me: cries in pocketCHIP, what a let down that was. this looks much more refined.
PocketChip looked more refined than nearly every other Pi portable case. The Retro Pi Boys excepted.
pi zero killed the chip
@@nolan412 It looked amazing, if someone was able to rebuild its to accept the CM4 with decent inputs that would be awesome
Looks really well made! Thanks for the review! By the way, I think the name was meant to be called "micro-" console, as in electronics, "µ" prefix is often written as "u".
If you hadn't written this comment I would have. I also think it is uConsole and not Uconsole... for µConsole
@@LuminousWatcher same story with uTorrent. Really it's "micro torrent" but everybody just says "you torrent".
The u stands for the greek letter (µ) mu, pronounced /ˈm(j)uː/ .
@@eagledee7753 I like how TH-cam offered to translate your comment into English … must be that new AI
@@unixux works like a charm... 🤣
Clear, composed, covered all the bases. Pretty good at this review thing, aren't you. I was just about to order one until I saw shipping was almost half the price of the base kit.
I do have one criticism: you should wear your ring upside down. That way when you smash someone in the face your initial will be imprinted the right way up.
yeah i thought it was a company in the US or sth so i was quite suprised to see the shipping to China is like $6, and found out that the company is in fact from Guangzhou, China😅
He already is wearing upside down. Lol
Lovely device. Its dimension is larger than I thought, and the clicky keyboard reminds me the Nokia E63 I have used before.
If this had an Ethernet port, it would have happily lived in my toolbox. I hate having to lug around a laptop just to setup one or two access points and switches.
Great review, been waiting for a high quality video like this to go over the device. Makes waiting for mine a little bit easier.
Glad you liked it!
I really like this bro. It's so different from what we normally see. Love it👌🏾🔥🔥
Thanks, we need to evolve
I preordered mine last year and am still waiting for mine to be delivered!
Hopefully your get it soon.
3:24 It is called "Geany" {gee-nee}. It is a programming editor. I use it non-stop for years. It is cross-platform and multi-language. It is for different programming languages. It is not a full-blown IDE, but it is quite good.
This would be much better with a good, gameboy style dpad. With that one, it's a "maybe not for me". With a good dpad, it's an absolute must
A clamshell version of something like this would be super kewl
With just the inner pieces, it might be possible to do such a design hmm
I got hit w/ 2000s era PDA nostalgia last week. ZipIt Messenger has the form factor.
@@nolan412 I remember the zipit and zipit 2. These days the specs are very underwhelming on both devices but they do work as SSH terminals in a pinch The biggest issue is their Wi-Fi chipset only supports 802.11b if I remember correctly. Doing the hardware wire mod to add a serial port to the original zipit is not a fun experience as you're likely to pop off a surface mount resistor or two.
@@Trekeyus I forget why I talked myself of not getting one on ebay. Now wondering how much room is in inside one.
@@nolan412 they are a little in the small side but not too small.
I DON'T NEED IT... I DON'T NEED IT... I DEFINITELY DON'T NEED IT...
Looks great! Thank you for the review. I'm still waiting on mine.... 😭
Still waiting for mine! looks amazing!
Excellent detailed review! Thank you!
this looks really sleek. a perfect stuff to flex to tech people lol
I see this device being a good tool for system administrators and hackers. For everybody else - not so much as anyone else would prefer a full-blown laptop because of the bigger-size keyboard and screen.
I'm a sysadmin and a hacker for 25 years now and this is mostly a toy. They look super cute and I get tempted everytime I see one but I know from experience they have very little practical use.
it is absolutely f**** beautiful though. there are worse toys
It would be dope to see a "real world review." What would something like this be useful for, and how does it actually hold up?
I was personally interested its use as a field hardware terminal (replacing a laptop) or data collection device for research in places where outlets are far away but the location is too serene to start up a generator without feeling like a dick.
I know a professor whose main source of grant money cones from essentially gangstalking monkeys through muddy jungles, and she still hands out to her treasured hoard of decaying water-damaged Psions (bought with grant money in the 90s) to her grad students for this task. She would KILL to try one of these.
