Boox Tab Ultra has been on the market now for 3 months and the TabX has rolled out, establishing a new series of devices for Boox, the Tab series. These devices are their top-of-the-line devices that include their own GPU unit for screen refresh speed and clarity improvements, and they also bring a new OS experience to the users. However, they also bring a series of inconsistencies and issues as well. Let's address those, shall we?

I have installed 3.3.2 Beta update on Ultra
1- they add 34 languages to physical keyboard (includes Arabic keyboard”
2- they add “NEVER - 30 minutes- 1 Hour” in Auto sleep mode. So you can completely close auto sleep.
3- No issues with login to Boox accounts. Actually I never get this problem from day one and before beta update.
Thank you so much for your efforts for ereader community. You saved me many times earlier 🌹🙏
nice! As I'm on my way to buy Tab Ultra in the next few days, and I was wondering, how can I solve issue using non-English keyboard layout.
How's the battery perf with the beta?
@@SJMG I'm not using the device heavily these days, but I did not find a [problem with the battery. Even with earlier Beta software for all my previous Boox devices (Leaf-Nova Pro - Nova Air C) I did not have any issue with battery
Boox shoukd hire you as a ux guy
Product Manager.
E-ink tablet connoisseur
Great help! Thanks a ton! Please keep us upraised of the fixes when they occur!
I really appreciate what you do, especially surrounding Tab X. I guess I’ll wait a bit before I jump into this technology - until it’s ready for Primetime.
Did not spot the keyboard one but absolutely had same reaction about the sleep mode and refresh ones. As I am/was a remarkable user too, I was not aware of the smoothing line function on Boox. Another quite crazy miss given that they had it on their own "lower" products. Thanks for the usual great work, Voja
actually on stable 3.3.2 tab ultra has auto sleep never now
You're doing great job! cheers!
Glad that I've seen it. I was just about to buy tab x but I guess I'll hold back a bit. You would think that they have polished their software through the many years they've been on the market.
i absolutely agree with everything you said. i just got the device last week and i already feel like there are so many things they could have done to make it a better device and they just missed the mark.
I noticed some of the discrepancies. Thanks for pointing out the smoothing issue. I noticed it, but I didn't understand why the writing looked different. The sleep mode drives me crazy.
And, if Boox reads this: Please create a zoom feature. It works in some apps to pinch and zoom, but not the main screen. I bought this device due to my vision disability, but I still need a magnifying glass to use it. Accessibility features, like zoom, need serious attention.
Thank you for this channel. It's so informative.
Do you know if the Tab X is still missing the option to anti-alias ones stroke by enabling "Automatically refresh strokes after lifting stylus?"
Do you know if the Boox Max Lumi2 still allows this anti-aliasing? If so, I would much rather get it than the Tab X.
Again, thank you very much for this channel.
(Edit: I fixed an error; previously I called the Tab X the Ultra X by mistake)
Thank you Voja, great video as always.
I have a question, not very related to bugs: do Boox Tab Ultra or Tab X allow you to display two different notes in a split screen view?
Yes they do, you can use a splitscreen view on both as I am aware.
@@Bretonjar1 Thanks for your answer. I'm aware that you can use a splitscreen view on Boox Tab devices, but I'm not sure if it's possible to simultaneously open two different notes on which you can write alternately
For me their mistake is that they are still trying to build another tablet. If i wanted a tablet i would pick a Samsung, Apple, etc... I just need a device that will help me to get rid of all the paper, will let me take notes, read books and PDFs... I dont want music, video, TH-cam etc on It. Just need a good hardware, space to store books and PDFs, a nice battery, a microsd slot and a few colors so i can highlight things. But they are still trying to give me another tablet, that i already have...🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️. While they dont understand this, they will keep doing things wrong and people will not buy it, not for the nowadays prices...
I just got the Tab Ultra C. I added a number of apps from the Google Playstore but the icon shortcuts for those installed apps aren't added to the desktop. The manual states they will be added to a new page when the current page is full, but the default desktop page is already full and a second page is not added and the shortcuts are missing. I have had to add some of the apps to the floating ball in order to access them without going back into the Playstore and opening them from there. Doesn't make sense, seems like it is a bug. I'm waiting for a reply from Boox help. Also, I don't care for the new UI. The UI for there other devices is fine, but for the Tab series I don't care for it.
