This is definitely my favorite song of the month on all of TH-cam. I think this has a thickness to it which I like, a thickness or heaviness or depth of emotion, an immersion in strong emotions. Absorbing, draws you in. There are clues, perhaps, in the etymology of "passion." So then, as in the song, it relates to falling deeply in love, and the challenges of such relationships, (as in the lyrics!) such as during the "intimacy" stage of life (Erik Erikson). Obviously it's a quality of the tune and the lyrics, (hey, "gravity," as a human quality!) and how she renders it. This depth of emotion is something that songs can sometimes do to us and for us. This might be called a therapeutic quality of putting us in touch with deep feelings, working through challenging relationships, and, by extension, the challenges of a life of passion. Jane Austin, (I'm thinking of the movies, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice,) liked to contrast lightness and depth of character, (as well as other qualities,) and I think Jane herself represented the latter. Each can surely have it's appeal, (as Jane Austin showed and surely felt as well,) it's place. Here the depth is a key to the appeal for me. Put differently, this song has more profound dramatic qualities than about any other song on the list and etc. I think she demonstrates a great ability to sing dramatically. (Think of movie catagory of drama.)

I've been watching a lot of "got talent" type auditions, and some of them really ramp up the sensationalism, sometimes even in extremely gimmicky ways, (which is also a quality of our culture at this time in history, vs. classic periods) (cf. "sensate culture," Pitirim Sorokin). In fact, there's a view that moving AWAY from this direction is the place to find renewal of the arts of our culture post 20th century art. (Sorokin, Mumford-"Renewal in the Arts") I prefer the softer singing, and I therefore really like the song here. This performance strikes me as quite subtle and soft, or more to the point, as a sleeper, much better in repeated viewing than it seems at first glance. When I had listened to it 3 times, it got a lot better the 2nd time and then again the 3rd time, as I focused more. (I feel bad that I didn't appreciate it more the first time, [but perhaps I was checking out the back up, very entertaining].) (I'm glad I came back!) In part I think her voice and manner are a bit disarming. She sneaks up on you before you realize it. There's a poignant vulnerability in the lyrics, which she expresses effectively in these ways (above and below and more). I think it works well for this song, (an awesome choice for her). I saw that it is a senior song and/or performance of some kind. I find it to be an exceptionally beautiful version of the song, (I find no others I like as well,) a great choice for a beautiful voice. I think that many singers are encouraged to sing high in our culture, (high is what sells!). But here, as in (Somewhere Only We Know and various other videos here) I find the lower tones often emphasized and especially appealing, in a way high notes cannot be (or cannot without the contrast). I think there's a kind of resonance, (as when she sings "fragile,") which she maintains through the full range, and which I find to be important in what makes this beautiful for me. (It's often missing in music today, which seeks other, more "sensate" goals, such as ever higher and louder.) (On the point of low tones cf. the very surprising low tones in "ВОТ ЭТО ГОЛОС ДО МУРАШЕК И СЛЕЗ Влад Курасов Предкастинг в Донецке. Х-Фактор Украина 2," which also maintains the resonance throughout the full range.) There is, however, a key shortcoming in these videos which is rarely found in the videos on my "See the Main Chance" playlist: there are no shots of audience/judges reactions to her! That's a big part of what ramps up the audition videos! (I imagine some great reactions to her song, [and other songs,] here, however!) ( I've added this to my "The Myth of Beauty" playlist, (a syncretic collage influenced by Rollo May in My Quest for Beauty, pp. 181-184). (Also she makes especially nice "senior sendoff" comments, so) I think it all, (and the others here,) symbolizes just the kind of college experience and senior achievement that we all hope for for our daughters, (mine's a sophomore).