I know losers from my old high school who street race ugly modified Japanese sedans on public surface roads and they would love something like this to change engine tuning profiles on the fly and wave around for clout at car meets.
There's so much that this thing looks like it could do. Yes, of course the little D-pad LCD thing can run the bling bling wahoo games and play a video in a chrome tab. Yes. What _can't?_
What else can it do?
Submarine controller.
Minigun turret controller.
If you missed what I'm saying, I'm saying your review feels too focused on all the wrong things and neglects the aspects that really matter about a portable device.
Great product for those who don’t have enough problems and want some 🤣
I hope they’ll fix the wifi issues and make it easier to use because otherwise the hardware design is fantastic.
Looks a lot larger than I expected.
thx for the great review! i just know it by today and can't resist so - order no. 22xxx😂 i heard that many people preordered it on 10-2022. i dont know if the production will speed up after the control in covid19 period is over, finger crossed
I am definitely adapting Parrot Security to this. Looks like a perfect hacking device.
It's cool. Keep up the good work 🎉
Nice! , love your ring btw
Those marks are the battle scars of every cyberdeck. The more the better!
Only a Linux nerd could have conceived such a nerdy form factor, with bolts and all...
I need to buy one. One of the perks of living in a cyberpunk hellscape should be owning and operating my own cyberdeck ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As a security feature - being able to quickly snap out your SD HD and put it in your wallet is great.
Having a few SD cards setup with different OSs (in your wallet - or SD card specific wallet) that you can pop in is great.
I have in the back of my mind a story told in a book I read (on traveling and cybersecurity) about American technology execs traveling to China and having hotel staff (totally in on it with their gov spy crew) doing "room service" and hacking their laptops and other electronic devices when they've stepped out of there hotel rooms.
"if you wanna watch the full review, keep watching" ok bro 👍
used to be one very much like that everyone raved about, was only a few years ago, it's thicker, probably much heavier.
This is the way.
That would be the Pocket C.H.I.P. by Next Thing Co. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHIP_(computer) ) Pocket C.H.I.P. was pretty much a scam. They charged your credit card, led you on with emails and blog posts claiming they were shipping units until it was too late to reverse the charges, then ghosted you without sending you anything.
Of course just because another company with a similar product was a scam, that doesn't mean that this one is. If anyone has ordered and recieved any of Clockwork's previous products, please reply to reassure everybody that they are legit.
You must miss BlackBerry a lot.
Looks like product made by Weyland yutani.. Nice
I try get one of this and drop my comments in here as feedback look really cool
The IO seems difficult to use in practice. Those ports look quite close to the power button and a mini-hdmi is calling for trouble. As for the rest, waw! Looks amazing!
I really want one but I know I won't end up using it enough to justify the investment.
you could cut a tiny strip of tape and put it on the SD card to make a pull tab to get the SD card out easily!
Sure looks cool
Nice video. You can run speed test for wifi and check .
that's a portable cyberduck
I wear cargo pants so how good is the pocketability of the device
the wifi problem ..is because UR BATTERY IS LOW 23:35
CM4 seems snappier than Pi3.
hey bub if you take a piece of tape and fold it over the sd card so theres some tape-to-tape left over sticking out, it will give you something to pick at and pull with those sausage fingers
cool vid
[edit] certain scotch type clear tapes are damn near unrippable
I figured it out I use the end of the tweezer to pop the sd out then yank it out with the other end.
Fantastic. But I want something like the TRS-80 Model 100.
Do you HAVE to be an advanced linux user to put this together and use? Or is this a decent project to be used as a learning experiance?
It's great for learning very easy to build.
Cool product but you will be waiting a long time to get one. It says 3 months on the web site but some folks have been waiting over a year.
Their hardware designs look so cool but have always felt like one-offs with no intention of long term support.
Nothing lasts forever. Use it, love it, then miss it when it's gone. Or you know, toss the shell in the attic for your grandkid to find and mod for fun.