What?!
Thankfully there are channels like yours on youtube, which examine the latest "improvements" or better "unimprovements" of these devices.
This really is a major issue for the BOOX devices.
I think, that they changed some positions in the company and the new people, who can make the major decisions, are just too inexperienced or the quality management, who has to test those new devices and software features of the new versions are either unsuitable for the job or just sleeping all day long.
If I would buy such a device, I would expect to have an Android tabled like for example the Samsung Galaxy Tab lineup with some changes, that I'm fully aware of.
Those changes are:
1) A device with much longer battery life than a Galaxy Tab, because of the black and white screen and low energy consumption of especially those screens
2) A premium writing experience like actually writing on paper
3) The possibility to change PDF documents (mark them, make changes to them) and save the changed version as a fully exportable copy which can be used as an original PDF on any device
4)The possibility to create documents or notebooks and export them as PDF and mix&match between documents as I wish and like (for example: page 5, 77, 354 from document1, page 6, 87 from document 2 gets me a new PDF document of 5 pages)
5)The possibility to WRITE my notes on these PDF documents and export them as stated in 4.) and 3) .
6.) The "Turn screen off function after 5 or 10 or 30 minutes" as in any normal Android tablet or even Kindle Oasis AND a "Never turn off function" as well.
If you are reading a PDF, maybe doing a math homework assignment, and the page doesn't stay on indefinitely, it stays on just for 10 minutes maximum time, how on earth are you supposed to concentrate on your math homework if your mind is constantly interrupted after 10 minutes by the device thrning into "sleep-mode"?
This just screems: "Don't buy a Boox Tab Ultra" .
7.) The probably most used Feature of the different screen speed modes got worse as well, I will write an improvement I want in the "That means for me" section.
So, what exactly happened to the company BOOX?
Why do they change a perfectly functioning running system for the worse?
So please BOOX, fix that, so I really am able to consider buying a writing tablet from you if I need one in the future.
I hate to give Apple the money and a Microsoft Surface is a luxury I don't really need with too much functionality and as a consequence of that, a much higher price.
What I really need is a digital Notebook with a true feeling as writing on paper, Android tablet functionalities and a long battery life AND a hassle-free environment.
That means for me:
Screen-on-time indefinitely a.k.a. "Never turn off function, just limited by the battery if it runs out.
An easy-to-understand system which is kept to be the same with all devices ("Speed-Modes"),
Premium experience,
PDF document mix&match,
writing on PDF and exporting different pages with mix&match,
Long battery life even with screen turned on indefinitely (should at least last for 10 days if it's always on with "Sleep functionality")
Speed modes improvement: Please list the estimated battery time remaining under each "Speed-mode-icon"
What I mean is something like that:
Slow speed...........20h remaining
Normal Speed......15h remaining
Fast Speed.............8h remaining
Ultrafast Speed......3h remaining
Something like that would be very helpful. You would get a better context of the choices. On the phones and tablets, such systems already existed long ago, it would really help making the decision about which speed mode to use if battery time might be crucial to finish a project if you know you won't get the ability to charge the device for the next X hours.
So, please fix those things and I am almost certain to get a BOOX device in the future.
Very good comment above about the effects of reducing speed to make the use of the device last longer on a single charge.
I will delay getting a device as I do not need so much hassle.
These reviews and all the comments are very helpful to help us avoid buying into a disaster of unending frustration.
Can please write in what of your videos you did deep explanation of neoreader functionality?
Is it possible to use in the note function different templates within the same note on different pages?
I actually intend to watch academic lecture videos, my iPad gives me eye strain. Do you think I will be able to watch and understand lecture videos as these devices have a slow refresh rate.
If not the battery I would already made a jump to this device. Now I'm thinking about Lumi2 or perhaps I should still wait (a couple of years?) for a 13 inch color device.
I agree.... I find navigation in my tab ultra sucks too.
Boox should hire someone to streamline their ui and ux.
Got my Tab X two days ago. Took about two weeks from HK. Missing Norwegian language possibility, but this will come in update?
No log in issue here with Tab Ultra, and I never heard anyone complaining about this. Do you have the issue on both the Tab Ultra and the Tab X ?
As I stated in the video, not on the Ultra, only on the TabX.
