I appreciate this video!!! I have been watching videos all day on how to dry sage and yours is the best!! I don't care of film quality. You are real and know what you are talking about. THANK YOU!!!
THANK YOU PRAIRIE EDGE! Whopila Tanka for doing these things there are Lakota Oyate all over and my family and I need sage to be clean an pray with especially around Inipi and Hanblechia. All this fear in these comments and anger and bad words toward these good efforts that benefit others and lift them up. We need to let others walk there own walk because its not for us to be any persons judge. Especially with things that belong to Unchi Maka. Look for good and it will grow around you put it in your heart and speak from that place..
How I was taught was to pick the tallest so the smaller ones can keep growing. We pick after the seeds drop because that's how they keep growing year round it doesn't matter if you pick by the root bc of the seeds. Everyone has different teachings.
Sorry, I didn't mean you guys. I was actually talking about the other people on ebay, ect. that are taking advantage of the local wild sage populations and are decimating them to the point of near extinction. They are "plant poachers" that don't care about the plant or the damage they are causing. You guys harvest with care and always leave some to continue the species. The way it should be done. Peace.
Hi Brieanna: We do this as well, some folks carefully gather the seeds and package them with their location so that the sage can be planted in other areas like gardens, or fields. We are glad that you were guided by your elders :)
When we purchase sage from our Lakota children, we do not believe they are trying to rape anything. They go out with their elders, they learn the proper way to gather and they benefit from the time spent with family and can purchase whatever they want with the money they have earned. One boy told us he was gathering for his mom so he could get a really nice birthday gift for her. We understand that there are folks out there doing the "wrong thing" but not these folks.
What's the difference between smudging sage and the kind you buy in stores to cook with or is there really no difference? I ask because I would like to try and grow my own smudging sage in my backyard in a pot
The cooking sage is a much lighter plant with a hint of scent. South Dakota sage is a hardier plant with a heavier scent, not quite as cloying as California High desert sage. Hope that helps.
Check with your local green house, if they do not carry the seeds they can order them for you. Give them the genus name listed on the web-site and that will narrow down their search. @@anakinskywalker6666
However, I also have been gifted from a trade of the sages. From prairie to mountain sage. What is the best way to store dried mountain sage. 2lbs of cuttings of tips were gifted. After awhile they have lost their richness of aromas when I stored it in a cedar box. Do you have other suggestions?
Hello and thanks for the note. You are entirely correct. The "Salvia" spp. are the ornamental and the culinary sages. The "Artemisia" spp. are the ones used across the continent as ceremonial plants. What these two species share is the presence of camphor / camphor-like compounds that give them their "sage-y" odor. But they are two differnt species - two different plant families. Thanks for the note - from michael.
You are welcome.I was just wondering why would you guys connect them under the same common name. Thanks for explaining that.Do you sell them as sage or as Artemisia (mugwort or wormwood)?Because if a person knows the difference between both plants they can get confused why the "sage" does not look exactly as one.I for once will recognise artemisias instantly.I have deep love for this plant ally.
ArtemisiaWormwood Hello - Thanks for the note in reply. We call this plant "sage" because that is the most identifiable term in English used by local Native American people. When we list it on our website, we also use the Latin name which is Artemisia ludoviciana. Interestingly, there are two forms of this particular species: one is more silvery and has more rounded and wider leaves, and the other has leaves that are thinner and sharper. The overall scent is the same, but some people prefer one over the other. In this part of the country, both of these plants are mostly called sage by everybody, and the common English name is Cudweed Sagewort. And you are in good company to have an abiding respect for this plant. The Mugworts and Wormwoods are different from this particular Artemisia. Thanks again for your kind words - from michael.
Thank you for your adding this new information. This particular species I have not seen here in UK or in my native country,so it is absolutely unknown to me as plants.I am more than happy to expand my knowledge about its common name and use locally. It is good that you list its Latin name.I never knew that there is Artemisia called sagewort. It is only a good thing that people around the world get to exchange information about medicinal and ceremonial plants. In this way we can make sure that this knowledge is passed down and kept safe not forgotten with our physical death.I am very grateful that you took the time to explain this for me.Blessed be !
An inch or two is all that is necessary to guarantee re-growth. The stubble will help to protect the ground below where the roots have already taken hold. Hope that helps :)
You should experiment a little, maybe start off with a small smudge stick to see if it can be wrapped with other herbs, etc..., be very careful when you burn it so you do not create too much smoke, that can hurt your lungs. Good luck and let us know how it turned out for you :)
Yes, there are hundreds of different genus all across our continents. Each plant has the some of the signature markers like the heavy scent of camphor, but they differ in their uses by indigenous people.
I have a suggestion to Expose the Luciferian. Recommend to find out exactly what kind of sage you have. Because not all sage plants are good for eating or burning/smudging. Some plants carry the name sage but do not have aroma properties that are safe for breathing purified air. I had to share some wisdom to couple who was burning ornamental silver sage. That carried the name but really had no relation to the sage family. It looks like sage but truly is something else. So before you harvest find out what you have. I have growing Dakota female prairie sage out in my fields. I use in medicine tea. I'm not familiar how to store mountain sage. I thought it be the same. It's not, it loses its aromas
I have a very different species of prairie white sage. However, I would wish you when making a video. Bring the stalk up close so viewers can see the type of leaf, stem and if possible seeds you are harvesting. Because you say prairie sage from wherever you maybe it's different than mine from northern woods central that grow in much colder environment.
I'm not sure? For thousands of years the Plains Indians have been offering and gathering, I imagine that's why the plants still exist as well as the Plains Indians. Hope that helps.
the RIGHT way is to acknowledge the Nation whose territory you are on, to request from them their permission to harvest and not sell sacred medicine in the first place. so clueless.
I believe this is a video that shouldn't be posted. We learn these teachings from Elders, not TH-cam videos. Some things should not be sold, like sweet grass or sage. This is exactly why people exploit resources