Do they make aftermarket keyboards or “switches” for these yet?
Hi not that I know but may be some will come later.
a magnetic cover over the antenna wouldn't be a good idea
Thanks for the video, looking forward to getting mine
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for the review. Does the night light (the setting to block blue light and make the display more orange/red) work on this device?
I have not tried this yet.
Every time I forget where they ship from: US, EU or UK? If from the US then it'll be double the price concerning shipping and taxes.
China
@@RGhandhelds Really? Have you any idea how to calculate the shipping costs?
@meneerjansen00 you should check the website add to basket and check it I have no idea.
Looks amazing. How long does battery life last?
Depends on your batteries I recommend to get some good quality ones.
Geany = Genie
It looks cool, but those gaming buttons look badly spaced.
Oh and I can’t have noisey buttons. Oh well, looking forward to a future version.
Amazing product. my question is how in the world are they getting Pi's to supply this thing. I've checked every crack and crevice around the world and haven't seen any for over half a year.
Because pis are reserved for industry and b2b. To avoid companies actually needing it bared by geeks
I ordered the non-core version because I already have the pi cm4. I’m just not sure how to put it in once I get the clockwork and it’s taking quite some time since I last ordered it.
EDIT: I got my uConsole today after waiting 6 months.
Thanks for the review! How do you rate the keyboard after prolonged use? Can you imagine writing scrips on this or use it for messaging on something like Slack?
Keyboard is okay but could be better it feel a little hard to press but not too hard.
@@RGhandhelds Yep I'm a bit worried about that. I would like something like Blackberry keyboard, that was excellent (especially the earlier devices).
So... it says KIT on their website. So, build it yourself. Right? If so, it would be nice to see video of how troublesome it was to put together and get an OS on it... or does it already come flashed etc?
inquiring minds want to know.
Or am I totally wrong and it comes more or less already good to go?
There are videos out there showing the build as for the OS it's easy to flash to a SD card and boot it.
it'll be nice when someone throws something other than an rpi in here. I absolutely hate raspberry pi os, and hate that that's the first linux experience a lot of people have. it's always a slow pain in the ass to me.
Retroarch is a retro game emulation software
Nice review, but the key question remains: is the ball clickable? 😂
Yes it is
Waiting for available in India 😢
Shame they dont have the GPIO pins on the top.
can this little awesome machine runs OBS to stream?
Not sure what one is in short terms
I'm looking for a distraction-free handheld word processor to keep in my bag or use in the bedroom.
How would you rate this device for that?
It can fit the bill but you can do so much more on it too.
@@RGhandhelds I see. Thanks!
16:55 that's not a learning curve, that's bad design and we can totally complain
Just ordered.. Wondering if i can run Kali?
I think you can find community images floating around
Hello, this device make me impressed and excited.
I wondering this console is possible to install kali linux or not??????
Please
I am sure its possible
Why do you need Ubuntu? Debian has the same apt package manager basically.
Just for aesthetic reasons, I know they are very much the same :)
hi, whats the use of this device.?
Let us know once you have it
Dose anyone know if the USB-C port is OTG?
I believe it is.
If you stick a sim in it, is there functionality for sending and receiving text messages? Many thx
Not as default but there must be some software to slow that.
Looks good and price is fair. I'll give the dpad a pass but it needs proper shoulder buttons.
Its not really aimed as a gaming handheld its more a portable Linux computer,
@@RGhandhelds Yeah, but of course it's much cooler disguised as a Linux computer but it's really an emulation device.
Hi, Is there a way to access the RPI GPIO ports on uConsole, even just a few of them?! I can't find anywhere that info.
GPIO are there
@@RGhandhelds with extension cable?! Someone told me on another video that the ribbon cable from their site can deliver GPIO pins - probably through the connector to which the speaker board is connected, i.e. the 4G module.
