The Prettiest Analog Synth (That Also Sounds Fantastic)

  • If you like the synth sounds of Boards of Canada, Plaid and other early Warp acts, and you appreciate beautiful design, the Mutuca FM by Arthur Joly is for you. Arthur send me it a while with no strings attached, and when I finally found time to play with it, I was amazed by its sounds and decided to record a video on it. The Mutuca has a warm and rich tone, almost like it was already processed on tape. Not a synth for every situation, but basses and leads it does charmingly well.

    I was at at Arthur Joly´s Studio once. I was living in Sao Paulo and joined an introductory analog synth workshop he was holding at a cultural venue. I was so intrigued that i asked him if he could give me a personal lesson. So we agreed that i come to his studio. He showed me the basics and left me alone afterwards for me to patch around for a few minutes. But i was overwhelmed by all the new concepts and was just able to open and close the filter and change the pitch of the notes in the sequencer. i was afraid to unpatch anything...lol It was a huge big format synth that reached all the way to the ceiling. i felt i was left in charge of a nuclear reactor or something...

Being more familiar with wood rather than electronics, from what I can see, the casing is a wooden veneer, therefore friendly for rainforest conservation.

  • @lokelosk
    @lokelosk ปีที่แล้ว +7

    In Brazil, synthesizers are kinda rare to spot in the wild. Electronics are stupidly expensive there, with most stuff costing almost double the price in Europe and North America thanks to importing taxes. It's no wonder that synthesizers are reserved to the "well-off" or have a very niche market, are hard to market, and even harder to sell. Even if you build your own, I bet most parts would still be more expensive than they should.
    I'm almost 40, and the first time I ever touched a synthesizer was after moving to Europe a few years ago. I guess that's why most of Brazilian music involves acoustic instruments (lol), so it was very surprising to discover that there is, in fact, someone making boutique synthesizers in Brazil. That's pretty cool.

    • @erfwtf

      Checkout Electronic Music Works (EMW) synthesizers made in Brazil.

    • @lokelosk
      @lokelosk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@erfwtf Never knew about them. Just checked it out, their cheapest synth is 390 USD. That's way too expensive for the average Brazilian. Just for comparison, cheap guitar brands like Squire and Epiphone are already considered expensive for the usual guitar player.
      It's telling that the EMW site is in English, with no option for Brazilian Portuguese, and all the pricing is in USD and not BRL.

      All my Brazilian pals have to import electronics thru family or friends of friends of friends when they go on holiday. “Bring me back an x and a y please, I’ll pay you back!” Though they’ll readily admit it’s pretty middle-class to be able to do even that.
