    Wayne, you hit a home run with this video. It really helped understand the fundamentals of the video process. I will come back to this video from time to time to reenforce my understanding. Keep up the GREAT WORK.

      Hi Cal, happy you liked it. Wanted to keep it simple with examples, plus additional high quality footage to show what you can expect when you go up higher in quality.

      Due to the configuration and age of my computer, I cannot use the higher end processes. But am happy to use my current configuration to get a thorough understanding of the video process.

      @@caljackson3940 The higher level codecs will require more power, you may want to stick with 1080 8 bit (h.264) .MP4, instead of using h.265. H.265 uses higher level compression that maintains image quality but, you’ll need a decent machine to decode. You’ll notice the camera mentions this when you choose that level of codec. Not sure if you are an Apple guy but, their M1 line of machines came with dedicated video encoders/decoders, which can handle up to 8K files, the higher up the line you go the better they are. I’m still seeing some M1 machines available on Amazon and BH Photo, probably other places have them as well, no need for the M2 or M3 versions. If you look back in my channel, I was using a M1 Air to edit 4K videos and post to my channel back in 2021, before upgrading to the M1 Max 16”.

    That was great Wayne, I like your relaxed style.
    I am sort of new to serious video recording.
    I want to do a short music video outside with my g/f singing karaoke style
    So an outside version of this would be great.
    I just want medium quality suitable for TH-cam upload.

      Wow, that sounds like me when I first started shooting videos and did 4K, my Mac Pro was 10 years old at that time, a 20 minute car review video, took 24 hours to render. Built an AMD around the Radeon VII GPU, with the Threadripper 2950 CPU, renders took about the same length of the videos, provided there wasn’t too much extras done. The MacBook Air trounced it for render time and then my 16” MacBook Pro, 24 Core GPU M1 Max system just beat everything and became my main machine. It’s been so great, I don’t feel the need to upgrade.

    Wayne, I back. I have a new computer that can handle the more sophisticated video processes. My question this time is what are your suggestions for video processing software?

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@caljackson3940 Congrats! There are quite a few on the market but, I use Davinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design. Nikon recommend their software to process their RAW video files, they have a free version that does a good job but limits you to edit HD (1080) files, the Studio version is $299. I also tried Apple’s Final Cut (Mac only), but preferred Resolve.

    thx Wayne. Im getting way ahead of myself here based on my video shooting experience but im lost when it comes to shooting RAW video, post editing (where and how) and whether even I should be considering this stuff when Im basically a nature and bird photographer with my Z8 with emphasis on stills

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sunking9050 Your welcome! RAW is something most people won’t need to shoot in. I’ve tested it and it does have its use case but, you can edit the 10bit files just fine. With Z8, the 8K SDR mode produces really high quality images however, the file size will be large, going to RAW will make it even bigger.
      For editor, I use Davinci Resolve, which Nikon recommends to edit their RAW files. It’s quite full features and it was my choice years ago when I first started my foray into video editing. You can give RAW a try for a minute of footage to see if it works for you. I’m working on a RAW editing video but, there are others on YT already which you can check out.

    Hi Wayne, hope you are doing well, I have been trying to do video with my Nikons lol, but there is one thing I don't understand and wanted to see if you could please help. I have mines in AF-F in video mode and my question is, do I have to leave the AF-ON button pressed at all times or does it focus and track the eyes/head of the subject by itself without me having to leave the AF-ON button pressed at all times. I'm loset, lol...I press that button to focus as UI do when I take photos but I lose focus so I have tried leaving the AF-ON button pressed but I still lose the subject, I'm not super sure what I am doing wrong lol.... If you could please help, I would really appreciate it, thank you.

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Fel, AF-F means the camera is focusing all the time, if the subject is people, it will put a box on the eyes it detects, if you want to target a particular person, you will have to chose that individual with the arrow buttons. If you want to track 1 person, select on the screen (if touch AF is on) and it will stay on them unless you cancel it. You don’t need to press the AF-On button when recording video. You may also want to change the video AF and tracking speed to something faster, it’s normally set to a slow mode for smooth transitions between subjects but, we tend to want it to work like in photo mode and snap focus to our subjects. I think that might be what you are experiencing. Let me know if that helps.

      @@waynerm002 Hi Wayne, wow, thank you sir so much, I really appreciate it! Yes, perhaps I have been sabotaging myself by keeping pressing the AF-ON button trying to keep focus lol, I will follow your advises here and get back to you (if I remember lol) to let you know how it went. Thank you sir, and have a great week. Cheers!

      @@felm.974 Doing the old "back button focus" thing isn't needed for video, just press record and let the camera handle things, which is actually quite nice and much better doing manual focus. Although, the professional folks still love doing manual focus but with DJI now making this Lidar system for focusing, that is slowing changing.
      If you recall in my videos with products, I hold in the item in front of my face to block the eyes to get it to focus on the item that is close to the center. If you want to just take videos of an area and not focus on a particular subject, just turn of subject detection and the camera will change settings to keep the entire area in focus, depending on the time of day, that may be f5 and up in bright light and down to maximum aperture to keep things properly exposed. Program mode is a good place to start, the results are pretty great. Manual is for later once you have a better understanding of things. Practice, practice, practice. LOL!

      @felm.974 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@waynerm002 Wow, thank you so much, I really appreciate it, yeah, manual mode sounds even more scary, like you said, I'll leave that for later and practice with AF-F first lol and indeed, I definitely should get a gimbal too at some point soon lol... I didn't want to get into video bc it is a different "animal" and it can get expensive but these days, you kind of need to do it or you might be left behind lol.. Thank you again, keep up the great work as always.