I know that not many people will use GPIO pins, but without them, a good part of the point of having RPI inside is lost,
I think its via ext board.@@goranjosic
Does it have pins?
can it run Steam Link connected to a living room TV for game streaming?
Can't see why not
Whats the point of this device? i saw a lot of videos but i still dont get it. Like for gaming not good, for web browser etc, you can buy a smartphone.
Neither it's for field programers, Linux nerds,
@@RGhandhelds ooo okok, hmmmm. They should make a hand held
@@stormk-1130 the device is what you make it. The point mm is do what you want with it like I did :)
How long is the battery life compared to an average smartphone?
It's decent I was getting 6hrs screen on
@@RGhandhelds Nice. I would love to have something like this for coding. And the form factor is perfect for my use case. I really don't wanna spend much on a bulky laptop. If it had more battery life like 1 day or like 10 hours of continuous use I would definitely buy one.
Now that this came out would you recommend this or the DevTerm instead?
I don't have the dev terminal, but I would much prefer uconsole any day
what do you do with it tho. it looks neat.
I just reviewed it and have passed it onto someone who will have use for it.
is it possivle to run ps2 games here
No
can this be used as a joystick? like control a robot
Anything you want
@@RGhandhelds sounds good, thank u ☺️
Just wondering how is the screen quality. Do you see yourself using this screen for a few hours a day? I want to somewhat use this as a reader, eletronic diary and some other programming lingo. Thanks😅
Screen was very good and clear
Thanks for the quick reply
Places uconsole on stand: "You can type like this", but can you really?
The stand is for show that's all.
Unfortunately, the UConsole is not open source as advertised, it's not Open Hardware! There are no PCBs, you cannot edit anything there, feels bad. Not having those is a definitely a blocker for the targeted people: the people that want to tinker and create mods for it.
Updating/upgrading (sudo apt upgrade) a specific and special OS image is a bad idea. It's also a bad idea to make such a device unless you distribute the changes needed. I have a special GamePi20 image which will destroy the various functions in that setup by upgrading. (I tested it.) I have special use of such, though. It's literally my own image already.
Can it runs Kali Linux?
Can you use any CM4 module?
Yes
could not find "Contac Us" page for this manufacturer. no address, no e-mail.
You can find Alex email on there
How is battery life?
It's good with decent set of batteries
What games can it run?
Up to psp
How is the battery life?
Very good with a decent pair of batteries go for a quality brand.
@@RGhandhelds how many hours?
It's organizer
what is the general purpose of this device?
Linux portable
OMG sort your focus out dude
Resolution 720p. No thank you.
Resolution is 1280x720
Full-sized gaming laptops used to come with a screen of 1366*768. 1280*720 is absolutely sufficient for retro gaming and emulation.
yeah, who wouldn't wanna play gba games in 4k 5'' display, pwww
it's an HD screen the size of a pack of cigs and you're not satisfied, absolute snob
I think your connectivity issues may be attributed mostly, if not entirely, to the strange belief you seem to hold (VERY) strongly that the reliability, consistency, and bandwidth of this device - as it pertains to your household in particular - is somehow linked to certain unnamed parameters which exist somewhere in your home and which are being attributed to a tool which plumbers use to clear obstructions in a drainage pipe. How exactly a rooter would have any impact whatsoever on your connection speeds is beyond me. Is it a faith/religious type thing? Or have you modified the attachment of this rooter to amplify or direct your wifi signal in some way that is as of yet unexplained? I could see utilizing the snake portion of a rooter to make a rather efficient helical antenna - although I am certain more cost effective and efficient methods of accomplishing that same goal exist all around you...
Linux hardware makers have the worst design ever.
Where is the ethernet port? and wifi ant is exposed ,so ugly.
Port is blocked WiFi cable doesn’t bother me it’s a first design
Although there are still some issues, but it's my favor style device.
If uConsole has ethernet port,it will be a good project assistant for system shakedown testing and configration.such as onvif testing ,device remote config , system debuging ,etc. it's an absolute Productivity Tool
,it will instead of laptop. @@RGhandhelds
