.
Distress oxide sprays: I loved the ink pads and re-inkers so I thought I'd love the sprays but I didn't like them as well and the warning on the bottle made me nervous
Glitter Duster: very messy but it does make me laugh when I use it so is it really a regret?
Distress crayons: I don't like them nearly as much as other products in my stash.
The doily die: I didn't know anything about intricate dies when I bought this, it's beautiful but still fiddly so I only use it on special occasions when I have a look of patience. This taught me not to buy intricate dies, and also I don't love the process of die cutting, I like the results tho.
The 600-page sketchbook: This was an optimistic purchase, I wanted to be the person who fills such a huge sketchbook, and oh what a value! In reality, it is too big and heavy to lug around and the paper isn't that great.
Letterpress stuff: This is an odd one, I like the process and the look but it really lacks the WOW factor once the project is made. Ironically I can make custom letterpress plates with the Stampmaker but as we know that is way too fiddly for me. I really like all forms of printmaking and stamping so I think I will return to this someday.
Glass rods for bead-making: This craft is fiddly but also meditative and I really enjoyed it but I got freaked out by warnings from viewers and I didn't know ow what safety equipment I needed as the instructions in the Diamond Techn kit I had didn't say I needed anything. Before I was worried about that I but a bunch of low-quality rods and they were hard to use as they would crack and snap when heated. I knew this when I bought them but thought I could make it work because they were so much cheaper, lesson learned.
so what are your art and craft supply regret purchases?

I also purchased glass rods before realizing I am not a glass bead maker for the same safety reasons ( I even took classes to try and get by my fears) I put my rods in a clear glass flower vase from the dollar store then in a window that gets good sun ( in front of my kitchen sink) I can now enjoy the light passing through them and the beauty they create.

Just about everything requires that prop 65 warning if sold in CA. I have a desk lamp that had the warning on it. The warning is also posted at places of business like gas stations, grocery stores and even Disneyland. I believe it is a bit overused after 30 years.

I worked in life insurance for 20 years. We had CA warnings And many other requirements. We usually released to CA in a separate project, they were so complicated. So CA messes with every industry. Dont be afraid, there is way too much fear nowadays

Here by Lake Erie we have our 24 inches of snow even after sun melt and wind like nobodies business. My weakness is Estate sales and junk shops. So my regret is Too Much Stuff. Loved the video. Re: the Distress crayons- I never saw the appeal when they were first released but when I watched Tim’s Saturday videos about them I decided to try a few and like them. I recommend watching some of those Live replays because he gets very deep in to how to use all the products ( some of the vids are 3+ hours long) and they have been very inspiring. Maybe try to w one too.

Yeah, I have extras of so many things because I set everything aside and then buy the same thing over again. Because I'm a little numb. I'm sure the things don't go to waste because I give them to Goodwill. I never seem to hit Goodwill on a great day. Well, I have learned. I think long and hard about whether I NEED or just want something. I need very little but want everything. I just don't buy anything that doesn't make the cut.

I love the distress oxide sprays, they are amazing for making backgrounds for cards. I spray the inks on a glass mat and smush my card blanks into it, then dry the card and smush again, dry again, ones out amazing. I have the Gemini die cutting machines and that die that is intricate, the stuff will fall right out with very little poking. Glitter spray I use in a splat box. The crayons are great for using on metal ephemera. I mark and rub it in, makes letters stand out on metal. So many uses besides water coloring with them. I would gladly purchase your distress spray, if it is in my budget. Love all your videos.

I can't believe how much better this chat made me feel. I have tons of things I had to have that either didn't turn out to be what I thought they were or that were supplies for things I have moved on from. The biggest example of the latter is a huge electronic weaving loom that takes up most of a room. I did use it for years to make many beautiful things, but now that I've stopped weaving, I not only have this big loom, I also have dozens of cones of weaving yarn, including many that I bought because, like you, they were large and I was into volume. I also have far too many watercolor sets, which I bought after getting into watercolors (partly from watching your videos). Given my mediocre skills and infrequent painting, I should have stuck with just one or two inexpensive sets, or maybe just the ones I found in my basement from 30 years ago. Thank you for this comforting and amusing reality check!😊

I have a few as well. The biggest is the red rubber unmounted stamps. They were a good deal, however, they do not print well at all. They need to be mounted, and I have no idea how to do it. After falling in love with the Tombow water based dual brush markers, I bought the ENTIRE set of their ABT Pro alcohol markers for over $500 and they kinda stink as far as alcohol markers go. The money could have been spent MUCH more wisely and effectively. It still hurts every time I look at them and imagine what $500 worth of Copics would look like.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow! I have not tried them yet as the reviews have been poor. I love their waterbased ones and I think they are the best of the dual brush options, certainly the longest lasting. I think they might have rushed them trying to jump on the popularity of alcohol pens. Its such a shame tho as it might make their other products look bad.

One idea for your sketchbook is just what you started it for clean off stencils, extra paint from other projects. Use different pages for different colors go back an forth then you'll have many back ground pages to use in the book or tear out. All year out use for making a collage. Just and idea. Or let you daughter use it...