@@MyDeepGuide sorry, I missed that
Do you address the items directly towards Boox too? Curious about there reaction.
Yes I have, and most if not all of these are already addressed in the beta, so the next update should solve these. But it's odd that they were there in the first place.
@@MyDeepGuide Good to know that they try to solve the problems with updates.
Is there any chance of Onyx Boox coming out with a much better larger sized colour version?
What does Onyx Boox think of the gallery 3 screens?
@@MyDeepGuide I sense they are rushing changes out the door and are not keeping up with the complexity they are adding.
getting psfs and documents and snippets generally are frustrating to get the onto the boox
I would have already bought the Tab Ultra, if not for all the software issues that I have seen and lack of quality software maintenance.
9:25 i’m about to buy a tab x. what do those icons mean
This is explained and shown in detail in my TabX in-depth review video, in "screen" and/or "reader capabilities" chapters.
Ahh this video came in at the right moment. Just realized today that I have this strange yellow tint on the edges on my Note Air 2+ ... again ... as I had the same issue with the Note Air 2, too. So I have to send it back and I was looking into other options. I do love eNote devices but I think I am moving on from Onyx, the software implementation annoys me so bad and then these screen issues, so frustrating. Does anyone know if the Supernote A5 supports custom templates by now? _cR
Yes, it supports. I think you can also create them on the device.
Hi Voya, what is the stylus that you are using in this video ?
Kindle Scribe Premium pen.
I got a note air 2 plus yesterday but I find reading on it to not have enough clarity so I’m probably going to try a tab x but why isn’t there a size in between these two because all I want is to be able ti read technical book format at 100% and it’s a common format.
Someone deleted my comment it seems....
Boox are well known devices for not being user friendly and requiering a bit of problem solving...
Don't throw more money on another device from the same company because you will run into the same issue sooner or later.
There are settings that can improve text clarity. Voja has instructions in one of his vids on how to do it. I can't remember where though....you can search yourself.
Here is another video that might help

No one deleted the comment, it's TH-cam being cautious whenever a comment has a URL of any kind, the comment has to be manually approved.
@@MyDeepGuide fair enough.
I think they should just stop messing around with the UI and OS with the idea of getting an optimized experience for every product line (that is the only reason I can think of that makes any sense...). Instead, make ONE Version of your OS for ALL your E-Ink Tablets (and a cropped down version for the E-Readers...)! The way it is now it's just confusing and maybe even more important is, that older devices could profit from updates but because they do it as they do most resources will always go to the newest OS iteration for the newest devices. This does just not make any sense to me.
You mentioned that the keyboard language is not selectable but you did not mention if your keyboard is not working correctly. (Have not watched the video to the end)
Why would it not work correctly?
@@MyDeepGuide I mean does the missing option cause some problems?
Yes, it does, because you can't access language specific characters, such as Ø for example.
@@MyDeepGuide ok, I was thinking maybe they have some smart detection, I think in Linux you can automatically detect the layout. Thanks for the clarification.
Thank you. Am delaying my purchase.
Exactly what I am going to do as well....delay.... as I do not wish to endure the disappointments.
What is battery life exactly
Check the in-depth review of each other devices on my channel and watch the "Battery" chapter to find the answer.
Boox seem so messy. They seem to be rushing product out the door. I say that, but they are still darn impressive.
The BOOX TAB ULTRA is complete crap. There is nothing that works properly on this tablet. The wifi does not hold more than 2 minutes. The screen is outdated. The writing experience is disastrous. The price tag is indecent. The Remarkable 2 or the Scribe are in a totally different category
Boox customer service sucks!
Which firmware version do you use?
I am using an Onyx Boox Tab X. I sent them a bug report about the USB keyboard, and they automatically sent me three firmware updates to 3.3.2 (beta) so far. The last one came on the 03/15. I can set up an USB keyboard to different languages.
Didn't check for the other problems but go for the beta version to check out if they are solved. I think they will enable beta firmware options if you send them a message through the device feedback option.
Thanks for the update, but I check and report on final versions that are available to all users.
@@MyDeepGuide Understandable. Just a reminder that they obviously work on some critical problems.
That's good to hear. What would have been even better is if the new line of devices that are supposed to be the flagship devices didn't introduce a regression from the existing devices.
@@MyDeepGuide The official update has been released. You might want to try it out.
