He demonstrated you don't want to be hit at the lims and shoulders at least at all even if you wearing armor because very likely to get stuff broken and cracked.
6:20 I raised hogs. Boar tore my thigh open when I was young. Pigs are very similar to people even internally, and even things like pig heart valves have been used in people
The muscle density too, I think that was why they used to use dead pigs to simulate the effects of firearms damage on humans, wasn't it? Before switching to that transparent gel they use now.
Years ago pigs were a source of Insulin for diabetics. In fact pig’s Insulin is similar (just 1 amino acid difference) to the human one and it could be isolated in useful amounts.
As a dude that played baseball, seeing those blows w/ the 1h sword on that plate made my forearms and hands go numb remembering that vibration. Dude probably felt the vibration from that blow in his soul, jfc.
Caught him on a live stream the other day and told him you guys should link up for a project. He said he wasn't sure how to contact you directly, you two should get in touch somehow👍
Note the flex on the single edged viking sword in the slow mo. I own the cold steel version of this single handed Viking sword (I think it's made by the same maker as the Fafnir Firge version that Dash has but regardless its the same design specs except steels are slightly different) but i can say when flexing the blade it's rather rigid; just shows how much energy goes into a hit!
I recognize that hand-and-a-half sword as the one made by Cold Steel, Metatron! I can recognize it anywhere. Used to watch the company's "cutting stuff with the products" videos constantly in middle school.
I really like Dash's channel, too. Coincidentally, the algorithm suggested it to me last year after watching some of Metatron's older videos. One of the few examples of the algorithm doing something right. GLORY TO ROME!!
I agree with you, sir. I appreciate both of these gentlemen for creating excellent videos for us. Their commitment to being historically and scientifically accurate, along with their willingness to acknowledge their own biases, is something I greatly admire and respect. I've noticed that the rate at which I discover new content creators has grown significantly with each small channel I've subscribed to. One advantage of TH-cam, compared to cable TV, is that we can express our preferences more easily and even have direct contact with the "stars of the show." Our input truly matters more than the advertising agencies that were involved in traditional television. If only they would stop pushing their agendas and allow people the freedom to choose what they want to watch, we would really be making progress! 😂 Anyway, I hope you are having a great day. Best wishes to you and your family. ✌️🇺🇸

there used to be a show on History channel where people would make swords, knives etc. from scratch. They almost always tested them on a dead pig carcass.
I believe it was because the muscle mass/density of pigs was 'as' close as you could sorta get at the time, for a sorta general experiment. They used dead pigs for firearms tests too, before most people switched to that transparent gel. (Which, technically, is a lot better for actually visually communicating the kind of data you're looking for)
@@martinsoelsepp5569 I think you are right on the name. I no longer have cable so I wasn't sure if it was still on. I think Mythbusters used to use pig as well for similar reasons

You should see what happens with the blunt force weapons. It damaged the bone through the plate, mail, and gambeson. Quite impressive. It even bent the mail. I love his channel. Great video your channel is great.
TBH, the only think full plate armor is truly cumbersome that has military applications or concerns in...... ambushing, sleeping, and climbing. If you in full currais most likely people are going to hear you, sleeping in something so rigid would suck and well, lots of armor designs limits the range of above your head would make scaling anything besides a ladder hard. Just ask the Hussites. Being above a knight with a weapon you need to lean down to hit them is really effective.
Dash Rendar...Dash Rendar...now that's a name I've not heard in a loooong time. A long time. Folks, Shadows of the Empire for the N64 is 30 next year. Feel old yet?
*I wrote this before Dash said what the sword was. The hand and a half sword looks to be one by Cold Steel. The single edge viking sword looks to be the one by Fafnir Forge which is the essentially same design as the older Balaur Arms & Cold Steel single edged viking swords. The FF version has oxblood leather for the grip & scabbard where both the BA & CS had brown. Also the FF has a wood (?) baldric loop on the scabbard where the BA & CS did not. The steel for the FF version is EN45 high carbon steel where the BA & CS had 1060 high carbon steel. I think OTC / Erik Steelcrafts have made all 3 as they look to be essentially the same although I'm not positive if the FF version is.
Pig carcasses were used, I remember, by the classic Mythbusters (Savage and Hyneman edition) in place of much harder to find human bodies for their experiments, so yes, I think they work.
i’ve heard of that thing about pigs as human stand in… maybe from myth buster’s? what’s disturbing is i’ve also of pig as a culinary stand in for human…
Yes pigs are the closest to human in how the flesh and bones are and work. But something people don't know/mention much is that not only the flesh but the bone also acts quite different in as little as an hour after death
History Channel: Ancient aliens built the pyramids (Graham Hancock was involved with the Ancient Aliens show too), Ghost and paranormal investigations, Nostradamus predicted the end of the world, Ice Road Truckers & Reality TV, etc.
i feel butted mail can actually be beneficial depending on the situation. i see it as a sort of ablative armour, instead of rigidly resisting being destroyed, the rings deforming and flying off might help it absorb more energy out of an impact than the riveted mail might (in a way similar to a modern motorcycle helmet which are designed to absorb force by cracking and flying apart, this is why you never should keep using your helmet after you crashed with it once) multi layered butted mail or perhaps even butted over riveted mail might actually be an experiment worth considering.
In the depot of the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden (now Wereldmuseum Leiden) there are some Indonesian and Philippine chain mail that are butted. I worked in the collection department for 24 years and am now retired
I loved his video and can see you did too Raf 🙂 But I just wanted to point out that historical Falchion, not the ones used in modern Bohurt or reenactment were pretty thin and were definitely more suited to cutting through clothing and textiles, so you'd end up damaging your edges and glancing off completely if you used one against mail. Have you ever thought about doing a video about the "evolution" of horses in warfare? Maybe with some exploration into mongol ponies, mules, and camels?
I have heard the same thing about pig carcasses being analogous to those of humans from multiple sources, especially the Myth Busters. If that is true... Wouldn't it be interesting if anyone testing this stuff would team up with TH-camr Hunt Primitive (Ryan Gill), who hunts loads of hogs over in Florida where they are considered a pest?
