Gariep town history

The town of Gariep was originally established erected in the late 60's for the construction workers building the Gariep Dam. After the opening of the Dam in 1972, the Provincial Administration of the Free State ran the town until it officially become a municipality in 1994. This makes it the youngest town in the Free State
