  • NBA Writer Dan Woike joins Colin Cowherd on The Herd ahead of Game 4 for the NBA Finals. The Miami Heat look to bounce back against the Denver Nuggets after Nikola Jokić's 32-point performance propelled them to a Game 3 win. Woike tells Colin that there's really no comparisons for The Joker, who's talent seems to be in a class of it's own. They also talk about the future of the Golden State Warriors, who seem to be in a state of rebuild, and the two decide whether this is still a championship team. Plus, now that he's being waived from the Phoenix Suns, Chris Paul reveals hopes of playing alongside LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Same. I've been watching basketball since 1968. He's an absolute unicorn without a comparison in history.

    • @mobrown1198
      @mobrown1198 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@wyotriumphrider 🎉indeed. I’ve been watching since the mid 70’s. The 76ers Blazers was the first finals I remember. I remember the tape delay finals games.
Jokić is a unicorn of sorts. Although he is great, I think of how he would match up against the many great centers and bigs of the 80’s-90’s.
The one guy I compared him too early on was Joakim Noah. Obviously, Jokic is much better shooting. But Noah, was an above average ball handler, and passer from the center position. Noah, better defensively.
I enjoy watching great basketball players… doesn’t matter “race” athleticism, sIze… I like to see winning, team basketball.
The best players are able to translate their skill to the team game.
I also believe that Hakeem, had a wide skill set as well. He could handle, defend, shoot, pass well from the post. Using his tremendous skill to lift his teammates play.
Personally, I am happy that Jokić, Giannis, Luka (maybe) are at the forefront of the next wave of stars. Hopefully the NBA will take notice and re-emphasize the “I love this games campaign. I believe that grew the game before Lebron’s new player empowered game we have today. Fans rooted for the great teams and their unique skills more in the previous era’s.
I could go on and on with old school nostalgia. Lol.
I don’t compare eras, it’s useless because of the numerous changes in the game. But I do defend the older eras when speaking to the young generations because their have always been Uber athletic players, highly skilled players, etc … outside of the emphasis on the 3pt shot, the game hasn’t changed a lot ~ the lack of post play is a result~ but the core factors of winning basketball have been consistent. The best “team” wins.
Fans can debate who’s the “Goat” but it is a team game and individual accomplishments are great, but when accomplished in the manner Jokić gets it done, brings back the team aspect that wins.
Sidenote: the Warriors were known for their great shooting. But it was their teams game that won them championships.

Statistically he's a top 10 defender in the league. I feel like people focus on the rim protection, or lack thereof, and ignore everything else he does. I'd argue he defends very similar to Draymond Green, passing lane wizard, rebounds as well as anyone, boxes out and positions very well and is very hard to move in one on one situations.
He's that defender where the eye test when you remove a "traditional big" lens is very different than if you focus through that lens and the stats support that. Never been a stats are everything guy but if you look at all the advanced metrics on defense, everyone but Joker is the guys that everyone agrees are the elite defenders in the league and yet we want to throw them out entirely when it comes to Joker.

Too many people have equated athleticism with being able to jump out of the gym or being physically explosive. Jokic is amazingly athletic, but it shows in his passing ability, his footwork, and his body control in the post. That spinarooni move he does to the rim is quick and lethal, and makes the guy defending him look totally helpless.

Jokic doesn’t play aggressive D in the regular season because refs tend to over call fouls on him because of his style of play. He knows as long as he is on the court in the last 10 minutes, they can win every game. So he has to avoid the foul calls. It’s intentional. It’s his strategy. When the playoffs come, fewer fouls are called and the refereeing is generally less unfair to him so he becomes more aggressive.

the reason our minds are so blown by Jokic in America is we always funnel our best big athletes into football and basketball (small guys generally do non contact sports where their size wont be a disadvantage or a sport where its divided into sizes like wrestling or boxing) so every time a good basketball prospect comes along he also happens to be a physical freak. Guys who are 15 years old 6'6" tall with 45 inch verticals. We overvalue natural physical ability...running fast and jumping high. Ive been watching highlights of Zion Williamsons dunks since he was like 14 but never heard whether he even had a jumper. A ton of guards have come into the league jumping out of the gym and running baseline to baseline in 5 seconds but we have to wait 3-4 years for them to develop a jump shot...the most basic way to score in basketball and something they should have been practicing for 10-15 years already. derrick rose john wall ja morant etc. Jokic is the opposite. instead of having all this talent and never working on actual basketball skills because youve always been the biggest strongest fastest like too many american players, jokic had very little natural talent aside from just being tall so he had to over develop his skills to compete. A little bit like steph curry saying he worked on his shot because he was always small and thin and couldnt get close to the basket. alot of euro guys are like this and alot of americans kinda look down on the "soft euro guy" but it just goes back to us overvaluing big strong fast muscle guy who does 360 windmill dunks.

if you were to go back to the 1920's and give someone an iphone, the phone wouldn't work. You would have to bring the person from the '20s to 2023 in order to explain and demonstrate what it does. but i understand his point.

The only way the Heat can get Lilliard is if they trade away Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo. Lilliard is a SUPER MAX player making over $50 million a year. with the new CBA agreement which is similar to a hard cap for the NBA, there is no way that Portland will trade for picks. Miami would have to gut their bench just to get him and Dame Lillard is getting really OLD now.

  • @MartynCollins

Colin cowherd convincingly wrong about CP three on the Lakers. Lakers have an opportunity to resign everyone including D’Angelo Russell if they can get Chris Paul at the minimum. Then it’s obvious that Delo can be traded for pieces you need to make a run at the title at the deadline next year.

While I don't for a second dismiss Jokic's greatness as a player (he appears to be one of the goat centers) basketball is all about matchups.
The Heat are a terrible matchup with the Nuggets due to their comical lack of size which in turn is allowing Jokic to have his way.
I wonder how this series would look against a healthy Joel Embid and the Sixers. Jokic would be tested defensively which is not happening right now against the Heat.
Having to play real defense against an elite center who matches your own size and strength can lead to many things (potential foul trouble, fatigue on offense etc.).

I've listened to Curry get compared to Jordan.
I've listed Lebron get compared to Jordan and Kobe.
But I'll ignore that. Lebron's comparison to Magic or Kobe to Jordan is where I'll stay.
Even with the apparent similarities, each comparison is different.
So along with slight differences, you're telling me that no one compares to Jokic? Ever?
Marc Gasol, Paul Gasol, Arvydas Sabonis, Vlade Divac, Bill Walton, and Dirk, to name a few.
Yes, Jokic is on the verge of becoming a "once in a life time" unique, but after one ring?
Also, let's not act like Murray isn't the most overlooked and underrated point guard ever!
If Jokic doesn't get a ring, they will act like he was Michael Ruffin.
Prisoners of the moment, aka retrospective journalism.

I would love to see CP3 join the Lakers. This move would end Lebron's dream of winning another title and end the stupid GOAT debate once and for all, which should be dead and bury by now except there are some bull headed Lebron fan girls out there who refuse to just let it go. Imagine the injury prone, top heavy, old aged Lakers adding another old injury prone high waged "star" to their line up. Just can't ask for a better formula to fail. For this trade to work, Laker would have to give up all their remaining assets and leave them dry, dead and buried in quicksand lol