This has been organization week at our place so I have come across many things that have caused me to shake my head but I have also been surprised at the new way that I look at other products that I am rediscovering. Distress Sprays are great with low quality watercolor--spritz the paper then spray several different colors. They make great paper for die-cutting flowers, leaves and other things. (And a use for the watercolor paper that I regret buying.) Have a wonderful week!

Been there and done that. It always amazed me how I could go to a craft fair and spend more money than I would for the rest of the year. I had a talk with myself (great conversation because there is no backlash!), and said this is nuts, you are so much smarter than this. So now when I’m shopping on line (craft fairs may never come back), I add things to my cart and I walk away. When I come back to it, at least 8 hours later, I realize that many of the items are close duplicates of what I have or they are items I would not want to spend the time using. Do they call this “time management”? LOL!
One item you have that I do enjoy is the oxide sprays. If course I don’t have 19 of them🙄, but the 4 I have I like. Was not aware of the warning however, I only spray them in a box that is pretty deep and I do cover my box up after every use. Because I don’t use them that often I choose to consider myself safe.
    Thanks Lindsay, another fun video.

I feel like that with cutting machines. I had one of the Cricut machines that took cartridges and sold it cause I didn’t want to spend all the money on cartridges. Have a Sizzix Bigshot, a Spellbinders Plantinum that’s nice, but big and bulky, 2 Silhouette machines, a Cricut Joy, a Brother Scan and Cut and just recently threw away a Sizzix Sidekick that crapped out. I had purchased a Cricut Air not long ago and realized that was dumb and sold it. I mean really…..how many machines does one need. I am also realising that although I have a large quantity of sentiment stamps I am far more likely to design a digital insert. I love the idea of inky backgrounds but don’t like making them. I do love the Distress Oxide pads too but I only have 4, meanwhile I have a massive collection of the original Distress Ink pads I barely use. I swatched them out and hated them! Also fell prey to the distress sprays, have no idea how they work. Can’t believe I overlooked the glitter sprayer! I could possibly get a stripper job to pay for my failed craft pile. The products seem fair I didn’t enjoy the process or using the product! I too purchased several torches for metal smithing....as well as metal stamps I have never used. I was terrified of the whole fire idea in my apt. Gifted another friend the torches....she was thrilled. I hated all the sanding and buffing that was needed. I could go on and on! I returned the distress crayons I bought.....didn’t even open them. I have a UV light as well that was part of the whole altered book thing! Oh my.....I could go on. I have worked in the craft field on and off forever! I collect scrapbooking stuff cause I was head of the dept in a big craft store....never finished one scrapbook page. Hated that hobby. I just love the rubber stamping back in the day. A few notes about Distress Crayons. They work best on metal. You can use them to add color to metal charms and they dry to a finish. They also work best on a sealed paper finished with gel medium, collage medium, gesso etc.and not directly onto paper. After the paper is sealed you can scribble, add a spritz of water and move the crayon around especially with your finger. Great on sealed collages. I must admit I was disappointed just using them directly on watercolor paper, cardstock etc. but after sealing the paper it was a whole new experience. You might like to try it to get some great use out of them. Years ago we also did some embossing on metallic aluminum tape and the crayons also work well to add a little color to it and the crayons do dry on the surface. P.S. I just chuckled when I saw that heavy , thick sketchbook-WOW!!!!

Re the fiddly doily die, all my fiddly dies were able to be cut like buttah after purchasing a Gemini Junior electric machine. The difference was a dark stormy night vs. bluebirds and a sunshiny day. But I die cut frequently and might not be right for very occasional die cutting.

Sorry Tim. I regret buying the Tim Holtz original Vagabond. I bought it years ago when it was first released. One Christmas I used it to make Christmas cards. It worked well. Then I busted it out to make cards for a wedding, I'm not sure what happened, but the machine spit out the 'sandwich'. I was glad I wasn't in the way when it flew out. Well, it stopped working. It wouldn't take in the platform to cut the die. I ended up keeping it for years. It would sit in my craft room mocking me. Tomorrow, I will FINALLY take it to my city's special e-waste center to recycle. I will take the accessories for the machine to Goodwill. I think I will feel better when its out of my craft room.

Oh my heavens, I laughed so hard I nearly spit my coffee out of my nose at your analysis of the glitter duster! I've been looking at one because I HATE glitter but i do want to be able to use it at some point and thought about the gliter duster. As far as TH Products, there seems to be a little bit of a learning curve with some things, such as the sprays especially the oxide sprays and crayons. It took me a while to jump on the spray bandwagon until I saw some other creators use them for their backgrounds. I have yet to open mine, haha! I have a few buyers remorse items, but like you had said maybe I am using it the wrong way. I enjoy your Sat Stamp Chat :) Newer sub to your channel!

A couple of years ago, when I got into paper crafting, I purchased a We R Memory Keepers deckle edge (and others), cutter. I couldn't get it to cut the paper. So I realized I needed the magnetic pad to go under it. So I purchased that. I still can't get it work the way it should. You have to push down on the cutting blade really hard and I have RA so that makes it difficult. I would have been better off buying a bucket of the fancy edge scissors. I purchased it at JoAnns, but I can't even find it now on their website, so maybe they did away with it. It's now take up space in my craft storage. Time to purge.

