Timezones and travel. I think a bunch of them had obligations that were really time consuming and they lost the cadence. PLP --> chemo, Locked In --> SF to LA bike trip, Spindatt --> the movie set he was working on. Viewership wasn't good either.
How about a video where-in you do a day trip around your city. Love to see where you get to ride, coffee spots, food stops whatever. If you have already made such a vlog maybe it's time for another?
Love my rock hopper! Steel frames are better than aluminum! You inspired me to build it back up from a rolling wreck! Still love riding it after all these years!
I just finished my vintage frame build: 1995 Gary Fisher (perfect blue teal paint) Absolute black oval chainring (42t) Race face cranks and bb Sram gx eagle Rd and chain Sunrace 11-50t cassette Deore hubs with rhino lite rims Rene herse rat trap pass tires (2.3'!) Jones double butted bars (with rise) Ergon grips and cork blend bar tape Avid v-brake set Brooks c-17 special saddle Thank you so much for the inspiration! Most comfortable bike I've owned. Also very fast and playful.
Nice! I stripped and powder coated my 1998 Gary Fisher. Alivio triple crank, Wolf Tooth Components 34T chainring, 11-40 Sunrace 9-speed cassette, Deore XT derailleur with the Wolf Road Link, Alivio shifter, new Avid V-brakes and levers, new wheels with Deore hubs, WTB seat and Bontrager H2 smooth tires. I added a Blackburn rear rack. It's actually a lot of fun. Years ago I had replaced the factory fork with a Rock Shox Dart model. The frame and fork were in great shape, but every component was worn out, so I decided to create an urban-commuter with a simple 1x drivetrain.
Wow! That's so cool. I love the geometry on my 95'. It has a rigid fork and the geometry and steel frame feels very comfy but also lively like a BMX. I actually have 3 of these builds, but the Gary Fisher is the main one. I have a trek that we turned into a 5 speed hub commuter with a Brooke's springed saddle. The other one is a Santa Fe and I have sparrow bars on it, and a Shimano 3*10 drive train , rear derailleur is deore. All of these bikes have deore hubs and I'm very impressed. They roll forever!
I prefer the 90s MTB frames because of the longer chain-stays and more distance between the seat tube and the rear tire. I also think that the curve(rake) in the 90s unicrown forks have better benefit in deflecting road shock than the modern strait forks. The other big benefit of the 90s steel bike frame is that it will out last the Redwood aluminum frame.
in this video the 90's bike had a shorter chain-stay than the modern, so not sure what you're getting that from. i doubt the curve does much for deflection, and instead is more the rake numbers allow for a plusher ride when having a ridged fork, not to mention the noddle-yness of the steel forks helps out
I ride an old carrera Fury, i love the frame geometry and the chainstays are cut away and welded near the seat tube from factory so you can fit a big FAT 2.5" tyre 🙏
Great comparison. What is old is new again. How would the two bikes compare on say, the Salt Marsh Trail rails to trails with 'bumpy washed out surface'?
the redwood is for me since im 193cm tall and finding an xl is hard but thats almost too small for me and an xxl is impossible since there were non made ( or i just havent found them yet
What is your opinion of dropping the suspension fork of a carbon carbon XC HT and putting a rigid carbon one on it and trading in a Gravel bike for full suspension so the XC bike would serve as a gravel/road bike and Full suspension would be the mtb
Comical truly. In 1992 my 173cm (5’8”) better half was “fitted” for a high end hybrid. The top tube was a truly comical 60cm. OMG. Love your work but how’s the kick flip going? 😉
And color. When I got all-black modern bike I though how cool is that. Now when I have blue retro MTB and white fixed gear I rarely ride that black bike anymore. I know color isn't deciding factor but who came up with idea of all-black bikes? So I vote for Hoppy in its crazy cool magenta nightshade color.
You know because of you i been trying to find a rock hopper and i really want the purple you jave but there hard to come by over where i live amd then rhext color i would like to get instead is the baby blue or kinda like mayne turqoise its hard to say the color but i cant really find either
Couldn't agree more to your summary but would like to add two things to the ride characteristics: The steel and rake of the Rockhopper gives a bit flex and more comfortable ride than the (supposedly) stiff aluminium frame. Secondly, out of your humbleness you say you are not a good enough rider to feel the difference between the two but quickly after you contradict yourself by saying they both have their advantages according to terrain. So there is a noticeable difference, after all! :) Anyway, good content like always!
This video made it click in my head I now have the want to sell my old road bike. I haven't really felt excited to ride my diverge e5, but I'm so excited to get my new carbon bike actually up and running with a new wheelset that I just want to sell my road bike to be able to get a nice wheelset for it I just needed something to excite me with more speed than my old bike Boom-bata-bang Although I do need to get some riding in on my fixie...
Like Greg & Gene said it's Alu, but Carbon MtB rigid fork are a tuff as any other, I'd just avoid carbon steerer tube if you like your teeth where they are now.
The most important number for me is the Redwood is $800+? My 1998 Trek cost me $40. 😁
The rockhopper is way more badass
Yeah - what are the odds people will be riding Redwoods in 2051?
@@dougfromsoanierana I would but I will be too damn old...
What ever happened to ACN? I enjoyed those gab sessions.
ive asked, on everyones channels. no response :(
Same, 3 guys who got on and had a laugh
I was wondering the same thing! Esp with Zac Gallardo
Eric, we demand answers!

