I'm glad you told us that. I won't bother with it now as i was really keyed into the feel of the arcade version back in the day and it would have pissed me off to find the handling borked.

i do played the PS2 version, and i think its much better. More cars, more tracks, Grand Prix mode, even a 2P mode! The sounds and graphics are quite the same...but the gameplay is just AMAZING!!!
I prefer the more vibrant color palette of the original. I also prefer the sky in the original. The only thing I like more on the PS2 side is the better drawing distance.
I never understood why the PS2 version had the cars sliding all over as if it was a rally game. Despite not looking ok if not a bit dull I always thought it was a terribly port that lots a lot of the magic and enjoyment of the original game.
I always loved the arcade version and hadn't played or seen it in arcades for over 15 years when I got the PS2 compilation disc this is on and just appreciated it so much for in my opinion at the time being arcade perfect, but this comparison shows minor improvements like a higher polygon count, light sourcing, and a deeper draw distance.
I just played both versions. The PS2 version offers 60fps instead of 30 which is great. But it's also much more drifty and each slight car collision lets you spin, so in this aspect the arcade version is better, which also has more vibrant colors. If the arcade version came to the PC in 60fps I'd buy it.
The PS2 version has actual lighting where the sunlight is added to the colour of the surfaces, and this changes the colour somewhat and makes things look a little desaturated but more consistent and in a sense more realistic. It's an interesting trade-off because I'd do the same but most fans seem to not like it.
The PS2 version has some nice lighting, but is missing that exaggerated suspension tilt thing the Arcade is doing. The color and sky stuff is subjective though. Draw distance is longer and frame rate smoother. So it’s really more about the feel, and I only played the Arcade, Mega Drive and 32X versions of the game

É meio covardia comparar com a versão do PS2 já que se trata de 1 remake e ficou infinitamente superior ao original.Tambem ficou show de bola os remakes de Phantasy Star 1 e 2 feitos nesta mesma época.Uma pena os remakes de Golden Axe e Altered Beast terem ficado uma bosta.
The PS2 version could have been perfect but they messed up so many basic things. Arcade mode was missing a lap, so you don’t get to hear that final blood pumping ‘time extend’ track, the engine sound was incorrect- just one sound that increased in pitch rather than going up with the gears. The viewing angles are all wrong- as you can see in the video, the camera is just too close, and the crashes have the same problem as the Saturn version- your car (and your opponents car) both stop dead on the track and spin, rather than spinning while throttling forward. Also the AI cars are incorrectly coloured and they run straight into your vehicle, the arcade AI is so much better. Finally, you don’t get the arcade ending for finishing first on a track in arcade mode. All in all a botched port, the only thing the PS2 version has going for it is decent graphics and the 60fps.
@@sebastiankulche forgot I post this. My complaints are moot now of course, since the release of the Sega Ages Switch port, which is now the definitive way to play Virtua Racing today.

It's a dilemma to be sure: the PS2 version was re-made from the ground up and so it looks, plays and feels very differently to the arcade original. But it's a superb rendition of a superb game that is worth having in its own right. The absence of the ultra-blue sky that seems to be an indeliable quality of 90s arcade racers is jarring, yes, but the frame rate, resolution, draw distance and polygon counts are all a massive boost over the arcade game, and the Switch version managed to one-up the PS2 version only in terms of resolution and frame rate.
The constant sparks flying on the PS2 is annoying. There's way too many and the way the just fly up and land on the ground directly behind the car screws with the sense of speed.
Ps2 is smoother but blurry like ~ very surprised it has clipping tho (pop up in the distance) ~ just shows that if you run different hardware no matter what you do it will look different. Obviously Ps2 is way more powerful than a model1 board.
You can get it to drift in the arcade too but i agree it feels more slidey on ps2. I had the ps2 and 32x at the same time and always thought ps2 seemed off and 32x was more like the arcade I remembered. Also had the Saturn but that feels even less like the arcade but for other reasons.

Eu tive a versão de PS2, é sensacional. Na minha opiniao um otimo remake. Mas do Arcade é clássico, bate o saudosismo (ainda mais aqui em Santos que vivia lotado esse jogo com o Daytona e Sega Rally). Fico no empate.
Exato! Esse é um dos games que me ajuda a lembrar dos anos 90 (voce tinha falado algo sobre isso numa live, se nao me engano). Por isso que gosto tanto de Virtua Racing...

The only thing that the PS2 version has going for it is looks and frame rate because it plays and sounds like utter garbage. I'd much rather play the Saturn version over the PS2 version any day. The best is still the arcade.
It was over rated. Dreamcast has onboard ant aliasing and runs nearly all games at full 480p which is significantly higher than most ps2 games. So the DC looks much clearer now when you compare back.

True. I never played the arcade original, but after playing the PS2 version i knew - i FELT - something was very wrong with the controls and physics.
Virtua Racing is out on the Nintendo eShop in Japan right now, it comes to the West next week

Shading and improved poly count is nice on the PS2 but the car doesn't roll when cornering and as such doesn't look as good.

Pretty much nitpicks, for me PS2 is undeniavebly better, and only because the controls were much better.

Im surprise to see a ps2 version is better so do the music. Maybe because It DVD (15-60mb of cartridge vs 4.7Gb DVD)