Think I would slice pages out of book, gesso and use for art journal pages (glue together if need thicker) and rebind them into individual journals with discs or 3 ring binders or any binding technique. Like you have 600 PCs of paper for 24 dollars, might as well use them😀 could also use the cover and make a thinner journal with less signatures out of it when you remove all the original pages.

It’s funny I started out with distress crayons (I didn’t like how they felt on paper even after 24 hours) and I didn’t really get the big deal with them but like you I had to have more lol. Then I found the neocolor 2 and I was so shocked! I have since sold all my distress crayons and sprays(they were too messy) but I adore neocolor 2. So no more watercolor based crayons for me I will save up for the best! Also I would take that sketch book apart and tea/coffee dye the paper and use it to make junk journals or collage. You could try the oxides on that paper and see if it would be good backgrounds for your card making too. But I would take it apart!

My Achilles: PAINT & paint pigments! I've been a professional graphic novel artist & writer for over 35 years. I've had a hard learning curve, in that I can't depend on anyone to ever help me.
I spend 💰 on programs, gadgets, to help speed me up on production. The Art Institute of Chicago always gave me such a bad time, when I lived in Chi-Town! Real fight, to make them accept us as equal artists. They looked so down their noses at me, even though I taught privately, many of their students color theory.
Mostly studied Vermeer, Rembrandt & DaVinci. I learned how to make Vermeer's paints from pigments, etc., because of my most treasured paints: Manganese Blue, Lead Yellow & Lead White! Then I discovered that Manganese Blue paint itself, wasn't toxic - it was the Refinery used, which pumped out immense amounts of pollution, not the paint! So I have indeed learned to make my favorite watercolours for myself, plus anything else that intrigues me. Weather conditions do affect it. Then, I try to have the same colors, across oils & acrylics!
What I've made in WC: Lead White; Lead Yellow; Lead Tin Orange, in addition to Manganese Blue. So much work, even had to learn how to make Dextrin in my oven.
This all began 35 years ago, when I discovered that Indigo was originally made out of crushed Lapis Lazuli! I wear a ring I made at 16, of a stone that came from the same mine as they mined King Tut's Sarcophagus. Nearly a flawless deep blue - and I used that to compare all lapis to, that was crushed into paint. That I now use.

Hi Lindsey. I stop buying tonic products because of the same cancer warnings. You'd think in this day and age supplies would be manufactured without potential harm to the consumer. Sadly, the companies focus is profit not consumers's health. The kicker is they state how regulations require that they post the warning so that we, as consumers can make an informed decision. Thanks, but, no thanks.

For the 600 page sketchbook, you might try tearing the paper out. It was so thin I was wondering if it would be good for faux washi tape. You could definitely gel print.
It’s hard to pass on a used sketch book but paper is much easier to give away. I think I’d carefully undo the binding so the inner edge of the paper stays nice.
We are apparently quite similar right down to the radio thing. I strongly suspected that the DIY polymer stamp kits would drive me crazy. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
As for the Oxide sprays, I haven’t purchased any because I don’t like sprays. Ask how many sprays I bought before admitting that to my self. 🤣 If I feel I need a spray, then I’d much rather go the DIY route and just make a little bit.
One of the things I’ve figured out about myself is I’m not that fond of hydrophilic art supplies. I like using supplies that play well with others. Gel plates help with sealing in supplies that reactivate with moisture, because plates allow me to apply a sealing coat all at once.
As for the Distress Crayons, we are completely in sync save I paid retail. I’m with you: Neo Color II for the win! I often use an acrylic medium instead of water so that the color doesn’t react with anything. I’ve even used Neo Color II on fabric with an acrylic fabric medium. Eleven years later and it still looks as good as the day I did it, that is to say not great but no color fade or pilling. It’s not easy to achieve a watercolor look on fabric.
Distress Crayons perform better if you let them dry out a bit. They are better on metal and wood than paper. Tim Holtz routinely uses crayons to color in embossed details on metal. But I can do the same thing with acrylic paint and other soft pastels I like better so I wouldn’t purchase Distress Crayons again.
I wish craft designers and manufacturers didn’t feel like they have to have their own version of everything. What is wrong with sharing customers?

I have distress sprays and Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays and I use them like watercolors. I pour a little into a porcelain palette and paint like I would with liquid watercolors. I let them dry and have never had a.problem rewetting them. You could probably add mica powder to the distress sprays to achieve the same results as the Lindy's sprays.

I don't have any regret about art supplies I've bought, I just have difficulty finding time to use them at the minute. I definitely want an art space in my new house so I have everything easily to hand and the space is only designated for creativity. 😊
As you know I'm in England, but even here, everything from California seems to have that warning on it - even stuff you have no possible chance of inhaling or ingesting. I think it's a 'cover your a**' catch-all for manufacturers. 🤣
I think you need a massive Ebay session... so you can make more room for stuff you do like and use. 😊