I don’t think you once mentioned the difference in wheel size which affects all of the other aspects of geometry.

Phillip! I have a early 90s wahoo that I am stuck on. I would love you pick your brain.
Hey Philip, that's a very cool build you did there. Love Rene Hesrse Brooks and Ergon too. Enjoy!

@@mrskibum885 obviously this curve has a big influence on the deflection - this is the main reason for using this on bikes with a steel fork
Leading off with Suffer City, then nerding out on bike numbers; excellent way to spend a Sunday 👍🏻

I love hearing the differences in geometry. The different engineering and mindset behind the setups is super interesting!
you skating in the shed reminds of the bomb shelter scene in gleaming the cube.
Today I learned that trail is measured in MM. I never knew what the unit for a trail number was.
Is there a video you did on how to build the quarterpipe?
What's the weight difference between the 2?... Would that effect the flickability of the bike??
Great comparison. What is old is new again. How would the two bikes compare on say, the Salt Marsh Trail rails to trails with 'bumpy washed out surface'?
I suggest, do what I did. Build a longer steel fork for the classic frame. Works perfect :-)
What radius is that little quarter pipe?

The steel MTB is so much nicer as an urban 100% concrete and tarmac straight (narrow) bar streetfighter. 👍

Aluminium is not stiffer than steel, on the contrary, it is three times less rigid! Steel dampens vibrations more.

Rockhopper has the classic NORBA geometry for that stretched out heads down ass up elbows out position on the bike.🙂
What happens when you put a meaty 650b wheel set on the Redwood (Mike)?
Having watched the series over on Locked In Poseidon really should have named the bike Mike.
Completely random question, what size tunnels do you wear?
7/8
Is the Redwood a carbon fork? How durable are they on mtb trails?
.......... just say NO.
The Redwood comes with an aluminum fork
Like Greg & Gene said it's Alu, but Carbon MtB rigid fork are a tuff as any other, I'd just avoid carbon steerer tube if you like your teeth where they are now.
new intro!
The music!
Great video👍 miss ACN it’s was always good entertainment! Especially Eric’s bad internet connection 😂
You kinda skiped over the wheel size & slamability
I can clearly see the slacker head angle on the redwood, maybe you need some new lenses bro
Music 👍🏻
Yeah ……what’s up with ACN
so in conclusion... full circle back to the type of bikes we had in the 90's BUT with all the "problems" solved?
Aluminium.
rockhopper looks better
